man nothing in here about Kylo's Shuttle eh?

The potential shenanigans with Dormitz and some ships with Hyperwave Comms are interesting to me. And Hyperwave Comms in general could be pretty good. I am pretty underwhelmed with the shuttle overall though. I'm still getting one, for reasons other than "I'll buy at least one of everything:" A) It looks cool, B) It comes with two Snapshots.
I was really hyped for it though but at the moment I am more hyped for some potential lists I am building for after I buy a second cheap Lambda from a guy next weekend than I am for the Upsilon.

Here's a link to the Upsilon preview article: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/10/24/fanatical-devotion/

It underwhelms me, too. It's designed to be a support ship, but it's super expensive for being a support ship. More than 40 points after slapping a few upgrades on there is too much for a ship that won't be your main offensive weapon.

I've argued before that other ships designed to be supports — the Lambda Shuttle and the HWK-290 — were too expensive to be used as such, and those things start at 16 and 21 points respectively, paltry amounts compared to the Upsilon. The Upsilon is outrageous.

Sure, the Upsilon has 4 attack and 12 total hit points, but I'll bet it can't turn around and it maneuvers like a dog. It has no turret. It won't be an offensive force in this game, and you can't afford to spend more than a third of the points in your list on something that won't do much killing. Unfortunately, in this game, the support that support ships give isn't good enough to offset not running another attack ship or two.

Really the only exception to this has been Palpmobiles, and that's because Palpatine is just that good. And even then, it didn't really take over the metagame or anything. Other support uses, like running Vader on a Decimator or using Kyle Katarn to up someone's PS to 12, are only effective because the ships they're on have turrets, making them an offensive threat on their own merit and not only a support ship.

For X-Wing to have true support ships, they'd have to cost about 10 points, IMO. And when you do that, you can't design the ship to be overwhelming when spammed, so a 10-point HWK with its weaksauce 1 attack would work, but an Upsilon with 12 hit points and 4 attack wouldn't. The focus of a support ship should be support abilities, not giving good stats to the support ship, but FFG seems to try designing ships to do both — and then it does neither well.

I think the dial will determine a lot. 4 red die on a support ship is fun

What is that mysterious third action on the upsilons bar? Its got a focus, target lock and three pointy arrows.

Coordinate, an action that previously was only available to huge ships (capital ships). It lets a friendly ship at range 1 to 2 perform a free action. You basically give your action to a nearby ship, kinda like Airen Cracken, the Z-95 pilot. I actually really like that they gave this to a support ship in the dogfighting game outside of epic.

Had a chance to mull over the Upsilon and I'm not massively impressed with it too. The dial will certainly perhaps change my mind but at the moment it just looks a little stuck between being too expensive for a support but not maneuverable enough for a heavy damage dealer. Although I like Hux crew, he has potential to be real useful in other lists.

Ahh cool, cheers. I know very little about the big ships so whenever I find myself in 200 point games and someone has one it endlessly does a whole bunch if stuff that catch me off guard.

Sorry, that's usually me! I've been slacking!

And yeah, it's gonna take up a ton of room in my tackle box, haha

Just treated myself to the Shadowcaster to add to my Scum faction. Having a game tomorrow where I will break it out and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the ship and had any build advice.

A new preview would be nice (even if it is for a ship I will never fly... Man, I really need to fly a Scum list at least once). I'm waiting on HotR, which should be here at the end of the week. I didn't know if I was gonna buy it anytime soon but Amazon finally put it up on the site on Friday I think, so I ordered one.

Pretty sure these new waves of large ships is going to break my storage solution. Not sure what I should do...other than make portions of my box have modular/swappable areas and just keep some of the larger ships out. I really think adding a fourth double sided tackle box would just be a bit much, and I really like having 1 box for each faction.

So I'm guessing Wave 10 should drop before Rogue One right? End of Nov maybe?

Fantasy Flight seems to be shooting for that, especially after adding a pair of Rogue One ships to the wave. Their normal track record would have put this wave releasing in February based on when it was announced and when it changed to "printing now" on the upcoming page, though, so I wonder if the stock will actually be really low initially and won't catch up until a month or two into the new year.

Flew this at a 16 man tourney last Sunday. Came 9th

99 points

Pilots
------

Asajj Ventress (49)
Lancer-class Pursuit Craft (37), Veteran Instincts (1), K4 Security Droid (3), Glitterstim (2), Black Market Slicer Tools (1), Shadow Caster (3), Gyroscopic Targeting (2)

Syndicate Thug (25) x 2
Y-Wing (18), Twin Laser Turret (6), Unhinged Astromech (1), BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

I really liked the list, the only thing I'll change is I'm going to drop the title on the Y-Wings to open them up a little. I wanted to maximise damage but it seldom paid off.

I'm gonna try and get time this week to take photos of all my painted ships.

I faced a very similar list (he used PTL and Latts instead VI and K4, and had no titles on the Ys) on a tournament a few weeks ago, using the Norra-Braylen-Biggs list. I found it a pretty tough list to crack, PTL-Latts Asajj is an asshole.

I wanted to go for Asajj first, but he didn't let me do that and I had to take down both Y-wings first. It ended on a 1v1 between Asajj and Norra, but the Shadowcaster Tractor Beam + extra stress destroyed any option I had to win. Assaj survived with 4 or 5 hit points left.

He finished 4th if I remember correctly, of ~36 players.

People said TLThugs would come back. I never faced TLTs when they were a "problem" (come to think of it, I don't think I've faced a TLT ever) but it is nice to see them come back if only because it means new (old) lists.

There are many pretty nice ships up there. Love that Slave 1 Jumpmaster. And the Firespray fanboy inside me really likes what you have done there, especially the glazed one. I actually wanted to do something like that for my third FS before deciding to go the Jango route.

Here, here, listen to this man. Words of reason.

Next ships I will paint are probably a cloaking TIE Phantom and a TIE Fighter from certain ship pack I bought that had this "thing" on the wings:

Just checked eBay to see if any official Weapon Disabled tokens from Worlds had been listed. I know they are brand new and at their highest demand right now, so the price might be higher than what the average might wind up being, but three of them for $200 BIN? Another three that started at $50 with current bids?
Yeah, guess I'm never gonna get official FFG acrylic Weapon Disabled tokens. And just when I was ready to fly K-Wings too.

Disappointing finals, though I can understand how playing for so long in one day leads to making mistakes like that.

Congrats to our new World Champion!

I'm pleasantly surprised by Heaver failing to repeat again as world champion. He still did really well, making Top 16, but I just don't think it's good for the game to be won by the same person each year. It was even won by a non-American, a Belgian! So good for him. Hope he designs a good card.

My Shadow Caster arrived today, so I am officially caught up and back on track with regards to my "Buy at least one of everything" plan. I got caught up right before Wave 9 came out, but now I'm back. I also received a really nice dice tray that I ordered, with a TIE Fighter Squadron patch in the middle of the felt. I didn't NEED a dice tray but I had been wanting one for a while as just another cool piece of swag to have with my game. If only there were nice Star Wars dice cups out there (I am aware of some sellers on etsy who make some Star Wars leather dice cups, but they are a bit pricey and don't look like what I would want).

Now if only I could play a game of X-Wing. Saturday marked one month since my last match. That was at an OP, right after the hurricane. I got horribly sick for a couple weeks and it kicked in the morning after the OP, so I was out of commission for a while. I got a hold of someone last week who said they would be free all day yesterday but they never responded to my messages yesterday asking if we were still good to play and what time I should head over. At least there is an OP this weekend, but I don't know what turnout will be like since the Raleigh Regionals start the same day. I really really REALLY wanted to go to Raleigh for the regionals but my wife is due to give birth anytime now. I could easily get home quickly from the OP in Columbia if I needed to (turn an hour drive into 40 mins or less) but Raleigh is 3.5 to 4hrs away depending on traffic and it is a two day regional; not the best place to be if my wife goes into labor.

I feel kinda bad. I just had a game with a friend who had recently brought the Heroes of the Resistance pack and so very excitedly brought out new Han and new Poe, full decked out. And I in my utter (wasn't really aware of it at the time) cruelty decided to roll in with my Asajj Shadow Caster with two twin laser turreted Y-Wings. Han decided to start right next to my side of the board and my ships just turned on him and melted him in about three turns while Poe sped across the field to try to join the battle. And after Han fell I just turned on Poe and took his ship apart. At the end of the fight both Asajj and one of the Ys had no shields but other then that undamaged. Twin lasers aren't really in the meta at the moment (I presume due to all the Imperial aces) but this game really hit it home how fierce they can still be if you make like one mistake flying against them.

Edit: And while I am here I need to thank Tensketch. I took your advice and was flying K4 Security Droid on the Shadow Caster. Really really useful. That essentially free target lock must have added 1-2 extra damage to my hits every turn.

Happy to help! It makes sense because those 3 speed moves are pretty much all you ever need.

I keep nearly pulling the trigger on some magnets to do the magnet and ball bearing mod to the ships after I saw someone with Tie Bombers using them at a tournament the other week. It was really cool to see. Does anyone have any experience with them?

New Open Series announced: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/x-wing-open/

Mustafar January 28 - January 29th San Antonio, TX USA
Kashyyyk February 18 - 19th San Diego, CA USA
Yavin February 18 - 19th Birmingham, UK
Lothal February 25 - 26th TBA, Germany
Endor March 3 - 5th Seattle, WA USA
Naboo March 18 - 19th Syracuse, NY USA
Tatooine March 18 - 19th TBA, Spain
Hoth March 24 - 15th Chicago, IL USA

The Chicago tournament is at AdeptiCon, just like last year. The Seattle tournament is at the Emerald City Comic Con. The other three aren't part of bigger events.

Each tournament's winner gets to play in the Coruscant Invitational at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando and design a new card for a future expansion of the game.

Earlier this year for the first Open Series, there was just one U.S. location with others being in the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Poland and Denmark. I wonder if those latter five countries didn't have good turnout. I know there were a lot of complains from U.S. players about there being only one location for the whole country.

And it makes sense from a population standpoint — the U.S. has nearly 320 million people, while the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Poland and Denmark have just 364 million people combined. Heck, Denmark has less than 6 million. And while Spain has significantly fewer people than Italy or France (46 million vs. 61 million and 67 million, respectively), it makes sense to keep a tournament there because of X-Wing's high popularity in that country.

UK Open was a madness of ~400 players. Spain had 205. Poland 186. Denmark 152. Italy 87. France 111. I can't find numbers for Germany, but if I remember correctly it was a bit over 100.

It seems that they just decided to go with the two countries with the highest attendance on their Opens (which also are the two biggest EU X-wing communities by far) and then Germany for its more central location. The French Open had an awful organization so I guess that killed any option to be "the third", while for what I know (unofficial sources) FFG had some issues on Poland.

I agree only one Open in the US was stupid, but going from seven to only three in Europe doesn't make much more sense. Four would've been a nice number.

In other news, fuck you tournaments with shitty tables with not enough space to put everything around. I won't have problems anymore :p

I'm still excited to get a U-Wing and fly it but there isn't much tech that comes with it that gets me too excited. I like the way it looks and think it might be able to do some cool stuff but the only thing I think I like the looks of, upgrade-wise, is Baze Malbus. But even then, there are probably better crew cards to put on a large Rebel ship. Too bad the rebels don't have a 3-crew ship like the Decimator.

I agree, nothing too surprising/exciting here. I am looking forward to the unveiling of that TIE modification in the Striker pack though. Hopefully we'll know next week!

My nephew seems to be getting into this game and is getting the base game for his birthday. What expansions do you think would be good? Was thinking two small ships like Tie Advanced Prototype and Z-95. Or should I do an A-Wing and Tie Interceptor?

A-Wing and TIE Interceptor are good choices. Both are agile ships that can move really fast. They have some similarities in function and are good counterparts to each other.
The TIE Advanced is nice too and can be fun for people new to the game who just play friendly matches, which sounds like your nephew. It really needs some cards from the $100+ Imperial Raider expansion to be viable in a competitive setting, but that might not matter to your nephew for a while. The Z-95 isn't that good of a ship to balance out the rebels if you get a TIE Advanced for the Imperials though. A Y-Wing would be a slightly better option and it would add turrets to his game experience. Y-Wings are usually as cheap as any of those other ships are, since it is a very early release as well.
I would probably recommend the Interceptor and A-Wing though. If he feels more drawn to one faction than the other, he can then pick up Imperial Aces or Rebel Aces down the road to compliment his Interceptor and A-Wing.

EDIT: Oh, I misread the TIE Advanced Prototype as a vanilla TIE Advanced. The TIE Advanced Prototype doesn't require any cards from the Imperial Raider (it could really use Autothrusters from the Star Viper though, as well as Push the Limit) and is a solid ship. But I still believe that the A-Wing and Interceptor are a better pair of ships to get than a TAP and Z-95. Whoever plays rebels will probably be at a disadvantage playing a Z-95 against a TAP.

I hate big bases. It's fucking annoying when you want to move the ship, and the peg decides to get free because why not. In the last tournament, it did happen *at least* 9 times with Boba.

Well, it won't happen again. Small mod I've done to all of them using some spare magnets I had around: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_qf8EFEG_I

Magnets are probably the single best mod that can be done in this game. I don't have them, but I know someone who does and they're like a dream. Enjoy your slice of heaven, Nete.

6mm x 2mm, one in the base and another on the peg. Well, technically they are 6x2x2 as they have ring shape :p, but that's just because they are the magnets I used time ago on the small ships when magnetizing the fleet (in the peg-ship union).

The fit is almost perfect, and you just need to drill a bit the small peg that's inside the base to create some bigger surface.

Awesome, thanks a bunch. Sorry to keep picking, but what size for the ring and ball that you used for the ship connection?

I plan on jacking your entire setup with little to no critical thinking on my own :p

Fuck. I didn't realize Gfycat did left out the final seconds of the video where I mess with the peg. Uploaded it again, this time to Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_qf8EFEG_I

For big ships:
-10mm balls (an 8mm ball should be enough)
-10x3x3mm countersunk magnets (N50 strength, the higher the better. If you must go lower, don't cross the N45 line).

For small ships:
-5mm balls
-6x2x2 ring magnets (can't remember the strength, but don't go lower than N40-42).

For medium ships... it depends. Some may need the big setup (TIE Punisher i.e.), while others can go with a mix. For instance, on my ARCs I use the big magnet and the small ball.

J4AjBZq.jpg

^On regular big ships you may want to drill a bit the ship and fit the magnet there for a better grip. On the Firesprays I inverted how the ball and magnet are usually mounted due the special shape of the ship, and because I was scared to fuck it up if I messed with the ship's peg as I would have needed to drill to create space for the magnet.

I know I'm a few days late in the response, but I agree with the earlier sentiment: the A-Wing & TIE Interceptor combo is a much more balanced approach. I do really like the TIE Adv. Prototype, but the Z-95 isn't its equivalent. Z-95s are closer to basic TIE Fighters.

When I first expanded my game I DID choose a Z-95 and paired it with a TIE Defender, the logic being that both sides could take one pricier ship, and one cheap ship (named pilot X-WIng & Z-95) against (generic TIE Defender & TIE Fighter). Knowing what I know now, it probably wasn't the best choice, but it still worked out fairly well.
