The Old School Music Thread

I know I'm not the only one who laments the bygone era of music... I grew up on Lena Horne, The Beatles, Cab Calloway, The Jackson 5, Elvis Presley and Costello, Billy Joel, The Police, Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Flash, Whitney, etc... I can name SO MANY MORE but this thread is for those of us who miss REAL music... Whether that be Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop or Country...

I like a lot of these songs and artists, but people are still making good 'real' music.

True... But MOST of this rap and what passes for R&B, rock, etc doesn't feel like real hip hop, rock or big band. Some of them are really good like Chance the Rapper, Jidenna, Mickey Guyton, JellyRoll, Janelle Monae, etc. They give me hope but the mainstream likes this "no meaning" music these days.

Here are some entertaining pieces I always pull up:

If it's alright...I'll do something a little different and [living up to my username] provide some "ultimate masters/versions" for a selection previously mentioned songs/albums in the thread. For anyone interested in getting the best sources and who has the means for both playback and acquisition.

It is my duty to spread the gospel of good mastering! (lol) Though I'll warn this is a slippery slope, ignorance can be bliss and going down the rabbit hole could result in a level of fussiness from which you may never recover (this applies to your wallet too). For some of these albums I've gone through up to 20 different releases encompassing most of the distinct masters (and some mixes) across various formats. Subjective judgement is done with an eye towards faithfulness and balance, objective judgement includes various parameters like dynamic range and eq. Everything compared in high quality, lossless rips that had RMS levels matched, clipping avoided and bit-perfect output; on monitor headphones and a quality dac/amp. Some of these are best of a bad situation when it comes to recording quality and baked eq choices, while others are nearer-reference. Some reduced <30s samples included.

I know I'm going to love this thread already and I'm not even past the OP.

I grew up in the 90s and 00s, and nearly everything after 2010 has been terrible so that only way to go is backwards - which is fine because I've grown up with an appreciation for older stuff.

Vice City got me into 80s music, and there's a very distinct flavour to various genres and periods of that decade. I can listen to any station from that game, and it gave me an appreciation for genres I wouldn't normally have paid attention to.

More recently I developed a love for the 70s. I've still got lots to learn from that decade, but I've also got my sights set on the 60s. I'm going to enjoy this thread.

Audiophile Audiophile I don't know how often you mess with your foobar setup, but newer versions have dark mode if you want to strip away the remaining white UI
