Texas gives Planned Parenthood notice of Medicaid ouster

Texas put Planned Parenthood on notice Tuesday of plans to soon cut off Medicaid funds, a move that federal judges have blocked in other Republican-controlled states, which are now waiting to see if President-elect Donald Trump will strip the organization of taxpayer money.

Planned Parenthood responded by vowing to ask a court to stop Texas from defunding clinics in January. Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Kansas are among the states where judges have denied similar efforts.

Planned Parenthood says its clinics serve nearly 11,000 women in Texas each year through Medicaid. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott pledged to kick Planned Parenthood out of the state's Medicaid program more than a year ago, joining other socially conservative governors who took similar steps in 2015, when an anti-abortion group released secretly recorded videos that it claimed showed Planned Parenthood officials profiting from sales of fetal tissue for medical research.

Investigations by 13 states have been concluded without charges of wrongdoing, although a congressional panel is still investigating. Texas' final notice to Planned Parenthood comes at a time when the 100-year-old organization is simultaneously fighting to stop Congress from also cutting off taxpayer dollars.

"Texas is a cautionary tale for the rest of the nation. With this action, the state is doubling down on reckless policies that have been absolutely devastating for women," Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said.

Why don't the GOP offered women health services without abortion and let the free market decide?

? They do? There are tons of commercial women's health clinics here (Dallas) that aren't planed parenthood and don't offer abortions.

Medicaid has been under fire in Texas in multiple areas, my wife works as an SLP and Texas legislature has made requirements for her patients much more difficult than in previous years. I have lived in Texas my whole life and love it, but that time might be coming to a close. Way to go

They are too busy supporting 'crisis pregnancy centers' that pressure women into keeping unwanted pregnancies with the promise of support and the rip it away when the kid is born. They offer free pregnancy tests! And that's it.

They'll give you thoughts and prayers too (must be white to apply) and probably some religious pamphlets.

Don't forget the self-righteous guilt and "close your legs" counseling!

I managed to bring in about $250 of donations towards PP during a month long horror movie marathon last year. They'll need all the help they can get in the coming years.

It's kinda sad as Texas is the shining jewel of Republicanism in that it's the only state that has resisted becoming a dumpster fire. At this rate either the state has to move more purple or risk being strangled by its own government.

Texas Republicans are straight up villains.

Does this look like the face of a villain to you?

Yay for small government republicans! Congrats on spending money to make a law and lose a court case! I almost wish the government would federalize Planned Parenthood and fund it completely.

Good call. They've been stuck at #4 in teen pregnancies for what seems like forever.

Texas is going to have to make some changes if they want to grab that top spot.

Texas is really a microcosm of the entire nation. Big liberal cities that produce all the GDP dominated by an ass backwards rural population that only care about guns and shitting on women's rights.

Prepare thy selves for a loss in court.

That is the issue here. Abbott and his people continuously make decisions that they know will be reversed in court just to "make a point". Many of these decisions they make hurt their most loyal supporters, the rural population. But they don't ever seem to understand that.

The majority population centers in Texas are rational and sane.

We're just drowned out by a gerrymandered state government that panders to North and East Texas where nobody but bigots and morons fucking live.

But yeah, our state government the last decade has been a fucking joke.
