The 3DS has one of Nintendo's best libraries ever

The 3DS is easily my favorite system, and I think the library just edges out the DS library. It helps that you can play both on it too.

I know people want Nintendo to move onto the Switch, but I'll be happy if they keep pumping out budget titles and ports for the 3DS for years to come.

I would also like another (probably final) hardware revision down the line.

The DS is weird for me, since it's the rare Nintendo platform where I felt that the third party offering far outpaced Nintendo's own titles in the quality department. Not that Nintendo was doing bad on the system, far from it, but my list of must-haves for the system would be surprisingly light on Nintendo titles.

I don't think it helps them out that I felt that some of their biggest franchises got some of their weakest entries on the DS. NSMB is the worst platformer of the series, 2D or 3D, and the Zelda games are very heavily flawed in spite of some moments of genuine inspiration.

I can't disagree about the hardware's poor ergonomics but in terms of library I love the 3DS. I have 110+ physical games and more great stuff is still to come in the near future.

The fact that you can play 3DS, and DS makes it likely the best Nintendo console there will ever be.

If you factor in emulation, it's GOAT level.

Some great games but I've been turned off since day 1 by the awful hardware ergonomics.

Really should have given a grip a shot.

Yeah, 3DS is pretty damn great but I 100% felt the pain of its poor ergonomics. I really can't wait for the day that Switch or Switch 2 gets a Virtual Console so I can revisit those games with different controls. I have bad hands/wrists and as a result usually couldn't play for very long without feeling like I was on pins and needles. Didn't keep me from playing a ton, but I'm sure it didn't help my situation. I tried out the grip on the OG model but that made it feel too bulky.

Anyway, when are we getting a new Luigi's Mansion?! Dark Moon was incredible.

I have less than 10 games for my 3DSXL.

Mario Kart
Donky Kong Country
Super Mario Brothers 2
Super Mario 3D Land
Fire Emblem
Zelda OoT
Zelda Between Worlds
Kid Icarus

That's all that ever interested me on the device. Those are all top tier games though.

I really need to hack it and throw some roms on it now that I think about it. Its been sitting on my desk for years.

I only recently got my 3ds about 3 months ago and I didn't go legit so I instantly have access to pretty much every good game going for the 3ds as well as everything for the ds. I've installed almost perfect emulators for anything 8 and 16 bit as also run GBA games via VC injection. This thing is the best handheld ever put out in terms of stuff to play. Wear and tear apart, this will keep me busy for absolutely years.

Eh, New Super Mario Bros 2 isn't a reimagining, and honestly neither is Link Between Worlds.

By "reimagining," I mean they're largely made up of borrowed + 2.5D-ed art from other games. They take old content from past games and assemble it into a new game.

When I talk about content, I'm never talking about level/gameplay design.

It's telling that Samus Returns, the game that's literally a remake of a past game, is the one that goes the furthest to add new content in the form of the area theming and background art.

Whenever people list their favourite 3ds titles I can't help but be a bit disappointed by the lack of variety.

I'm not complaining but I really wish 3ds was less of a multiple franchise entries machine.

?x SMT.
6x (6.5x) (8.5x) Phoenix.
4x (7x) (15x) Pokemon.
4x (5x) EO.
4x (5x) Zelda.
3x (7x) Kirby.
3x (4x) (6x) Monhun.
3x (4x) DQ.
3x (4x) FE.
3x (3.5x) Layton.
3x Mario & Luigi.
2x Bravely.
2x Zero Escape.

3x Pushmo/Pullblox.
3x BoxBoy.
3x Dillon.
Etc...

Only 1 meh Castlevania though. Fukonami.

I agree but it's not a matter of franchises, it's a matter of genres. for someone who doesn't like rpg-like games, this system has been a big disappointment, especially after the first couple of years

Samus Returns has to be the first 3ds game I'm interested in...in ages. probably since Majora's Mask remake.
edit: which was early 2015, wow.
but there might've actually been some eshop games I've been interested in or played(like the first Boxboy, which I didn't like though) since then. still, pretty barebones

For me I love Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, this game was such a fan service to someone who grew up playing A Link To The Past. The gameplay as the OP suggest is extremely polished and everything is a throw back to A Link To The Past but with enough subtle change to make it new and refreshing. Slipping between the cracks in the walls to travel between the light and dark worlds vs the magic mirror from A Link To The Past was also a nice touch.

Luigi's Mansion 2 - I had never really gotten around to a proper playthrough of Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube, maybe cause I got my GC long after that generation had wrapped up. I absolutely loved the exploration, the boss fights and the atmosphere of this game. I thought the pacing was actually amazing, a nice change from the stuff I usually play. My fingers are crossed for Luigi's Mansion 3 on the Switch.

Smash Bros - It's absolutely mind blowing that Nintendo was able to cram everything they did into the 3DS version of Smash Bros. Think back to the days of the Gamecube and Smash Bros Melee and the character lineup, then think of the complete cast of characters in Smash Bros on the Wii U, again its amazing they crammed everything, all the DLC characters even, into a portable version of Smash. The game controls well and while online has its frame rate issues, to me its still truly impressive.

Gotta agree.

The 3DS is the first handheld that has been my main gaming device for several years, as opposed to just a Pokemon/Mario Kart machine with some RPG's and platformers on the side.

In 2013 I played it for nearly 500 hours, with Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokémon Y and Bravely Default taking top spots along with Pokemon HeartGold. As such I played it more than any other device that year.

In 2016 the same thing happened with Bravely Second, Pokemon AlphaSapphire, Fire Emblem Fates, Final Fantasy Explorers and Pokémon Moon taking top spots, for a total of nearly 400 hours.

This was unthinkable with earlier handhelds.

Been playing Zero Mission on it this week. Injection of GBA games is a godsend.

I now only play GBA games on the 3DS with IPS screen or on CRT via GameCube and Game Boy Interface. All other GBA hardware compatible devices have inferior display quality.

3DS 'legally' plays Metroid, Metriod II, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and now Samus Returns. Hack it and you can add Zero Mission. Lovely. Essential device.

I'm rounding out my physical library and am wondering if I'm missing anything major.

Have:
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS
Pokemon Y
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
Pokemon Sun
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Metroid: Samus Returns
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Fire Emblem: Fates
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Rhythm Paradise: Megamix
Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash
Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Fantasy Life
Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest VIII
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Etrian Odyssey IV
Persona Q

To buy list so far:
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Luigi's Mansion 2
Pokemon: Super Mystery Dungeon
Kirby: Planet Robobot
Ever Oasis
Monster Hunter Generations
Monster Hunter Stories
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers
Etrian Odyssey Untold
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold

Tempted to import a US copy of SMT4 that I can't even play on the region locked system just to have it on my shelf lol.

My final wish for the 3DS that I know will never happen is a PSTV equivalent device that plays DS and 3DS games. It should come with a controller that has all the inputs of the available on a New 3DS, with a resistive touchpad to replicate the bottom screen functionality. There should be video display options to arrange the 2 screens in any configuration on the TV. There's currently no way to play DS/3DS games on a TV on original hardware outside of buying expensive dev kits.

Legit, if 3/4 of that library in the OP disappeared from existence, I wouldn't even blink.

I have a 3ds, and it is my picross machine.

And in that regard, the 3ds is amazing.

The DS was a lot better in the singular sense, but the 3DS plays all of the DS games, and with the 3DS's own library the sentiment is correct.

The DS library was so magical.
The DS is so underpowered, but third parties still attempted to port all kinds of genres to it, it got a library where many games felt like experiments, many with low poly 3D.

It had plenty of simulation games, casino games, racing games (GRID and Trackmania were fking excellent), original RPGs, card games, and even a Grand Theft Auto, albeit top-down. And not to mention the tons of weird brain-training like games.

The 3DS has a very safe library on the other hand, many of the same genres.
I'll admit that most of the games were very good, but if you want any of the other genres, you are better off dusting off your DS cartridge than finding those genres on the eShop.
