Sony's Jim Ryan : ‘Giving away stuff on day one… it’s kind of odd.’

Interesting. That says that everything the PS4 is getting is actually a timed exclusive. Sweet!

Wasn't that obvious from day one? It's an Activision game after all and they've allegedly sunk close to half a billion dollars into its development. Nothing to do with the game will be exclusive for more than a month or two.

This interview was good. The only part that annoyed me mostly was the part about the controller. It's not fair for people who don't like the Xbox controller to see Sony get up and so the samething.

Xbox may be a gold standard for what IT is used for in terms of specific game genres, but it's not the gold standard of all controllers. I love the Sony layout and there's always third party alternates to it. Sony doesn't have to lose their identity just to be like MS. Deal with it.

According to his comment its only a timed exclusive. So it'll be coming to the XOne eventually and even the WiiU...

:(
Yeah I think no one has enough money to keep Activision stuff permanently exclusive. Otherwise Microsoft would just lock up all the CoD DLC forever.

Well it discourages people from cancelling that day 1 preorder for a console that might launch earlier.

Why is that bad?

I hate when content is available to more people, especially outside the console of my choice

:(
I was frowning at my WiiU comment. I apologize for not making it clear. I'll be getting Destiny on the XOne (controller preference) so Sony's "exclusive content" coming to the XOne makes me happy!

It caught me as a surprise to see him mention it was timed exclusive. I don't think anyone ever says it is. I'm more inclined to believe Sony's version of exclusive than Microsoft's.

Compare this to the interview with Microsoft's Phil Harrison and you can see why Sony is in the lead right now.

Phil Harrison most of the time seems like a down to earth chap, but obviously what's happened here is his PR head prodder has told him to speak in robotic-corporate mode and Jim Ryan's has told him to be more approachable and laid back.

Difference in PR can go a long way.

What he is saying is right. I would expect the Xbox One to have still sold out despite E3 and all with all the policy reversals.

I count this as a gift for those who stayed loyal and invested in an MS pre-order when all the shit was kicking off.

It's a nice touch. Fifa is quite popular amongst old and young and it has good online services (my preference is actually PES). But if you were selling out your pre orders anyway, it's not something you'd just do. The purpose was more than likely twofold.

I guess he forgot the times when consoles came with games.

OH SHIT, DOESN'T THE PS3...

lol, I kid, I kid. But Drive Club is a brand new game they are giving away with Plus.

Plus isn't free, and it also isn't a console. That's another product/ service. It's also not the full game.

And neither are the games in pack ins, you get the game at a discounted price but not free.

Driveclub doesn't count. He is talking about day one, not first month or first year. And he is right. If you have all your day one consoles already sold (pre-orders), why would you add more things to them when you can't possibly sell more?

Ah, so they ARE free games now and not rentals! I think I'm getting the hang of this now.

From a perspective of somebody who wants to continue PS+ subscription indefinitely (now also because of the "multiplayer tax"), those games are virtually free. But technically of course, they aren't.

He's basically saying that MS is only doing it because pre-orders are slow, that's what he's implying with "odd". They are happy with their pre-orders so obviously there's no need to give stuff away to get people on board.

Nothing! I said nothing!
I think the problem here is, it was a bit of a naff question.

Sony have their strategy and they have been clear for months on what that is. They aren't going to deviate.

I think it's even fishier that Drive Club will be free day one. Can't they even wait for it to bomba? I don't care if it's a console or a service, it's still a brand new game. Of course, you could also say that all these "free games" are just being discounted. It's not like you're getting the games without paying anything.

The main difference is really that you don't have to preorder to get the complimentary stuff you get on PS4 with Plus. They're not making you commit now if you want the stuff. You can wait and see how the two systems compare, how multiformat games differ on each, which platform your friends go for, or how the launch lineups review.

The Plus games aren't being used to encourage the consumer to rush their decision, basically.

In a way though, it must be perilous working at MS's in their gaming division right now.

You talk shop and set up the console, then get farmed out to Zynga (Don Mattrick).
Open your mouth on twitter, get fired (Adam Orth).
Talk shop trying to promote bad policy by saying "Flip a switch", then watch reversal and look like a Major Twat (Larry Hryb)

After everything thats happened, I reckon half of MS's staff are cowering under desks, the other half are lined up outside the toilet with a sewage plant in their underwear

A few possible reasons.

1. In light of the online paywall, they want to prove that they are still going to deliver a good IGC library, so they need to sacrifice a AAA first party title to IGC.

2. Gran Turismo. Releasing a racing game within a few weeks of Gran Turismo is akin to throwing pigs to the slaughterhouse. Forza will likely underperform for similar reasons. One does not simply race with Gran Turismo.

I don't know, I tend to go with the second theory, but then they're just assuming the game will be a flop. I still think they should allow it the dignity of bombaing by itself.

GC: I’m not suggesting you’ve done anything wrong. But they have caught up, it must seem that way to you.

JR: They’ve clearly, and I don’t want to impute too much to anybody else’s behaviour – it’s improper – but they obviously concluded that they had made some decisions that they needed to change and they did that. I think that it has resulted in there continuing to be some confusion round exactly what they stand for now. And I think there continues to be no ambiguity about what we stand for.

This is exactly right.

Full interview in the link above. It's quite lengthy, and it's classic Jim Ryan all the way through, with some mild shots fired every now and then.

I guess giving away Spiderman UMD for free with every PSP was odd as wel thenl.

And so was James Bond Casino Royale bluray with every PS3. :p

its just marketing thing, you people really think microsoft did that in good gesture?

all desperation bro.

You're paying the console price. When the "promotion" ends. You'll be paying the same price. So they're free.

Packins increase the price. PS3 = $399, PS3+GAME = $420, not free, discounted.

Those are intended to say "hey this new gaming device also plays movies on new media that Sony has invested shot loads of money into" rather than being an actual pack in. Plus CR wasn't in the box...

heh, I remember the night the PS3 came out and in Oxford street London Phil Harrison gave everyone who preordered a free 46inch bravia and a taxi home.

...but yeah, giving shit away for free. Bad.

This. At least some execs know how to conduct business. Talking shit about your competition is so 5-year-oldish.

They're not giving away the full version of Drive Club.
