Ubisoft promise a Wii U exclusive Rayman Legends demo.

This has turned into such a disaster for Ubisoft now. Should have just spent the money and marketed the game for 2 releases.

I guess that's... something. But it's like ordering a big, fancy steak dinner, having it delayed for 7 hours, and the restaurant is just like, "oh yeah, sorry about that. Here's a tootsie-roll." And the steak is already prepared! They're just waiting for everyone else to show up...

bad example. typically nice restaurants wait to serve the whole party at the same time.

and, also, no one has paid for Rayman yet. so there's that.

I do agree that ALL employees should fight the practice of forced OT. Regardless of profession. Delaying the game, however, is not a hardship for the developers or gamers. The notion that Ubisoft owes it to the developers or gamers to release the game when it was first planned is just dumb.

delaying the game resulted in the backlash that resulted in a game demo to be created and tested, straining resources even more, on top of the normal work they have to do for the unfinished versions of the game. and all their work that was spent in the last couple of months was for nothing.

this isn't a new thing for ubisoft montpellier. they're a talented bunch, so they get put on a lot of projects despite having their own they should be allowed to finish. because of their talent, they get kicked around a lot.

no one cares that it's a 'business' decision. people are being empathetic.

At last, Eurogamer speaks up. Now journalists go the extra mile, call Yves Guillemot and ask him if that is how he values his customers. If the small sales increase he expects from this move is worth jeopardizing loyal fans relations.

I like Eurogamer as-is, but even I am impressed with how forthright they are there.

No one's saying it's the end of the world? And usually when stuff like this happens to other games they are at least better with PR and timing (like not delaying a game 3 weeks before it comes out without promise of new content), this is just laughably bad.

Better PR? They told us the truth. They acknowledged the game is in fact done. They apologized. They stated exactly why they're doing it, and then they had the nerve to offer us another exclusive demo. What's better PR than that? Lying through their teeth and giving you some easy-to-believe sob story about something going terribly wrong during development, thus necessitating the extra months to correct? I'm shocked at how honest they're being. Makes me respect them a little more. Especially on yet another day when another major development house gets shut down.

How strained exactly is this team? All we've heard from is one former employee who remained anonymous complaining about the situation. He hasn't said anything about how a new demo would strain anyone.

so... am I empathetic, to understand that Ubi wants to ship their new Rayman game to a higher installed base than a scant 3 million or so?

I get that the Wi U faithful are super pissed that there is nothing new to play, but.. I feel that the reaction to this is getting a bit berserk. Blame Nintendo at least as much as Ubi if you're gonna go down that road.

What about preorders?

But yeah, I shouldn't have said waiting for the "party" to be served--it's more like waiting for everyone else in the restaurant to be served.

from the sound of it, doing work on rayman legends was pretty hectic, given the amount of demos and events they prepared for. what isn't mentioned is that during this time, montpellier was also working on zombi u. that couldn't have helped much.

after a long period of intense working hours, they deserve a break, not to be put right back into the fire.

it's absolutely nintendo's fault for acting like they did with the wii u. i haven't seen a system launch and prelaunch this bungled and awful in a long long time. and of course, ubisoft has every right to move their game to a time they feel would be more beneficial. it still doesn't make the treatment of their people right.

i think ubisoft was always going to bring rayman legends to the other consoles (look at rayman raving rabbids). my suggestion was that they should have done it from the get-go. ubisoft management fucked up when they didn't start developing the game for three skus, preventing a situation like this in the first place.

Here's the thing UBI, your first demo made me want the game so I don't need another. How about you find a way to make sure no other titles release in Sept. Do that, and I'll make sure to pick up Rayman day 1,like in the original plan. If I have options, i'll probably take em.

Exclusive demo did make me laugh tho.

Do you actually have any first-hand experience of game development? The implications of what you're saying is, like, a continent away from what was reality for me.

Different companies are different, perhaps, but this sure as hell all has the ring of truth to it.

Well that goes without saying. They're getting blamed for Capcom region locking MonHun Tri, may as well blame them for Ubi delaying Rayman too.

I'm probably going to sound a little selfish...but instead of a new "exclusive" demo I'd have walked away happily with confirmation/announcement of another game or port and called it even. It's a sad situation for those looking forward to Rayman like myself, and I'll still buy it come Sept or whenever, but they could've thrown us a bone...

I was still considering purchasing it to support the devs, but fuck that. Hold that shit Ubi. This is just a slap in the face. Not buying this game.

Sorry but Ubi originally planned to release it to a user base of ZERO on launch day and I was there at the UK wii u launch event and at least half the queue wanted rayman, no one is gonna give a flying shit comr september

Nintendo haven't done themselves any favours, to be honest. They needed a much more lucrative console and like you've said, haven't done a good job thus far. But that shouldn't excuse the bullshit treatment UbiMontpellier is currently receiving. They're probably going to be put to work at either porting ZombiU to PS360 or tasked with creating the sequel for the PS360WiiU soon enough.

I say it's high time UbiMontpellier & Ancel were liberated.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
At the end of this Demo do we get a surprise message from Rayman that says "Coming Soon for Wii U - Watch Dogs!"?

If not, this is still bullshit and a little insulting.

Software development(not games). Lots of it. Forced OT at some places, less so at others. As a developer you often feel put-upon, but it's your job to do what the execs plan for. If those plans change, you don't stamp your feet and cry like a child(actually you do, but you save it for your co-workers or wife). You either adapt or you leave if you can't handle the stress of it. I feel for anyone in a position like that where they're forced to ignore family/friends/life to get a product out. It's not fun.

I cant believe Ubisoft actually think this is a good idea.

I can. They wouldn't do it if they thought otherwise.

Is this worse then SEGA cancelling VF4 on Dreamcast and then throwing in a DVD with Shenmue II showing it in all its glory on PS2..

A userbase of zero that they probably assumed would grow much more quickly than it did.

Don't get me wrong, Ubi definitely handled this badly. But I can't blame them too much, especially if Nintendo simply didn't pay to lockup the exclusive. It's their game.

Do you really think that it's realistic to imagine that Ubisoft is purposefully fucking with their customers for laughs? Really?

The decision can't be malicious, though. Only colossal ineptitude would cause someone to delay this game into the next-gen and GTAV launch period. It's not evil, it's just beyond asinine.

Excellent point. Ubisoft also has the best selling third-party game on Wii U by a long shot, because it isn't a late port. Rayman was clearly wanted.

Smart business isn't treating your customers like shit.

When I first saw this I thought it HAD to be a joke. The only response that would've salvaged ANYTHING would've been to say "the Wii U version isn't QUITE ready but we hear you, and since it's nearly complete we'll work to get it out in March with the other platforms to follow in the fall".

A fucking demo. Unreal.

I feel sorry for people who wanted this game. This demo is like salt in the wounds, the exclusivity of it just makes it worse.

Anyone else think that Lego City Undercover potentially stands to benefit from this in a big way.

Or, perhaps hurt. If they still need polishing time, have ideas for a little more content... they may feel pressured to release it without that work as "good enough" because Nintendo is desperate to have something, anything new to play on the system.

For the same reason, I worry for Pikmin 3. Rayman Legends is d-o-n-e, done. While LCU and P3 are still in development.

Just remember that you can't ever really know the reasons for a delay.

Remember when Wipeout HD was "finished", in the can, ready to go, until it apparently failed an epilepsy test? I'm not even sure if that is apocryphal or not. Point is, unforeseen software delays happen.

This outrage isn't about the specific delay of this specific game. It's about the combination of Nintendo hardcore fans, a slew of bad press about the Wii U, and a launch drought, combining to form a potent ire that is resulting in slaying every messenger that arrives to the gate.

Damm pretty much every post on Ubisoft's fb page contains people seething at the initial decision and the exclusive demo, Ubisoft is deleting comments as well but their coming in faster than they are being deleted.

Nah Pikmin 3 has been in development for sooo long now,

Nice narrative, it manages to trivialize peoples frustration, work in the often conjured rabbid nintendo fanbase and completely ignores the facts.

"There are no issues with the game development. All of the information was in the press release, the only reason for the delay is to release on multiple platforms," Ubisoft public relations specialist Sarah Irvin said.

Its been hilarious seeing people apologizing for this obvious anti-consumer choice in this thread, Ubisoft should hire the lot of you.

Ubi dev 1:"Yay! the game is over now we can go have more time with our families!"

Ubi executive:"Not so fast guys! we just announced the 360/PS3 versions!"

Ubi dev 2:"Right...but...the Wii U version is finished so other team can..."

Ubi executive:"Yeah....no, Wii U is delayed to september so you can polish the game even more alongside doing the ports!"

Ubi dev 3:"The fuck with that! I barely saw my wife in all those months!

Ubi executive 2:"You're wife is doing good! trust me! HAHAHA"

Ubi dev 3:"FUCK YOU!""

Ubi executive:"Now now...so rude, I think you and your companions need some extra work to learn some manners so....now you also have to do another Wii U demo"

Ubi devs:"NOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Ubi executive 2:"What are we gonna do with that demo?"

Ubi executive:"Exclusive demo for compensation to Wii U users"

Ubi executive 2:"That's brilliant!"

Ubi executive 1:"I know! HAHAHHAHAHAHA"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD THIS IS SO F*ING HILLAROUS!

Hey, Ubisoft! You can take your "new exclusive demo" and shove it up your ass.

You honestly think this is gonna appease ANY of the fans that were counting the days for this game? Hell no! You're gonna have to deal with this negative feedback for weeks and months to come until you release the game. If people keep up this uproar, they may have no choice but to release the game or explain to their investors why they are seeing nothing but negative comments.

NO GAME, NO PEACE! NO GAME, NO PEACE! NO WOMAN, NO CRY! (Whoops! Messed up there.) XP
