The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

saw the south park episode. i have a strong distaste for the show now, so pretty much anything that isn't in the style of scott tenorman must die, where there's no message or propaganda, is the best type of south park for me. the bp oil spill one pretty much never touches on the problem in the gulf aside from captain hindsight, and it's free to pretty much be about kenny, cartman, and mintberry crunch.

Is Shaun of the Dead really considered a parody film?

Was it directly referencing scenes, characters, settings and scenarios from other serious zombie movies? I just think of it as a zombie comedy.....it's no more of a parody than Zombieland or Warm Bodies.

It was parodying overall genre tropes rather than referencing examples from specific movies.

I agree about the first act being hasty, but I guess it was the calm before the storm.

Also JP 3D is only in IMAX here :(

the goldblum hate comes out of nowhere. i mean jeez.

also, one of the more irritating things he does is give nicknames to characters instead of calling the characters by their name. say the ferris beuler thing once, make two people laugh, and just call the kid tim for the rest of the video.

Yeah, this wasn't one of his best. The nitpicking was everywhere, the nicknames were kind of stale, and if he wanted to talk about a Jurassic Park movie because of the re-release, I'm surprised he didn't just do Jurassic Park III, since that movie is a hot mess of stupidity and poor filmmaking. In fact, he so rarely discusses the actual filmmaking techniques of a movie (outside of poor writing, hammy acting, and major story flaws), so the whining of Spielberg's lighting in this movie seemed petty and unusual. I guess it just got on his nerves.

But, for some reason, this review got me thinking of early 90s movies he hasn't reviewed yet. I'm kind of surprised he never did Dante's Peak or Volcano (I remember sort of liking Dante's Peak when I was young, but I always thought Volcano was garbage), and they, or at least Dante's Peak, has another "Boomer Must Live" scene where the dog hops across melting lava to a row boat that a dying lady pushes or something. I don't remember much of the movies, but maybe they aren't bad enough for reviews?

Also, I always wanted him to do a review of Tall Tale, a la his Pagemaster and 90s kids movie reviews. Or Jumanji.

If you want cinematic analysis, you should go for Chick's.

Speaking of comparison, Lupa does want Linkan't. I mean, Lupa's Charmed retrospective is handled much better than what Linkara does in Power Rangers.

Couldn't even bother finishing the AI one. Seems like he came into that movie with a few big bugs up his ass and it's 40 minutes long.

Actually he comes out liking the AI movie in the end. He gets upset and offers some insight on why the movie was made in the first place. If you have trouble just fastfoward to the last 5-10 minutes.

Jesus, does he throw in a podcast in the middle of the review or something?

The 10 minutes I did watch were about half TMZ spoof, half a detailed history of the movies development hell. I can only imagine it proceeds to plod along twice as much as the actual film from there.

Re: ^, Maybe I'll try again later. I just find the whole "WHO MADE WHICH PART!?!?//111" thing really tiresome in general.

Yeah, watched more of it. He doesn't really 'come around' at the end, he just decides it's ok it's bad because Spielberg was doing Kubrick a favour. Meanwhile demonstrating he never put even an ounce of effort into understanding the film and just going with kneejerk reactions.

Any time someone insists there's nothing in the film to make you think it's robots at the end, I tune out of their opinion on this film. Fine if you don't get it in the first place, but 12 years later still arguing it's an interpretation that makes sense is just dumb.

doug rarely offers any actual insight into his reviews. a lot of it is going over the plot of the film and what he likes or doesn't like. sometimes, it comes across as especially juvenile, as in any time where he decides to name characters by whatever nickname he comes up with. it just comes across as lazy. the editorials are pretty bad too. i think you need a lot of time to prepare something if you're going to take a serious shot at analyzing it. you can't just write up an essay in two weeks.

but i don't watch the nostalgia critic because i'm looking for someone who knows what they're talking about (that's more half in the bag's thing... and lindsay's too). i more or less like seeing bad movies condensed down to just the worst parts. i actually thought son of the mask was a pretty good 'review' in that regard.

the one thing i don't get is the gun. is it a real gun? is he just fond of it? why act like it's a toy? so bizarre.

Nostalgia Critic broadly was a good idea. Reviewing nostalgic things, the choices all pretty good, fun time wasting. The character itself was tough to watch and largely annoying.

the character became hard to watch when doug decided it was a character. there was a time when it was just him in some shit he found around the house talking about older things. and that was fine. the critic/nerd battle was probably the turning point where he started looking at this thing as a character he created. the movies were dumb, but the worst part was how much of a mary sue the critic is during to boldly flee (AND THEN SELF-INSERT HEROICALLY SAVES THE DAY AND BECOMES THE UNIVERSE! ...what).

then there's the fallout from demo reel and 'the review must go on.'

i think demo reel was an interesting idea. i don't think he really knew what the hell he was doing. i think he accidentally stumbled on a great concept with the convention episode that turns into a lost in translation parody. that would have been an interesting concept- the guy's life is unintentionally better movie parody material than the movie parodies he intentionally makes. instead we're treated to a fucking dark backstory that belonged nowhere near absolutely everything else about the show. but that's okay because it turns out that it was the nostalgia critic the entire time (as an aside, i did like the review must go on all the way up to rob slowly turning around as a dinosaur). and doug talks to the critic and discusses how so important the critic is and holy shit why is he doing this.

if he was going to make the critic into a character, i think it would have been better to have the character have different opinions than doug's. half in the bag does the same thing by being characters who are also the reviewers, but they call attention to what they're doing a lot, and know it's silly. doug is way too serious. and so is this post.

The character is fine when Doug knows the movie being reviewed. It's when the movie is hard to criticize or he isn't too familiar with is when the character becomes annoying.

Do we have any info if the ratings have been better after NC came back?

It stabilized so that is good, but not really like at its high point.

It seems like whenever I visit the site anymore I see an announcement that content providers were leaving the site =/, the internet video bubble kinda bursted or something?

It's mostly the guys who don't get much followers, though I guess Jew Wario has big fans. They still appear as guests from time to time, like him, Linkara and Suede do Pokemon movie reviews.

This seems like a good a place to ask as any.

Is anyone else having major problems with blip? Videoes basically load forever on the site for me on chrome. If I open it on Firefox, it will take maybe 5 minutes before it actually loads. Until then, it's just the spinny loading circle.

A few days ago, it was even worse and the player just wouldn't work for me at all. All I'd get is a grey screen with 'BLIP' in large font.

Now, it's back to infinite loading. Can anyone help?

Do you have an adblocker? I believe Blip videos will now respond to an adblocker addon now

Sounds like what it could be. I only check the site on occassion now and saw Linkara put up a video about letting the ads play.

Not a fan of the mid video ads I have to say. ESPECIALLY when they try to make it a joke or something.

I have it off. I'm not talking about the "Do not use ad block or we make you wait 90 seconds" stuff. It's just the loading signal going on forever.

Is your flash player up to date? If it is, I haven't got any idea seems like it's something at your end =/

Funny thing, I have adblock disabled in their site much like here in GAF after the annoying blip crap, yet their ads don't load regardless lol

Funny thing, their ads are the one thing that does load for me. The part where they benefit works, but I still don't get my video.

Rob Walker gives an explanation for the TMZ skits in the A.I. review. http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=46264&start=200#p812707

Apparently, they took down the review with the TMZ rant off of YouTube. So it's kind of similar to how Tommy Wiseau reacted to his review of The Room.
Personally, I think Doug should have commented on this before doing the TMZ stuff, or make it a separate video like "The Tommy Wiseau Show".

i think the nerd started as a character and became more or less james over time. the opposite is true of the nostalgia critic.

i'm okay with the movies. in fact, i think it's neat a bunch of people got together with no budget and just had fun. the dumb part is when it started to get serious. they're not playing fake characters doing things- they're playing themselves with whatever internet name they adopted. phelous gets around it because he knows it's fucking ridiculous. doug builds up his self-insert to be the messiah and the literal center of the universe.

Phelous is always great in those. I just wish there was an easier way to watch the whole movies in one part without buying the DVD's. The site is terrible and the videos are buried on the site and split across 6-10 pages each with a really shitty Google search frontend. But then again I've complained about their site design many times before.

Erm what

There's a huuuuuuuuuuge difference between Doug and NC.

I missed that one. What exactly does it say in relation to NC being a "Mary Sue" chatacter?

i was kinda liking to boldly flee until episode 4 or 5 when he went into judge dredd parody mode. i didn't dislike it until doug appears in the video and offers the nostalgia critic a choice to step into the real world or not. but it's there that doug is this all-powerful creator. he is the writer of an internets show, and the nostalgia critic is a character.

and in the review must go on, it turns out that the creator simply cannot do without the nostalgia character. doug can't function properly and spends the video wondering if he should bring the character back. it's as though the nostalgia critic is more powerful than his creator.

the site design is truly awful. i only watch doug's, lindsay's, and phelan's videos, but sometimes i look at what todd or brad has to offer. is there anything else worth watching? probably, but i would never know because of the labyrinthian design choices.

maybe now, but early on this wasn't the case. things got weird about the time of kickassia, but i think it turned a corner with the critic v nerd stuff. before that it was just doug with an internet name doing things and trying to make people laugh.

I've never bothered with the films they do. I can't get through the first part. Closest I ever came was the "Dark Nella" thing for Nostalgia Chick that was spiced into her reviews. But it was usually just a short bit at the beginning and end of the review.

The ones I watch religiously are as follows:

Nostalgia Critic (Of course. Been watching him since the AVGN did that famous brawl with them.)

Sibling Rivalry (This is really good. They don't always fight over the movie though but it's like a Siskel and Ebert or a Jay and Mike relationship)

Nostalgia Chick (As well as most of the other stuff her team does. Not all though.)

Todd in the Shadows (Pop Song Reviews and One Hit Wonderland are entertaining. Especially when I don't like the song.)

Film Brain (Both Projector and Bad Movie Beatdown, especially when he said Equilibrium was bad after he first joined and everyone crucified him for it.)

Paw (Music Movies is great. I like musicals.)

Last Angry Geek (When he does a Doctor Who episode. I think others do Doctor Who episodes but it's hard to figure out because of the goddamned site design.)

Brad Jones and his gang (I get a weird sense of enjoyment watching them talk about a film at 3AM or when he does bad porn movies or pretty much anything else like Brad Tries.)

Blockbuster Buster (Who doesn't like terrible blockbuster movies?)

Angry Joe (His videos make me the opposite of angry.)

Mike J (Especially Shameful Sequels or Infomercialism. Hang on a Second is great too as well as short. They're just little videos about weird things he noticed in movies.)

Oh my goodness. Brad Jones just put up a review of HeartBeeps...

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/bj/tcs/39396-the-cinema-snob-heartbeeps

I remember watching this out of curiosity. What an... odd movie. Andy Kaufman as an android trying to find love while being pursued by evil robots who don't have the ability to love because their hearts are black as are their cold metal cases.

Edit: Oh, and by the way. In case you ever wonder why "Ascending order" comment streams are a terribly stupid as hell idea, I give you Exhibit A:

iVfvUSbvZmGh8.png

Seriously? Put the stupid "FIRST!" comments at the top of the first page and hide newer comments on page 30. How stupid is that? It's a comment stream, not a discussion forum. Because if it was a forum, a moderator would have booted and banned his ass in 2 minutes.

His early vids probably, but it is established even before that it was mainly for exaggeration purposes.

I watch her occasionally. Yes. And I forgot to mention her on my list because I am an idiot. So can I go back and retroactively add her to my list? I loved her Tremors episodes to death.

I don't know what Brows Held High is though.

And Linkara is mainly comic books. I don't read comic books. I only watched one episode because it was a comic book about the Game Boy.
