About The Game

Space Rangers HD: A War Apart remasters and expands the world of the cult classic Space Rangers 2. The game is developed by the SNK-Games team in close cooperation with fans of the series.

The biggest of the improved features is a new scenario dedicated to the pirates threatening the galaxy. While the Coalition spends all of its resources to fight the Dominators (sentient machines who seek to eradicate all life), the pirates have united under the banner of a mysterious leader. Under this new master they have begun their own guerilla war to seize power in the weakened Galaxy. Players can now choose with whom to deal, the Dominators or the pirates, or both at the same time. If you choose the latter path, you will receive new story and side quests, new goals and promotions. After winning one of the wars, you can either finish the game or continue playing to win another.

Players begin their pirate career as the lowest of the low, and will make their way to the top of the pirate hierarchy, completing story missions and learning new information about the organization and its unknown leaderwhose actions threaten the very existence of the Coalition of sentient species. All player actions affect what kind of place the Galaxy will be at the end, with the victorious Coalition that managed to overcome its enemies or with a collapsed alliance from both external Dominator and internal pirate pressures.

The game has received a major technical overhaul in addition to the addition of new content. All of the main menu, loading screens, planet and space station vistas were reworked. Now you can choose a display resolution of up to 1920×1200 and planetary battles employ modern render technologies.

FAQ
Q: What is this game about?
A: Well, in short this is a space simulation where you take a role as "space rangers", special, freelancing pilot that recruited by the interplanetary government in order to dealt with Dominators threat. The game itself have diverse gameplay element. Even Steam list it up as Adventure, Action, RPG, Strategy, and Simulation. Watching some let's play video (if there is any) might give you a better picture of the game.

Q: Why should I buy this game?
A: First, this game have crazy replayability. The galaxy map will be randomized each time you started a new game. You could take different approach and gameplay style to the the game. Either be a hero that libreated dozens of systems from Domnators, or become a crazed rampaging pirate. Not only that, you also can modify the difficulty of the game certain part, like for example you could make the Dominators easier to defeat, but have the quest give less reward and slow research progress/ No playthrough will be exactly the same with such flexibility!

Second, the quest flavor here is really charming and funny. Maybe those planetary governor just order to kill, or escort a ship, or just guard a system from pirate raid. But those ship you need to protect carried frozen Elvis Presley, or that ship you need to destroy is using ancient Chinese engine that polute the galaxy space. Most of all though, there is text based quest that make most part of the game. The variety of it is astounding. You can be a ski resort tycoon, go for a planetary governor election, or participate in Elus competition, a crazy game that will wear out your logical ability in no time. If you like space simulation game with crazy, imaginative, humorous flavor text, this game is a steal.

Q: I still don't get a shit from your explanation!
A: Well, thankfully TucoBenedictoPacifico, our fellow Gaffer made a better explanation:

Well, it's more like "Pirates!" in space.
Plus EVE Online spaceship fitting.
Plus text based adventures as side quests.
Plus occasional RTS sections.

But with more story and RPG in it.
And the universe is alive and goes on by itself regardless of the player input.

In short, it's freaking massive and awesome.

Q: Still not convinced. Convince me GAF.
A: Just listen to this OST
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwrMlv8IEvE

Q: Is the game difficult?
A: The game have quite steep learning curves, yes. But you can modify the difficulty to your liking.

Q: Is there any multiplayer?
A: No, but you can upload your score to the official website.

Q: I'm a returning player and loving Space Rangers 2: Reboot. Is this release worth the buy
A: Oh yes, not only just this released carry the improvement from Reboot, it also packed with new content such as music, quest, and storyline. You wouldn't be dissapointed, ranger!

Q: Will be there any physical release?
A: Sadly no, except for some European country.

Q: Is this going to be released on GOG? Steam sucks!
A: Again, no. The Publisher have stated that they are only interested releasing this game worldwide only on Steam, and nowhere else.

Q: I never see this game on Steam front page releases, why?
A: Because this is the greatest game that nobody played.

I doubt it this official thread will have more than 3 pages.

I wonder what kind of crazyness they can offer in the new text based quests. I hope it doesn't luck dependent like that shitty fishing competition :/

Another thrilling response from GAF.

For all the teary-eyed joy elicited from the Skyrims ands the Fallouts, you'd think one of gaming's most impressive living universe offerings would have that same dopamine teat leaking the good stuff in a preemptive fervour.

Take a chance, people.

Man I forgot this was coming out so soon!

I have a legit 300 hours poured into Space Rangers 2: Reboot. And now I just bought this one, probably to put another 100 or so hours into the new content.

I poured nearly 300 hour on the original, 100 hours on reboot. I think the HD content would enough to keep me entertained for another 100 hours at the very least.

Did they tweak SR2:Reboot's RTS combat difficulty? It's a lot harder than I remember compared to the original SR2.

I'll probably pick up A War Apart if there's enough new content...

There are new levels for the Planetary Battles, probably those new maps have more difficulty than the one introduced in Reboot.
Well, they give us brand new storyline, not counting new text based quests, more than enough for me.

I am tempted to pick this up. It looks and sounds interesting, but I dunno 20 bucks is more then I usually spend on games I am not sure about. Looks like I have a few days to decided if I should take the jump.

Picking this up when I get some money to spend for next month. I have been trying out the original Space Rangers 2 on occasions but haven't spent some real time with it, might as well give it a proper chance now with the HD version.

Never played these. Should I jump in blind with this one?
At that price point? Yes.
I'm not too excited to buy this update because i already played the basic game for hundreds of hours, but let's be clear here: we aren't talking about some "decent, little, weird game", this is a criminally overlooked massive masterpiece.

Well based on your word I bought it Tuco. It better live up to your hype or I will be giving you dirty looks for a while.

Here, just to point that I'm the lone nutjob here, but general consensus is on my side:

User scores are particularly telling.

Pretty impressive user scores, now I am even more interested. Game just finished downloading and I will probably be playing it over the weekend now. We shall see how it goes. If I end up hating it you at least won't be the only person to get dirty looks from me.

Hope it does well and we end up with Space Rangers 3.

You skipped reboot then? Why not jump in this time?

Nah, I played that, too. I said "basic game" just as a simplification.
And that's pretty much the issue for me: I'm not too excited to buy what's essentially the same game for the third time.

Well, I played the hell out of Reboot too, and I still have massive backlogs of game behind me but the new text based quests and pirate storyline intrigued me. I'll probably posted the impression later whether or not the game will be refreshing enough for those who have played the basic game like us/

Alright guys I bought it. Gonna play it after my class tomorrow. It's pretty late/early over here.
Tuco I don't have you on Steam though

Knowing nothing and just based on the Steam screenshots (which tell almost nothing actually), this seems like a mixture of Imperium Galactica 2 and Escape Velocity. Am I close?

Downloading... Never played but my personal all-stars are all recommending it here. Plus, the trailer with the arcade spacefight, RTS combat and text based quests gave me the final push.

The achievement is quite hilarious I said.
"I don't Have Time For This: Complete the Game Without Taking Any Mission"
Impossible. This is impossible.

Shengar

Member
Well, maybe not impossible, but it must be dauntingly hard to achieve.

What?

The achievement itself is very entertaining to read. Just make sure you don't actively try to accomplish them though.

Obviously he meant the game.

One of the achievement order you to defeat Blazer in 1-on-1 fight. Just him, no Keller or Terron. Is he really THAT bad?

Gonna play this whenever my 3DS on charge. But I'll probably hardly care about my 3DS once I jumped in.

Good to know that The Long Way Ballad still have its charm :)
Another Pylon recommendation labouring over one page. Pull it together people!
Come on GAF! Are 3 pages too much to ask?

I had initially some money set aside for The Stanley Parable, thank you for making me realise that my priorities were misplaced.

I've had to make that sacrifice too...
I traded in some games for Steam credit and got both -.- I'm so weak

It is an incredibly busy month (Deadly Premonition, 140, Deus Ex: HR - DC, Arkham Origins, Escape Goat and many more). I hope that November will give my wallet a rest.

Man I hear you. I want DP and 140 - but November for me is my first ever launch console (PS4) - no rest for the wicked :(

Oh and X Rebirth!

Did they tweak SR2:Reboot's RTS combat difficulty? It's a lot harder than I remember compared to the original SR2.

I'll probably pick up A War Apart if there's enough new content...

I didn't have a computer capable of the RTS segments the first time I played the original, but I remember Reboot's RTS combat being really tough. More tedious than anything, eventually I just stopped doing RTS missions because they would take more than 45 minutes when I was just hoping for a 15 minute RTS break.

If they made it easier (or let you tweak difficulty without reducing quest rewards, ideally) I'd do the RTS missions again.

I've picked up A War Apart already - I paid $20 for SR2, then $20 for Reboot. $20 for this means I've spent about standard game retail price for a game that's a lot better than most of what's on the market. I don't feel too bad about that.
