Away sounds cool. I can't wait to see what it looks like -- having designs by Oshima has had me intrigued from the start. Also, I like the idea of the dungeons shifting around you. I can't offhand think of an RPG where that's been done.

Loudninja: others have already said it, but it bears repeating... you *really* need to play Quintet's stuff before you call anything a rip off of Dark Cloud. :p

Sorry about that :p

That actually sounds pretty fun sp0rsk.

I am finding it amusing that developers have apparently run out of ways to capitalize on the training idea without just rehashing math puzzles, so they've come back to inserting actual gameplay. And now instead of calling it "high scores", they're grading your skills. Isn't that what high scores were anyway?

I wonder if one day a developer is going to just make a classic arcade game and put "training" on the end of the title and realize the irony only after the product is out.
games -> non-games -> games

you just blew my fucking mind

Some important stuff, just glancing at it.

You have to unequip your shit before converting your save, because of possible attributes and skill changes.

You can't cross over your downloaded quests and gallery from 2nd. You can everything else I think. Item box expanded to 800 slots?

Ummm, .....Earthbound :D

Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario Allstars, Super Metroid.
Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Secret of Mana.
ActRaiser, Super Street Fighter 2, Mario RPG, Zelda: LTTP.
Chrono Trigger, Spike McFang, EVO, Kirby Superstar.
Star Fox, Super Mario Kart, Super Smash TV, Illusion of Gaia.
Soulblazer, Uniracers, Earthworm Jim, Super Castlevania IV.
Contra III, Tetris Attack, Lufia 2, Terranigma.
Megaman X, Super Turrican, Secret of Evermore, Super Ghouls N Ghosts.
Metal Warriors, DKC, DKC2, Sparkster.
The Lost Vikings, Blackthorne, Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia.
Turtles IV, Kirby's Avalanche, Mario & Wario, Sim City SNES.
Breath of Fire 2, Knights of the Round, Captain Commando, Aerobiz Supersonic.
Pilotwings, F-Zero, SimEarth, Ogre Battle.

You don't need to play them in any particular order.

An American SNES can play Japanese SFC games (Mario and Wario, Seiken Densetsu 3, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia) through a game genie or by modding the inside. The mod does not take any electronics experience; look inside the cart slot, and cut the square plastic "tabs" in the two back corners of the cart slot entirely off. Use a sharp knife. Terranigma is the only Euro-only game listed there; let me know when you get to it and I'll send you a guide to do it.

Don't post on GAF again until you're done the whole list. This is to be considered a start and not anywhere near all the titles you MUST play.

Wow, I did not play most of those!

How dedicated are Shiren fans? I know that it has a reasonable enough following - even a cult followship over here in the West who will hopefully all buy the DS version - but will they buy a Wii to play the third game in the series? Maybe some will have already have bought it for Chocobo Mysterious Dungeon coming out now, but I am afraid that the lack of other dungeon, sim, and RPGs currently on the system (besides Opoona, maybe), and the lack of releases between the two releases (and after) looks bleak... well, except for FFCC:Boy King at the end of spring, maybe, and possibly Fragile. And for the rest of the year... the Vanillaware game and King Story.

The Wii needs momentum if it wants to carve a niche for quirky RPGs and for Japanese-style roguelikes and sims - funny considering that the controller is perfect for both sim games and for menu navigation, and a perfect place for lower-budget 2d games.

What did they have to say about Final Fantasy IV? :D I've been really looking forward to this game.

By the way, AWAY seems fairly interesting; need to see more info. Enough of that, though, what about Cry On? It's like Mistwalker forgot about it. But how could they? I thought I remember hearing something about it being 50% complete. They need to cast more light on this little fella.

Shiren DS sold 200k.
Shiren 2 (N64) sold 285k--#24 best-selling game.

It's definitely the best-selling non-licenced Roguelike series.

it's not like the game doesn't sell enough to justify it!

Hey, man, I hear you. I'd buy MH in a heartbeat if they added infrastructure. I entertained the notion of going through Xlink Kai to play MH2 online, but I don't want to buy a wifi card just for it.

3. All completed quest information, the state of your Airuu Kitchen and your Farm, your insignias (?) and titles can be transferred. Also, the item box can now hold up to 800 items in its beginning state.
4. Part of the gallery, and some downloaded quests from Monster Hunter 2nd cannot be transferred.
5. You will be able to take your character and start a new game on 2ndG. You will be able to change your sex, name and appearance, and all items with a rarity of 1-3 will be transferred to your new game. All items above rarity 4 will be turned into money and a part of the money will be given to you at the start of the game.

- I haven't played MH in English so some of the translations might not match up.

It's an awesome 2D platformer where you play as a little girl with a pink backpack who uses a rubbery fishing line (with great physics) to swing from platforms and capture enemies. It's got multiple paths through levels and multiple paths through the game thanks to multiple exits, and it's got a hardcore following with people who record replays and go for speed runs and do crazy stunts. The series has been on SFC and PS1 so far.

How would I search YouTube to see videos of this? "umihara" or "kawase" or is there another name I should be aware of?

Edit: perfect stealth edit, thanks

Nice to see some interesting stuff on there. That Ohshima and Sakaguchi project looks swell, I hope it turns out--

Ever played worms? You know the ninja-rope weapon and how fucking fun it is to use? Picture a platformer where you play as a japanese girl and the main mechanic is that except it's a fishing line instead of a ninja rope.

Away, Patapon, Shiren, Petit.

Do want in that order.

Maybe this is a chance for some people to see that Mario Galaxy is not ubercasual and maybe become interested enough in picking it up?

I think the hardcore should know enough about SMG and 3D Mario series in general to decide on a purchase or not already.

Yeah it looks fun. I don't quite get how you control the direction of the fishing line independent from the girl (or if you even do) and it looks a lot more rigid than the ninja rope in worms but yeah seems cool go psp woo

You can aim it with the D-pad, or you can hold the shoulder buttons to aim it diagonally (just up-left/up-right on SFC, and down-left/down-right on PS1).

If you're talking about Japan, then no, even some hardcore there don't know enough that SMG is actually a hardcore traditional Mario instead of a party game like Mario Party.

Shiren DS sold 200k.
Shiren 2 (N64) sold 285k--#24 best-selling game.

It's definitely the best-selling non-licenced Roguelike series.

I hope that Shiren 3 will sell well - but the demographics might not be that good for it. On the other hand, together with Chocobo the Wii is not that expensive an investment.

According to Vinnk's Village reports, he said had met Japanese gameplayers who had avoided Mario Galaxy believing it to be too casual and easy to play. Either way, the game could use some more exposure over there.

AWAY (DS/AQInteractive/08-2-28)
* Tag-team effort between Sakaguchi and Oshima.
* An ARPG stretching over both screens where the objective is to rescue the villagers on the bottom floor.
* Elements shuffle within screens, changing the landscape; you can't enter the shuffling side until a countdown completes.
* As you rescue citizens from the dungeon, the town starts to regrow; shops reopen to sell you equipment, and villager-based events occur.

FF4 Review
* Changes are on a massively different scale than the GBA port.
* 3dification makes it seem almost a different game.
* Lower-screen map is very easy to read.
* Upgrades in event direction are great.
* Variety introduced in upgrading characters through Decant Ability is really good
* New episodes added, but the main plot is about the same.
* Auto-Battle makes combat easy
* Change of viewpoint for boss battles increases the effect.
* "Portica"-raising minigames are also on there.
