Great episode! Thank god some one else thinks there's nothing wrong with nintendo going 3rd party. The only thing they excel at is games, and I don't want to deal with what they suck at, which is most of everything else.

If Nintendo went third party I'd worry somewhat about the various studios they work with on exclusive titles. If Nintendo didn't have hardware to support a lot of those projects would probably not happen.

I'd be more worried that the thinner margins on software and the loss of all revenue from hardware, peripherals, licensing agreements, and the eshop would result in massive cuts in capacity and a real cap of one or two titles a year. Without the cash flow from those things, which while in some cases meager is still revenue that keeps the lights on, Nintendo would almost never be in a position to risk making something like Splatoon. I'd also imagine sales of their big software would be hurt significantly as the long tail will not be as long when you have so much competition on the platform.

I really don't think the math works for them to go third party and produce at the rate we're seeing today.

I feel like with the Wii U at least, they lost more money then they made on hardware. As for you other point, I don't think there's good evidence to show that by becoming a multiplatform publisher, nintendo will stop making games like splatoon. They already rely heavily on using their existing IP to sell new gameplay concepts and I don't see that changing. Also some multiplatform publishers invest in weird new IPs, like ubisoft and I don't see anything that showing that nintendo can't be any different. As for software sales it can go both ways, by being multiplatform the tail may not be as long but the install base is higher, though games like minecraft do have long tails on multiplatform. Furthermore though you didn't mention this, another argument brought up often is that with their own hardware nintendo has the ability to create unique game play experiences. This is true to some extent, but if we look at the games on Wii U I don't think enough of them use the hardware gimmicks meaningfully enough to justify the existence of a console.

You're not getting 20+ Nintendo games a year if it's third party. You're not getting its niche games or third party localizations either.

Anyway, Metroid Prime Federation Force. The guy behind the game actually had the idea 10ish years ago after finishing Hunters and seems really excited to expand the Metroid lore, so I don't think Nintendo just slapped the name on some cyber soccer game. That said, the game is totally toxic and should probably be cancelled or shelved until a real Metroid game is announced. I have never seen a game get such a negative reaction. When the positive end of things is "well, this isn't at all what I wanted" and the negative side involves murder, that's a bad sign. Even totally reasonable comments about the game make people furious; the game is a fucking blackhole that sucks in reason.

I don't disagree in a general sense, but honestly I'm not sure they could compete as a 3rd party on other consoles. Like the Splatoon example given on the podcast, that feels like the sort of game that could easily get completely snowed under if it had to compete with every other MP shooter.

SuperPac mentioned that. I touched on the financial realities of not controlling your own destiny or being able to go to the online shop/accessories piggy bank.

But you're right, if Nintendo can create the next Minecraft then going 3rd party is a no brainer. Simple!

I wrote that post late at night so I might not have explained myself as well as i could have. My point was that games with long tails are not exclusive to nintendo platforms. I just think most of the fears of nintendo going 3rd party are unfounded and come from a need to maintain the status quo as well as nostalgia.

I'm not sure I could care less about the nostalgia angle, I just want Nintendo to keep putting out software and I don't think it works financially if they go software only, at least not on the scale we are used to.

I'm surprised Stewie sided with the notion that Nintendo should go third-party after what happened to Sega.

Not sure if Kevin has noticed but PSN has been down far more than Live or the Nintendo Network. I can understand his frustrations though with not having a proper account system.

Well when you consider the long history of terrible business decisions on Sega's part it's not really surprising where they landed. Nintendo doesn't have that history.

I can understand why Sega's precedent would make people question what a third-party Nintendo would look like... but the circumstances would be totally different, given Nintendo's financial position today (or even after a stillborn NX) compared with Sega's.

But it's kind of a mystery how gamers would react to a third-party Nintendo. Sega might suggest that the route doesn't necessarily open the software sales floodgates the way some people would suggest.

On the other hand, even if you don't agree that the quality of what it was producing took a dip after the Dreamcast, little of what it produced had the broad appeal that so many Nintendo titles do. What would Mario Kart 8 have sold if it were released this year on Xbox and PS4? (IHS predicts global sales of 54M units between the two platforms by the end of 2015) ...I really don't know.

I don't know if it's just my late night tired crankiness, but I think they came off a bit distasteful because of the discussion they had about Iwata's death.Might just be me, though.

A solid podcast after that, though!

Mike's lack of empathy for people who can't navigate their way through the highs and lows of life on earth without Jon Stewart to hold their hand is disturbing.

Guys, Hot Shots Golf was announced for the PS4 last year at TGS! We haven't heard anything since.

The trailer is very Japanese.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qETGgD0ZiAU

From IGN:

Codenamed New Minigol Project, the title will offer "open-world entertainment focusing on golf" and will leverage the power of the new console and its social features. Footage of the game shown alongside the announcement teases the ability for players to develop their own golf resort. Gameplay details, launch window and regions were not announced for the Clap Hanz-developed title but more information will be shared early next year.

I meant to stop in after the least episode but I forgot. Anyways, since I've talked some shit about Phil in the past, I thought it would only be fair to also pop in to say something positive.

Phil has been really funny lately!

This post giving CJ grief made me recall that I was really scratching my head about his praise for The Order, after I was pretty sure I remembered he was really lukewarm or even negative about it in an earlier episode. So I had a few minutes and looked it up. (At the time I chalked it up to misattributing Mike's comments to CJ... but nope, appears flip-floppy :)

BONUS: Greg asks if Game Club is ever going to happen (this episode is from March).

...that's no big deal to me. I'd rather hear a regular episode than a GC episode, even if I've played the game, I think.

The Order has problems, absolutely. There's no reward for exploration (if anything it's more detriment). The gun battles are always telegraphed and overly long. Some cinematics and quicktime events really overstay their welcome. It does that thing I hate and makes you walk while it tells whatever story it needs to tell before you can get out of the location you're in. I am pretty sure I acknowledged these many issues in the 'cast where I reported I'd finished the game.

That said, I like the visuals a lot, I think the mashup of period piece and more fantastical weapons works extremely well. I like the story (generally) and acting. There are a number of interesting set pieces in the game. But overall I liked it for being a shooter that offered something different. Unfortunately bland, but different.

Re: Assassin's Creed II that game didn't grab me. But Brotherhood did.

My favorite Assassin's Creed games--and the only ones I've finished--are I and III. The two most loathed games in the series. So, whatever.

AC1 was incredible. We'll never see such a cool vision for a game with a big budget like that again.

I'm kind of surprised Phil hasn't posited that Iwata was murdered due to slumping Wii U sales like what happened to Gunpei Yokoi after the Virtual Boy. #followthemoney
