Liked what i saw, but damn at the voice, sounded like a porno.

Considering the lead designer is Max Hardcore, you shouldn't be surprised.

It's clearly Lara's character arc for this game: more helpless/panicked at the start -> increasingly badass survivor later.

The only way for a weak woman character to become strong is through severe, relentless punishment.

In level 2 she gets gagged with latex and her head is slammed in a toilet seat repeatedly. It's really deep stuff.

Well that's what I was thinking as well...

They start out like that, and maybe that's why some of you didn't like the demo, but going further into the game I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing (at least a few crucial bits of) the transformation that made Lara the Lara we know.

It's not just that the voice acting was bad, it was also that it clearly never sounded like it was coming from the character in that space, but from someone stuck in a recording booth. Bad audio design I guess.

Yeah, it sounded like a commentary track.

YouTube!

Well there are some similarities to U2's opening sequence. It's just Lara receives the abdominal wound before staggering through the corridor while Drake wakes up bleeding. Both then proceed to got through a highly scripted sequence with the time running against them (collapsing tunnel replaces the falling train). Lots of oh god and heavy moaning ensue.

Is Dennis Hopper in the game?

I'm not much of a gamer, but after Uncharted 2, I can't believe how good looking and cinematic games are looking nowadays. My God, I dont know if its a cutscene or gameplay. And best of all, the camera looks ace.

I liked what they showed in the demo as someone who hasn't liked any of the previous Tomb Raider games. This had me interested and excited to play this.

The problem with the demo - I want to explore huge, beautiful levels, not mash buttons to God of War-like "cinematic" bullshit.

Hmm I just hope the Everything is not completely copy/pasted from Uncharted.
Fixed.

I miss superhero confident Lara. And why is everything a prequel now.

They're late to the Nolan North party.

This is not Tomb Raider, they could've made a new franchise and it would be fine.
I would buy that...

Drake's not even close to the bullshit on display. Or maybe it comes off worse here because the voice actress is impressively inept.

I'll say this now, when Lara starts shooting up a ton of brown people from behind cover, then you can say its ripped off Unchartered. The whole death defying leaps from shit exploding/ falling apart was done in the original Tomb Raiders and again in Legend before there was any Uncharted. Drake and company certainly raised the cinematic aspect of it, but this is an old hat for Tomb Raider. This is getting to be like that guy who believes Warhammer is ripping off Gears.

Lara, being female, gives it a sexual tone that Nathan doesn't. But I'm not sure I'd chalk it up to the talent difference between voice actors yet.

I don't mind the grunts and moans...it's that her voice sounds like an American poorly faking a British accent. And it sounds like she's "acting".

Maybe it'll grow on me, or maybe I haven't heard enough yet, or maybe my ears aren't working.

All the bad guys in UC2 were white.

Not even close. She seemed to be talking to herself 10x more during gameplay. Combined with bad acting and bad soundbooth-style voice recording, it really all sounded out of place.

I searched and didn't see this posted anywhere. But I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that Crystal Dynamics is not making a second Lara Croft game.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/crystal-dynamics-not-making-a-second-lara-croft-game-focus-is/

Last year, we spoke with Crystal Dynamics' global brand manager Karl Stewart, about the studio's new three team structure: the "pillar" team was hard at work on the new Tomb Raider reboot, one of the highlights of this year's E3; the experimental team was working on smaller games under the "Lara Croft" banner; and the brand team, which looks after the lucrative Tomb Raider brand and, ostensibly, oversees projects like the upcoming movie.

At that time, Stewart told us, "The experimental team is basically just looking at the IP going forward and how we can take Lara to new and exciting places." The first and, as it turns out likely the last, place they took her was last year's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, an excellent isometric downloadable co-op game. So is Crystal Dynamics still looking to take Lara to new and exciting places? Outside of the reboot, it sounds like the answer to that question is in the negative.

"We're not making a second one," Stewart told me.

"Not yet, or just not?" I asked.

"Oh no, we're not making a second Lara. For us, that Lara Croft was, in a way, it was sort of the furthest possible extension of that iteration of Lara. Once we finished Guardian of Light, obviously we knew we were making this version of Tomb Raider," Stewart told us, referring to the reboot they were showing off during our interview.

I would have loved to see these put on XBLA every few years, best coop game I played in a long long time. They definitely regret the online coop they put out.

So then the experimental team isn't working on anything then? Or maybe they just integrated with the reboot team..

Edit: yeah I see the Director has moved to Tomb Raider

I guess since they want to turn the series into Tombcharted : Lara's big Cinematic QTE adventures there will be no room for old Lara croft anymore and the Guardian of Light was part of that era.

They definitely had not taken that iteration of Lara Croft as far as it could have went. Hell I played through the campaign and all the DLC and that wasn't enough. They could have ran with that for a long time.

Jesus, they said multiple times, that the main gamedesign is an openworld, metroidvania game.
Old Tomb Raiders had more linear and spectacular parts too, so let's not get paranoid.

I think they're trying to sell the new Lara's image as the new "official" one.
And i think the team has been integrated (for now) in the main game's one, for obvious work force reasons, but that does not mean that, once the game is out, they won't split it up again and create another spin off as good as GoL.
Stay positive.

I don't want to live in a world where there won't be a sequel to Guardian of Light.

Do you want to carry that weight, Crystal Dynamics? Do you?

Alright, make a new Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver game and I'll forgive you.

They're going to be working on Tomb Raider for another year, so they probably aren't even thinking about the possibility of another GoL.

Both Drake and Lara moan and grunt about the same, the difference is just their gender. I'm sure there are some chicks out there that could put a porno track to Drake doing something. The fact is though it's easier for girls to sound sexual when they're grunting, just because girls tend to, or it's popularized that girls should for our egos, grunt/moan during sex.

And she chatters to herself as much as Drake seems to, or less, going by that sequence, so... huh?

I don't. This idea of going back to the beginning to instill more depth and a deft touch to her character is very welcoming. I can't understand how people who like 'super hero' Lara aren't on board with seeing her origin story as she transforms from who she was to gaining the self confidence that she's known for, except with a more grounded context that makes her more approachable for newcomers. Super Hero Lara was cheesy as heck and hard to take seriously.

Agreed on all points. Thats part of the reason why I'm so stoked about this game - whereas I've never been excited about a TR game before. I for one hope she never becomes the old Super Hero Lara - but just becomes a bit more hardened - yet still prone to injury, pain, and fear.

This was my biggest disappointment from E3. Let's take a Tomb Raider game and make it into something that has nothing even left from the franchise. I have "interactive cinematic experiences" Boo!

The story was never important in Tomb Raider games to me. It's always been about the action/platforming and they're getting rid of that. When did the game industry decide that it wanted to be Hollywood's little brother even more? Games are not movies! QTE do no a game make!

If I'd been stabbed in the side with a rusty spike, I'd be moaning and groaning too. Shit, I'd be screaming and growling. She's taking it in relative strive.

I also chatter to myself, so it doesn't bug me.

Thank fuck for headphones lol. I'd be embarrassed as hell if I was listening to this on my speakers.

I'm sorry, but Drake only does the occasional grunt when he's being shot or climbing or jumping. He mostly quips. Sure, you could make a porno track using copious amounts of cut paste from Drake's grunts. But as far as Lara is concerned, you could straight up rip the audio from youtube and put it on a porno video with no need for cutting or pasting anywhere.
