New Ackercocke album out today. It's so good, really what you'd expect from them. Same tech/black/death/proggy thing they've got going on and I can't recommend it enough. Here's a song off of it. https://youtu.be/-DX21xOdQo0

Man, i'm so eager to listen to it. Akercocke is one of my fav bands that people don't even know it exists. Issues at work will probably make me listen much later today or tomorrow =(

Also looking forward to the new Pagan Altar and Leng Tch'e.

Saw Pallbearer last night. Good show, but was surprised they were pushed to the smaller upstair stage (capacity 138ish) which didn't fill up either. Maybe 80 people? Thought these guys would have drawn more than that in a college town.

My buddy and his girlfriend left halfway thru saying this wasn't what they were expecting with Pallbearer. This was after telling me a few days ago that he had listened to about 20 songs and was digging it. Ok.....

Yellow Eyes quietly has a new full-length just around the corner. There is a review out already, but no official previews yet. Being the hound that I am, I found an online radio archive that includes one track off the new album which will be entitled Immersion Trench Reverie. I was already of the opinion that these guys have one of the most idiosyncratic yet unforced styles of black metal in the world, and this track has blown me the fuck away. I was able to hold off my own hype for a pretty long time, but now I can't wait for this.

That is sorta bizarre, but then again, I wouldn't think they'd be a hit among college kids.
How was their sound? I saw them a year ago with Baroness and their sound was so thick and warm while still absolutely crushing.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Has anyone heard the new Sannhet record? At times it reminds me of a fast, heavy Explosions in the Sky. Fans of Alcest and other blackgaze type stuff would probably like it too.

This is cool, thanks for sharing it

I like the blackgaze-type sound but there's so few bands/albums that actually click with me (doesn't help when most abandon the metal elements completely). Definitely wish it had vocals though

Thought they sounded great! Pretty much like you described. One of the bad things of seeing concerts at a bar in Iowa is that alot of the bands just go thru the motions to get the show over and I felt that with them. Still, it was a good performance.

I still find it bizzare watching a video and seeing those deep growls come out of someone female. She's a damn good singer, but there is a certain cognitive dissonance thing happening when I watch her do it.

Then you must check out Onielar's voice on Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult: https://youtu.be/jRe4Caed-Wg and Bethlehem: https://youtu.be/dRe5BtzBi3Y, and Lori Bravo's on Nuclear Death: https://youtu.be/0Z491nMRCfA

Both play guitar as well, and beat many of the male vocalists in their genres.

Oh yeah, I noticed that, but because there was no video of her singing, the dissonance wasn't there. It's a visual thing, rather than an aural thing, if that makes sense?

Either way, they all do a great job and I couldn't care less what gender they are, but actually seeing them do the deep growls is...odd in some way.

In that case, here's an old live clip from 1990 of Nuclear Death: https://youtu.be/D0PKwrAeGII

Plus, live clips of...
Mythic (1992): https://youtu.be/4P0KRthlWN4
Derketa: https://youtu.be/t2KmgHD7wG4

Hey guys, just got back from a vacation so pardon the late reply, but thanks again for those power metal rec's! Salem Spade, Powerwolf and that Goblin King song stood out the most to me, definitely gonna look into them more.

re: fucking brutal female-fronted death/doom. One of the absolute finest examples.

Thorr's Hammer (WA)

That's what I was thinking of too when I saw that discussion. Haven't listened to this in ages.

Speaking of going back to stuff I haven't listened to in a while, if anyone is in for some droney doom/ambient with some black metal I guess should check out Kodiak. That build up towards the end about halfway through kills me every single time. It's a shame they split up.

Why do music documentaries get me into a band? I had zero interest in Cannibal Corpse until I ran into a doc about them on YouTube which was pretty cool. Watching one on Morbid Angel now but didn't get too far before I had to head to work. Again, no real interest in MA either but now I'm taking another look and kind of digging them too.

Cannibal Corpse vid. This is like 3 hours long.

The Haunted just released a new album on the 25th of August and I completely missed it. Haven't had the time to listen to it properly, but the little I've managed to is really good. My biggest problem with the current line up are the vocals. Aro's output is just so one dimensional it fails to bring much needed depth to the songs. The song writing is varied and there's surprising amount of interesting stuff in there, but the vocals... I wish Dolving was still with the band.

Speaking of Dolving, he's current project IAmFire is quite trippy:

I'm getting more and more into alot of metal that seems to mix Black Metal type stuff with more melodic and atmospheric aspects, on top of well, uh, better sound mix.
I know of Deafheaven, Alcest, and i recently found out about Harakiri For The Sky and they're awesome. Here's Jhator by them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXNBM6HJCSA

Anyway, as i understand people often name it as blackgaze, right? Or atmospheric black metal i guess, or maybe not black metal at all. Iunno, metal has so many fucking sub-sub-subgenres.

Anyway, that stuff is awesome. Someone gimme more

A lot of good recommendations by others already that I agree with, but you may also like "Au Champ Des Morts" which is a band I recommended earlier this year in this thread and "Year of No Light", both are also French bands. The latter is kind of a fusion of stuff, there's definitely some blackgaze tracks but they're really post-metal but I recommend checking out both.

Au Champ Des Morts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RNzbpnVdlA
Year of No Light (it's not every day you see two drummers). Not a blackened track but it's one of my favourites from the band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0VuOfvYpko&t=3m8s This one is more blackened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdeJ_ylcVf0

And yeah I'd say blackgaze is the correct genre - some people say "blackened shoegaze" but it 's the same thing, Alcest being the quintessential example of blackgaze. There's a bit of cross over of atmospheric black metal and blackgaze because some bands do a fusion of it with some tracks/albums. You may also want to explore all the genres that are "blackened" like "blackened doom" if you're a doom metal fan. The thing with "atmospheric black metal" can be confusing because a lot of black metal tries to invoke atmosphere with how instruments are sometimes overlayed and how a lot of vocals aren't even supposed to be audible to "listen to" but part of the atmosphere, however some bands are very distinct with its themes of atmosphere, like using nature or bands like Summoning with Tolkien themes. I'd say black metal that invokes traditional satanism themes is what one can differentiate from atmospheric black metal, so bands like Bathory, Gorgoroth, Behemoth (early) are not what I'd call atmospheric for example but for example some of Agalloch's albums, Wolves in the Throne Room, Summoning are what I'd call atmospheric black metal.
