The Technomancer |OT| Get your ass to Mars!

Man, I loved this game. Maybe something wrong with me, because I dropped quite a few of AAA-greatreviews-titles halfway through, but easily invested 30+ hours into the Technomancer. There is something so nice and addictive in there, despite it being clunky at times, and the combat is so challenging, but so enjoyable when you master it. Still wish for a quick travel option, because constant backtracking gets tiresome at times, but as a huge fan of cyberpunk and Dune setting I was still able to enjoy my journey.

What's the best way to build if I'm interested in a battlemage sort of playstyle? Melee first with the option for offhand spell casting is my type of thing. I was a Knight Enchanter in DA: Inquisition and I cross-built signs and combat in The Witcher 3.

Should I do Warrior or Guardian tree combined with Technomancer? Also, should I invest in the combat tree or the technomancer tree first?

EDIT: If I opt for the Rogue tree can I use guns and spells, ignoring melee? Or will that just cause me to be stuck with a dagger as my primary source of damage?

The guns seem to have a coodlown period and the spell resources aren't enough to really handle combat. If you want to be a caster in this you pretty much have to be a battlemage and you'll have to get into melee.

I personally wouldn't go guardian, blocking in the game feels iffy especially with how many encounters have a lot of enemies. Dodging feels a lot better, and warrior / rogue's dodge will let you get out to get space for your spells after wading in for melee.

All of the builds can be combined with casting though. I'd probably invest in spell tree first and then the melee build.

Alright, cool. The warrior tree sounds like what I'd wanna invest in, but I just don't like the idea of using a staff weapon. Are the rogue weapons more like daggers or swords? I know that's kind of nit-picky but I'm not really a dagger guy.

More like machetes than either of those I guess.

Yeah, glove (electric fist) is a spell so you can use it with all weapons . Staff stance is called Warrior stance I think.

ah, so there is a staff stance then? and the glove is on in all stances?

Warrior - staff
Rogue - knife and gun
Guardian - shield and mace.

All of the above can use Technomany spells, the glove boosts Technomany power and isn't in itself a weapon or stance though there is a fist skill attack on the Technomancy tree, essentially all three classes are seen as battle mages though you don't have to use Technomancy if you don't want to.

oh
hmm, I didn't get that, probably because the staff and "magic" trainer were the same dude.

I actually like staff, but since I don't have to stick to it now I might try the other stances as well, most people seem to do rogue here?

I went pure staff and found it beastly. Good dodge, you can buff your crit rate hugely with gear and the upgrades. I found the tornado skill also wrecked groups if you time it right. I tried all three stances though and found them all pretty solid so you can't go wrong, just try all three and find the one that feels most comfortable is my advice :)

Is it feasible to go two disciplines? Like warrior and rogue. Cause I've been pumping points into warrior and Technomancer but wanna go rogue now.

You'll have a hard time maxing two trees, let alone three.
This. Not sure when the max level is but I completed rogue 95% of the way, including upgrades to skills, and I moved on to technomancer.

If I'm using technomancer outfit I might as well put points into that tree lmao. I heard mid 30s you stop getting points, so if that's the case I might have 1.5 trees filled out. Maybe a bit more.

Rogue is great for keeping distance and dodging a lot. You can also stab continuously for poison damage. There's a party member whose passive is they up dagger damage (they use rogue style too) so having them around is a must so your damage is great. Without them you have to depend on party members too much for damage dealing, and they're serviceable but largely idiots so I don't really want to count on their help.

Absolutely as not all the skills in a tree are useful or to everyone's taste but unless you swap between them a lot I don't think it's worth it. I would pick one and boost it with Technomancy of your choice (I buffed the electric weapon and shield)

These reviews and the one from the RPG Codex sold me on the game. I remember liking Mars: War Logs but somehow I quit halfway the game.

I appear to have two conflicting quests. One wants me to escort Master Connor out of the Underworks, while the other wants me to hunt down deserters within the Underworks. It says if I leave the deserters will get away, but if I try to use a door to another area of the Underworks, Zachariah will mention needing to follow Connor out. Am I just screwed out of the deserter quest?

I had to restart a save back so that I could make progress. It literally locked me out of finding Boris once I found Connor so I had to find a roundabout path to him that didn't take me through Connor.

How does this game compare to Bound By Flame? I found that one fun enough to play through during the PS4's early RPG drought, but the story was laughably god-awful in that one...like literally I laughed aloud at how bad some of the story events were, writing and performance wise. Anyway, I saw some potential in the game's mechanics but the story and some design decisions were poor. Is this one an improvement from that game, particularly in the narrative department?

I don't know if when compared to bound by flame whether it's better or worse, but it's a fairly solid game imho. The story of the technomancers and side characters are fairly good. The main story itself is serviceable, but everything about the world and characters holds it up. Voice acting is all over the place with most of the time it being decent, but the lead and the occasional side npc sometimes deliver some hilariously phoned in lines.

I caved and bought the game yesterday. So far, I'm really glad I did cause it's really got me hooked. Just played it for 13 hours straight. It's definitely got some jankiness to it and the voice acting does have its weak moments (though, a lot of the time, I actually find those kind of endearing/charming) but the world and characters are really interesting.

I did encounter a bug with one of the sidequests, though. There was that one in Ophir's slums where a merchant asks you to escort you and you have to wait for several hours, then go back to him and try to trigger the dialogue with him the very second the countdown is over. However, I saved shortly beforehand and tried it a couple of times and, no matter how I timed it, the mission always failed when I tried to start the dialogue even if the merchant had already started thanking me for showing up.

I also had to set the difficulty to easy pretty soon after starting the game because normal was just too hard for me LOL. I actually think easy is a bit too easy, though, I'd prefer a difficulty setting that's between easy and normal. The back-and-forth tracking can also get a bit tedious at times so I can definitely understand some people wishing for a fast travel feature. Still, though, all in all I'm really enjoying the game so far. It almost feels like a mix of the Mass Effect games (mostly because of the sci-fi setting, though, of course, it is different to Mass Effect's setting, what with it all taking place on one planet, etc.) and Dragon Age: Inquisition (the gameplay feels a bit similar, though there's less filler content and most of the side-quests in general have so far felt more interesting and narrative-driven). If that sounds like something you'd enjoy or if you're a fan of deep, interesting worlds and interactive narratives (and don't mind games that don't have AAA budgets), I definitely recommend it.

EDIT: While the game's character creator isn't that complex, I think it could still be fun to post screens of our different Zachs. Here's mine:

Man, save a lot, because this game is tough.

I play on normall and some early ancounters were very tough, had to retry some 5 times more

but by the end of chapter 1 I was a god and I disposed whole groups with 1 spell, and it just keeps getting easier
playing as full technomancer caster with staff. I feel it's really too easy now.

It is miles better than Bound by Flame. The story is pretty good though badly implemented in places and the voice acting is pretty solid all round. I couldn't even finish BBF I hated it so much.

Is it fair to say that the initial portion if the game is a slog to get through, but once you've put in 5-10 hours, the game begins to open up more and becomes far more interesting once your character has developed and become stronger?

i would say so. Once you get past chapter one which is a slog and you get more companions and gear it gets better.

Honestly the biggest slog for me is whenever you have to backtrack to the first town. Mainly because you can't avoid running through all of these areas with all of these enemies that respawn fairly often. I'm close to finishing though so this feeling of "I gotta get done with this" hasn't kicked in quite yet. Game was well worth the 60 for me but I'm sure for others once it's 50 or 40 it'll be a better deal

Yea, the endless respawning enemies in Ophir are annoying. I see what some of the reviews were saying about that but still overall and enjoyable experience so far.

Though gear still doesn't seem to be that great aren't found anything really good yet or even marginally better than what I've got.

I stuck around with technomancer gear and it looks so boss. Combined with the other technomancer tree upgrades my electric storm thing absolutely wrecks and I get liquid fairly fast

Yea, I think I'll just do that.

And after about 20 hours of playing I've just realized there's a flashlight in the game lol, would've been nice if they told us.

I'm really enjoying this title. The combat is very satisfying, I like the visuals, and the overall vibe is very cool. I'm glad I said 'fuck you' to the professional reviews.

Well reviews werent complete bullshit. They talked about the backtracking and the difficulty issues here and there.

Fact of the matter is that regular baddies hit you way too hard considering how many of them there are at a time.

That's cool. When I run into this problem I'll turn down the difficulty.

Finally beat it.

One of my last final missions was fucking "HEY BRO GO BACK TO OPHIR" and I just said fuck it, ignored.

The game relied too much on taking you back there for any number of bullshit reasons because it was the city they spent the most time in. With no fast travel system this became a chore. A big chore.

Battles could get annoyingly hard at points if people circled and trapped you and you couldn't dodge away. More often than not I won but nothing like an enemy starting an animation and no form of attack of yours can cut it so they suckerpunch you and boom you're dead.

Having given the negatives though, I loved my time with the game. It isn't perfect by any means, but I'd give it a solid 7/10. 20-30 hours of gameplay was more than enough.

Started as a rogue on hard difficulty and just finished chapter 1. Combat feels rather good and (so far) no complaints about difficulty issues. It feels a lot like The Witcher 2, rolling all over the place and getting some attacks in in between.

Quests and side-quests are surprisingly good and really help to flesh out the world and characters. Can't wait to dive back in tomorrow.
