Okay serious question. I know unlike FF7 and FF8 that had PC versions back in the 90s that came out with the PS1 versions Final Fantasy 9 didn't have one but, fuck me what needs to happen to get 9 on PC? Its one of the re-releases I would repurchase. I know nothing of game development but, gah it can't be that much to make a PC version of that game and not touch it right?

Based on other information and interviews from SE more than likely they don't have the source code to IX. So we might get some emulated junk.

Or you wait for VIIR to be released and then VIIIR gets made. And then maybe IX gets some love. But hopefully VIR is done before that because opera scene.

Not saying it won't happen. Once you've ported something once, subsequent ports are cheaper and the sales just keep accumulating over time. But that first hurdle takes time to clear. And with mobile the case was so obvious (a BILLION potential customers?!?!) in a way that it's not as obvious with Steam, so that's why we've been able to benefit from mobile ports.

Think of it:
Final Fantasy 3 -> DS port got ported to Mobile got ported to PC
Final Fantasy 4 -> DS port got ported to Mobile got ported to PC
Final Fantasy 5 -> Mobile port got ported to PC
Final Fantasy 6 -> Mobile port got ported to PC
Final Fantasy 7 -> Existing PC port got updated
Final Fantasy 8 -> Existing PC port got updated
Final Fantasy XIII through LR -> Brand new port, but from a source system where code was somewhat modern
Final Fantasy X/X-2 -> PS3 port got ported to PS4, both systems modern enough where it might be fairly simple to do a PC port.

FF1/2 have mobile ports, but are low interest compared to the more modern games. Conspicuously, FF9 and FF12 don't have a recent port. Although with rumours swirling around an FF12 update / port / remaster / whatever, maybe we'll get the advantage of that. 9 remains neglected. It's too bad.

9 could really really benefit from a PC port. I really loved the game but it's the FF game I replay the least because it's a bit of a slog. Battles are slow, load times are long. It's the game that could benefit the most from a lowered encounter rate, better load times, modded to reduce some of the battle effects, etc.

We'll see.

Yeah I completely understand with that. Not to mention Final Fantasy 4 is on every single thing known to man. And as you said without a PC version already existing that made 7 and 8 easy to do but now in 2015 trying to port a PS1 game made in 2000 isn't exactly easy and probably isn't cheap.

And the main reason I even want it is for improved load times. The encounter rate was insane in some spots too. It is my favorite FF game though.

Would it matter if the games are emulated or ported?
I'd buy a bunch of .iso on steam if necessary.

Well if it's just FF9 without any fixes whatsoever, not even faster load times because it's on PC as opposed to the PS1 speed I don't think I would buy it again :x. I could just emulate FF9 myself if that was the case.

At this rate seeing FFIX on PC would either be a cheap DotEMU job, after a mobile port or from a reworked version.

Bizarrely Windows is probaly the easiest and cheapest platform to develop for or port your existing title to by virtue of being open but the really problem lie is how the game was initially made, what platform specific features or libraries need to be either licenced, replicated or recoded to compatible equivalents on Windows. thankfully these days most engies are multiplatform with considerations made for each but you still get crackers things like KT's PC titles and Squares recent couple of efforts for their Japanese games. If Lightning Returns does ship resolution limited to 1920x1080 as the store page now says I don't think my desk will take the pounding my head will give it.

Soooo Witcher X Yu-Gi-Oh

I think doing a PC port would be very easy, I remember original PC ports of FFVII/VIII were basically the PSX game with an exe, or something similar, so SE could easily reproduce an enhanced version like the one we had on Steam and release it on PS4 too.
I'm pretty sure FFVIII will follow on PS4, so FFIX is only a matter of time.
