BBC is still running the show - sounds like it's just Netflix dealing with US distribution instead of BBCA.
I doubt the budget for S2 will change much since they're already underway, but at least Netflix is more likely to green light future seasons given how much money they're throwing around these days.

So it's the same showrunner/directors/writers, right?

This show blows Vikings and GoT out of the water (which is a testament to how good this is since I love those shows) and I'd absolutely hate to see Netflix dumb it down. Marco Polo is utterly terrible so their track record with this stuff is worrying.

I do like the battles on this show, they might not be as spectacular as battle of the basterd, but the tactics involved make a lot more sense and they do well explaining them visually.

Deal is probably good for there being future series as Netflix is so big for sure. I am pleased. Sadly no season 1 on UK Netflix yet (there is stuff like Peaky Blinders and Orphan Black though, so I expect it to turn up at some point)

I just finished watching season 1 on Netflix and was completely surprised by how good it was. I went into the first episode thinking it was going to be a low budget Game of Thrones knock off. I was wrong. I binged watched the season over 3 nights. The acting, writing, storytelling, costumes, set design, battles, and the overall themes were good. Yes, the battles and fights aren't nearly as epic as GoT, but they don't have to be. They still convey what's happening well enough.

Season 1 is currently at a respectable 92%/90% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you're at all interested in that time period of Norse and Saxon conquest, and the unification of England, and are ok with it not being 100% accurate, it's really good.

So, I am watching Vikings, The Last Kingdom and TGC's Viking lecture at the at time. I find the multiple narrative make the history more enjoyable. Is the Last Kingdom less historical accurate than Vikings? This Uhtred guy seem to change lover every 3 episodes.

Question, is there TV show that deal with the period right after Alfred the Great? What else can I watch besides waiting for season 2 of The Last Kingdom?

As a book reader, I wasn't impressed with the production quality or casting choices for the TV adaptation. I understand that it has its constraints, but I was expecting HBO-level quality..

I have been listening audiobook of the book 3 of the series, I think the writing is a lot better than the show. The "Medieval porn" aspects of the book is also a lot better.

the show can never beat Bernard Cornwell writing, let alone his sheer knowledge of History. But for what it is, the show did a great job adapting the books

I just binge watched the entire season 1 over the weekend. Fell in love with Brida. Feisty viking women are a turn on :p. But great historical piece during Alfred the Greats reign. Can't wait for Season 2 next season.

They wrapped up shooting S2 a couple of weeks ago. There are a few pics in their instagram feed from filming.

Well it was really hard to care for him since I disagreed strongly with almost all of his actions and decisions. I liked most of the other characters though and I'll gladly watch season 2.

Wow, how'd I miss this OT? I watched it a while ago an yeah... The overly sanitized dialog was bad... I'll agree that Uhtred wasn't very likable but it was entertaining enough though I kept wishing I was watching Vikings especially with all the Ragnars who combined still paled in comparison to Fimmel.

Just watched this. Uhtred is entertaining. Brida is really good though. The would be king is hilarious. Hope Alfred dies, I was rooting for the Danes the entire time, well some of the time.

Better in every way, though Ragnar is incredible in a way Uhtred kind of isn't.
And I think it's worse in every way. I've never seen a show more desperate to rush through the plot. No scene or plotline is ever allowed to settle and sink in. It's not high pace and action-filled, it's shallow.

That said, I still kind of like it. Uthred's an amusing asshole and there are some good actors. I really like Alfred.

Alfred is a Machiavellian bastard, as evidenced in season 1 when he
saddles Uhtred with debt in order to force his fealty.

I love him for it.

Eh..., has to :)
While I'm not the biggest fan of guthred his plot leads to a lot of badass action. I'm hoping they'll skip over the
uthred getting sold into slavery
bit tho. It's a cool story and def leads to some important stuff down the line but I feel like it would be too much to cover in a single season without taking away from other more exciting plot lines

Edit: much more realistic and far better acting than Vikings and I say that as a fan

There were deep changes in S1 so I assume it will be the case again, specially if they try to fit two books in one season again. Personally I would hope they can fit it all and just extend the number of seasons, but I'm aware this series numbers may not allow.

Definitely voting for this over Vikings too.
