Edit!
Punk cannot be defined.

There are so many sub-genres it becomes difficult. If you think it fits, be sure to include them and give your reasoning. There are so many bands that produced an album or a single it becomes mind boggling.

On top of that, I would like to hear about your favorite places for shows. No, I'm not talking about stadiums! I'm talking about the places where those corners in buildings are actually bars, where stickers are plastered on the walls, the cymbals give you Tinnitus, and the bartender looks like Mike Ness and he pours you a stiff one!

There is so much history it is best if you visit Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock

For those that are new to punk, I submit that this should be your first experience:

Bad Religion

This song should resonate:
21st Century Digital Boy (Live)

I want to post the Greg Gaffin Punk Manifesto, and yet at the same time I don't want to link to a bad area of the net. Google my friend... google. I will ask a mod if I can post it if the need arises.

Let's go.

Ska? Emo? Celtic? All are welcome in here.

Simple. Effective? Awesome.

The last punk band I really got into was Gallows...not so much after that though. I need some more punk besides the staples of the genre.

If you ever get the opportunity, see Gallows live. I saw them a couple years ago in NYC and they blew me away.

Going to see Rise Against and Bad Religion together in May. So pumped.

I grew up listening to a ton of it, but those are my top two...probably.

Pennywise is probably the definition of punk to me due to the fact they were the first real punk band I ever got into.

During high school my tastes widened a little and these were some of my favourite bands:

Bad Religion
Unwritten Law
Lagwagon
MXPX
Mad Caddies
Less Than Jake
No Fun At All
No Use For A Name
Hi-Standard
Propaghandi
ALL
Descendents
The Dwarves
The Bouncing Souls
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
Strung Out
Frenzal Rhomb

And I could keep going on for a while.....

These days I'm a huge fan of A Wilhelm Scream. Definitely my favourite band of the last 5 years.

There's probably a lot more stuff on my computer at home but that list came from a quick flick through my ipod.

I don't listen to this type of music much anymore so I don't know many of the newer bands in the scene.

Goldfinger, ska-punk ftw

I used to love Goldfinger.. before John Feldmann became an asshole and their music became overproduced garbage pop punk.

Hell yeah! That's the stuff.

Though I would have picked The Horse as my example:

That's actually my second favourite song by them. I had to go with 'The King is Dead' since it's my favourite. ;D

I used to help moderate their forums when I was a kid so I used to get free tickets for their shows whenever they came to England.

John was such a nice guy the first time I met him, but he kept acting more and more like a dick with every tour. It was so disappointing to see.

The other guys are awesome though, especially Darrin and his wife Vicky.

I hope their newer stuff is better now that their old guitarist is back.

Snuff's Demmamussabebonk may well be the best straightforward rock album ever, either thank or drummer Duncan Redmonds one-off with Guns n' Wankers 'For Dancing and Listening'.

I listened to nothing but punkrock back in the day. I could list all my faves from Burning Heart, Fat Wreck, Bad Taste, Nitro, Epitaph, Asian Man, Vagrant ad nauseum, but here's the acts that stuck:

Fugazi
.
.
.
.

.
Dead Kennedys
Operation Ivy
Propagandhi
Descendents
.
.
some Bad Religion

EDIT: Oh, and the Bouncing Souls were a very important band for me for many years. They still manage to strike a chord.

Pretty sure NOFX-GAF is a big crowd.

Hi-Standard love ? Anyone ?

Don't think I've heard anything by them other than their California Dreaming cover.

Any recommended albums?

I tried to listen to some newer punk bands, but I honestly can't stand most of it. Maybe its not for me anymore, but the scene is pretty bad IMO.

I still listen to anything Bad Religion puts out but The Process of Belief to me was their last good album.

I'm still up to date with A Wilhelm Scream, even after my punk "phase" I still listen to them frequently and await new material.

Against me are awful nowadays, Disco Before the breakdown had me hoping for something amazing, too bad. Reinventing Axl Rose and As the eternal cowboy are still two good albums.

Brand New was a good "punk" band, but they're even better as an indie band, Devil and God > everything else they've done

Millencolin surprised me when home from home was decent and Kingwood was actually good. Their newest album sucks, still hopeful as they were one of the first bands I ever got into.

Rise against are so dull to me now, Revolution Per Minute is still a decent listen though. I'm amazed at the popularity they've attained as they're one of the most generic bands atm.

RX Bandits are another band that I liked as a "punk" band but like a whole lot more when they progressed into other styles. They're better now than they ever were.

The Lawrence Arms are to me still a good band. Will listen to anything they put out, that includes The Falcon albums.

Lagwagon's Resolve is a pretty good listen.

Propagandhi's Today's Empires and Potekin City Limits still get plenty of spins

Polar Bear Club started out with a great EP "The Redder The Better" but they have gotten worse with every release since.

At The Drive-In still gets plenty of plays as does Bear Vs. Shark. Few bands survived my maturing taste in music.

Long list of rambling.

I almost forgot Refused. The Shape of Punk to Come gets played occasionally if I'm in the mood. I also had a bit of a International Noise Conspiracy kick, but they're meh to me now.

OK MorisUkunRasik, I forgive you. I saw the Brand New mention. Everything's ok now, we're still buds.

You even agree on which album is their best! (even though they're all awesome)

/swoon

Maybe I will start that Brand New appreciation thread after all...

Agreed on Thrice. I never thought they were a top tier band in the past and I don't think they're much better nowadays.

They have done some awesome songs though.

'Stare at the Sun' is a damn good song and I really liked 'The Messenger' from the Alchemy Index.

Snipped - loads of good stuff

Agreed with nearly everything you said. It's like you read my mind.

I recommend checking out 'The Original Cowboy' by Against Me, by the way. It's the only good thing they've released in the past five years.

Witchfinder General

punched Wheelchair Mike
I mainly listen to Hardcore in the Punk genre but I do enjoy some more "punk rock" bands.

Here's my list:

Bad Brains
Black Flag
Poison Idea
Jerry's Kids
By the Grace of God
NOFX
The Offspring
Agnostic Front
Biohazard (borderline)

thanks for the laugh
the vast majority of bands that i've listened to for the last decade+ have been touched by the great punk cracken.

you could barely find a common musical thread between many of them, it's all about the circles they move in, the scenes they come from, the shows they play and the people that turn up. it defies description, but is innately understandable to anyone involved in it.

for example: you wouldn't usually find a bunch of punk dudes at an americana folk/country show, but if that show had chuck regan or austin lucas on the bill, the crowd wouldn't be entirely different from if the bands playing were blasting out power cords at fest.

as for recommendations, i'm gonna be that guy and recommend my friends' band: http://bangersbangers.bandcamp.com/

Folk Punk is pretty cool - You should also try Blackbird Raum, Asking for it!, Jhonny Hobo, Violent Femmes...

I really love Bad Religion. But I've been listening to Rise Against and Against Me! alot lately. Sex Pistols are awesome and Me First And The Gimme Gimmes were the band my wife and I played when we walked into our weddings reception. That is probably her favorite punk rock band.
