I think that pointer controls was always a lost cause for the Wii U.
Some games will have them, but not enough people gave them a chance on the Wii for anyone to care.

Yep. Sad but true.
I can already see certain people in the Aliens thread saying "I'll only buy this on Wii U if I can have pointer controls". Give it up guys.
We don't want to become as annoying as those console owners who want the controllers to remain static - forever - and anything new is considered a gimmick.

I'm not that worried. As long as devs are putting local multiplayer modes in their games, then they will have to include Wiimote IR pointing.

I generally like the new controller better, only downside I see is that it makes the touchscreen less accessible. Button layout and ergonomics should be superior though.

Hmm.. it might be a sync spot, since syncing is going to work like the iphone's NFC-based "bump" function, where you bump your controller to the console itself to get them to sync to each other.

I'm liking the NFC square theory myself.

I just thought it might just be a plug for where they had to put in a screw. The other one is obviously a button, as it even shows up on the patent.
