Finally gotten into this show, watched the first season and completely loved the finale. Is there really only 6 episodes of Gods of the Arena? Or only 6 that have aired? I need more of this show.
only six episode. then again this is Spartacus. where 1 episode is rich with content

Just finished rewatching the first series after watching GOTA. Those last few episodes are seriously so fucking good. SO FUCKING GOOD.

Just watched the finale

Gannicus is probably my favorite character, I liked him from the beginning it's great how he got freedom. I can't wait to see how he is introduced in S2 and what he thinks of all the changes since S1. Hell I can't wait for S2 as it will be a completely different show about the slave rebellion, no more gladiators, Lucretia's revenge on Illithia and Cixus, the characters of Crixus and Doctore after they betrayed their house.

...but Batiatus will be sorely missed.

Holy crap, I had totally forgot about this!?! I watched the first season and I like it a lot! I need to find the time to watch this.

So did they start filming Season 2 yet? I heard they were suppose to start in April. Interested in seeing how the new Spartacus looks in costume.

The show that once existed is indisputably destroyed. The new show might be good in its own unique way, but it's not the same show. Recasting such a pivotal role as Spartacus essentially demands you refilm the entire first season - there is entire established chemistry and relationships that are going to ring comically false with anyone else but Andy there.

Not saying the show isn't salvageable for others, but I have no interest in watching a new Spartacus without Andy and these other actors who left for story/other business reasons.

And I'm saying that's likely one big reason there is less interest in the Spartacus topic. I was a huge fan of the first season and that's why I haven't been in this one. I suspect the same might be true for some others as well.

I disagree, as much as I wish Andy well I dont think he made season 1, the writing did. Andy was just a familiar face I was embroiled in the fantastic plot progression. I love the pace of the show and the fact that each episode contains SO much, I love how the show is character motive focused and so doesnt have to rely on cliffhangers. I loved the prequel despite Spartacus not being present.

That said, the shows real flavour came from the Gladiator/ Ludus setting, I am not convinced the show will be as good in the open world. Even if Season 2 is fantastic I sure will miss the whole gladiator thing.

Sorry imma go back to reading the rest of the thread now, I know im lttp and im quoting a fairly old post, but I just had to say the magic of this show comes from the writers, not just Andy.

So I'm bored and pining for some Spartacus news about season 2, so figured I'd try to spur some discussion. Anybody interested in discussing possible casting choices for some of the major characters that are likely going to be introduced in season 2 or season 3?

There are 4 important historical characters that I can think of for sure to be introduced and play big parts in the series.

Villains

Marcus Licinius Crassus - One of the most powerful men in Rome and richest men in history. He eventually becomes the Consul to the army assembled to defeat Spartacus.

Lucius Gellius Publicola - One of two Consul Generals who is directed to deal with the slave rebellion later on in the war. A famous battle in the Servile War centers around him.

Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus - The other Consul General. Like Lucius, he is also involved in one of the major battles of the 3rd Servile War.

Heroes

Castus - Along with Crixus, Oenomaus, and Gannicus, he becomes one of Spartacus' Generals. Not much is known about him historically afaik, so they have alot of room to build this dude up.

I'm undecided about the last three, but I absolutely would love to see James Purefoy cast as Marcus Licinius Crassus. For one, he is the absolute perfect age, and two, as most of us have seen on Rome, this dude can carry an entire show by himself. He would make Crassus as epic a villain as John Hannah did for Baiatus. Especially when you factor in some of the things this guy was known for and the brutality he showed to his own troops.

Anyway, any other suggestions, especially for the other characters?

What about Ilythia's husband.
Crassus was definitely hinted at in the first season when Ilythia killed his cousin.

Perfect casting right there and it'd certainly fill the hole that's undoubtedly going to be left by John Hannah's absence.

Glaber is already confirmed to be coming back and will play a big part in future seasons. But in addition to him, they are going to need to introduce alot more big time historical characters. Mainly the ones that I mentioned, but there are some others also that may or may not be introduced in various degrees. Pompey comes to mind.

Just finished Gods of the Arena. The first four episodes were pretty weak. 80% sex, 15% plot, 5% fighting. The last two episodes (especially episode 5) were good, though!

I have a question.
Is Lucretia really coming back?
If so I think that is a huge cop out and I'm disappointed they chose to do so.

Yes, and i dont think its a cop out. It wasnt clear either way about his/her fate.

Wasn't his throat slit? I think both of them staying dead would be a much more fitting end. Titus cursed them and they met their fate.

No she was stabbed in the womb/guts. Batiatus had his throat cut.

I know that. That is why I said his and not her. He was saying both their fates were unknown, which is what I responded to.

Partially agree,
I feel like she will come back even though realistically she probably would've bled out and died. I mean she could survive but given the situation and time period death seems more realistic.
Oh well I'm sure the next season will be great regardless of what happens.

On an unrelated note, my friend from West Point said that people use this show as porn there since pornographic sites and content are prohibited but television is allowed at times. I found this amusing.

I only said his/her because i didnt feel like spoiler tagging who you were talking about, i was being lazy.

Just finished this series up to date (thanks, Netflix). Started off fucking atrocious. Glad I stuck with it.

1.) I honestly can't believe how shockingly bad the scene transition graphics were. It almost ensured I didn't make it past episode 2. It was borderline unprofessional.

2.) The blood was often unnecessarily gratuitous. Sometimes it was okay. Sometimes it reminded me of something designed for teenage boys.

that said,

3.) I was happy to find that #1 and #2 found a more refined touch as the series progressed.

4.) The principle characters were damn interesting.

5.) The ending to season 1 was the stuff of legend. I have rarely seen a better ending to a season. The show touched greatness.

6.) The prequel was cool. The main dude was pretty as hell with a perfect smile. I tip my hat to his mother and father.

Unfortunate to hear about Andy Whitfield's health situation. Fortunately, Spartacus was rarely a character with personality. I'm sure his replacement will be more than adequate...thought it will take some getting used to. Props to Starz for creating the prequel just to see if Andy could regain his health. I hope he gets well soon.
