Finished this earlier this week, couldn't believe I put 64 hours into it! it was the gameplay that kept me going for sure and after playing the VC3 demo I really hope Sega brings it over seems much more serious and closer to the game and it looks great, Bring it Sega!

I've just reached September today, and I'm totally not surprised that things came out just like I thought.
On the other hand, i'm surprised that I'm over 100 hours in and still not done, with a mission to farm in July, 2 missions to finish in August (plus the farming of those missions) and all the missions from the months left to do and farm (let's not talk about the extra missions). I wonder when I'll be able to play KH:BbS at this rate.

I have no idea how you all are leveling your characters up. My highest class is tech at 26 and I have over 80hrs played in September.

I tried the first VC and while I enjoyed it I ultimately returned it due to a lack of a free time. Now I have a long train trip today (and finally some time off) and I enjoyed the demo a lot so I figure it might be a good time to give the series a second try.

I was wondering how long does an average mission last?
How hard is the learning curve?
How annoying are the characters, I recall reading that a lot of people felt that compared to the first VC they were weaker and more grating than the previous games characters.

Kind of a related unrelated question. How long does it take to download the game at say a place with free Wi-Fi like Borders or Amatrak waiting area when doing it directly to the PSP (instead of via Media Go as I think I left my USB at home)? I'm thinking I'll have about 40 minutes before I'll have to leave the Wi-fi enabled area.

TIA

In regard to your questions, the missions can last from a couple minutes to 10/15 depending on how good you are and how hard/long the mission is.

The learning curve isn't hard, most things are explained quite well in game and for those missions that are harder, you can just restart them after getting a feeling from the general positions of the enemies.

The characters... some are annoying, some are not. They are really predictable as predictable is the story though, which still didn't ruin the game for me.
Then again, as Duckroll said, I got Stockholm Syndrome, so I even sort of like Avan now. He's a first grade idiot but not as unlikable as he was at first for me.

I have no idea about the cadet guide, I downloaded it but I never even looked at it.

i'm almost done with the game
december

gameplay is good, but more on the easy side. story could've been much better if they took the war theme more serious. i feel like i'm guiding a bunch a teens through a theme park at times.

Should I still get this game, if the story sections and characters repel me?

The gameplay from the demo was just like VP1 though, which I loved.

I would say so. The gameplay, even with the few problems it had, was still fun enough to pull me through the story.

yes, i think the gameplay is worth it. there are some funny sections in the story too, but it's not a serious war theme.

Just wanted to throw in my 2cents. The gameplay really fits the portable aspect of the game. I'm looking forward to VC3 taking the same gameplay style and adapting it to a more gritty war story.

JUST picked up a copy of the VC2 artbook. It costed a pretty penny, but it's worth it. They had STACKS of it at Kinokuniya. OMG.

I suppose if Udon localizes this one, I will pick it up too...

I still have to pick up my copy of that artbook. I wanted to get it together with a Soejima's artbook, but it was too much. Maybe next month ><

In the mean time, I finally got
Aliasse!
Man, I love this character. It's like for characters like Vario, Noel, Marion etc. etc. the phrases they say while you use them are just cool (or in Vario's case, funny sounding)

Yeah, the cast overall is good in VC2. It is just that the choice for lead is questionable.

The game would have been 100% better had the lead character been someone like Coleen, Zeri, Marion,
Aliasse
(basically anybody but the current lead).

I got the game and I'm loving it so far. I think the above comment sums up some of my reservations. Granted the finding out ones family member is dead and using only two or three art stills or one for the person telling it kind of hurts too.

Still I love how easy to control and assessable it is on the handheld. I also grabbed the DLC too. Thanks for the recs. I'll post my impressions as I play (if anyone is interested).

Got the game 5 working days (if you count saturday) after being dispatched by Zavvi. It's kinda rare those days. They took they time to send it though.
I think it'll be my next game after Yggdra Union :D

i though i was gonna fail that mission too, but then i took the vehicle and went all kamikaze past all the soldiers. after that, you pretty much learn to deal with V2. there is a lone powering vehicle you can easily access too, if you want to weaken the V2.

after VC1, i don't think they can escape doing that for every episode now :lol

I just did August tonight, and it's worse. Jesus Christ I nearly threw my PSP in frustration! >.<

At least in Ep. 7 of VC1, if I was going to throw anything it wouldn't break the system, just the controller! :lol

i didn't know VC2 could be frustrating. i'm past the main storyline right now and the only "feature" that might piss me off is when lots of throwaway soldiers keep respawning.

I may be a hardcore gamer, but that doesn't make me a skilled one. :lol

Christ, I finally got past the April battle this weekend and sunk some hours into May.

I seriously love this game, except for:

1. Endless fucking tutorials
2. Loading (loading is not too long necessarily, just happens too often)

I still am just awestruck at how long the game is though. I bought this game in February 2010 (AFAIK), and although I took some big breaks, I've been playing it. And I'm only in May. Good lord.

I wanted to finish the game before the annual GAF top 10 lists, but it seems impossible.

I'm seriously considering getting this for $15.

However, my biggest problem with the first game was not having enough information about each mission before starting it. I would have to do a dry test run first as a sort of recon, then reload a carefully-placed double save to come back with the proper team.

Did this game do anything to alleviate that or make any UI improvements?

From what I remember the briefings were more detailed in the type of opposition you faced (like they would state mortar squad or the such). There was also an info tab that gave the breakdown of the type of units you could expect to face.

Can I just skip all the cut scenes and dialogue in this game? I never do that the first time through any title, but goddamn this is some terrible writing. It's all the faults of translated anime writing x100.

The first game's cast was bearable and text didn't get in the way as much. This here is trying to put me through a wannabe Persona 3 but with characters nowhere near as likable. Will I miss anything by ignoring this shit and just skipping to the game, which is actually pretty good?

You won't miss a thing as the story goes no where and is too disjointed even if it did. Just hit start during any story sequence and you'll skip it.

Bought the game on the Xmas offer plus DLC.

I'm absolutely blown away by how much content is in this, a small shame the actual battlefield is limited in comparison to it's PS3 bretherin which is to be expected but stuff like changing classes, knowing what you're going to face before a battle begins, retreating costing no CP if you're near a base to promote camp defending, plus modding your vehicle so it can carry other units I'm immensly impressed yet at the same time saddened that I'm not going to see a home console variation of this for some time if ever.

Question: Because it's already on the mem stick is it worth me installing the game, or is that a waste of space?

So I bought this game with sale going on. Really enjoying it surprisingly, I thought the school setting would suck. But it works. I like how you can flesh out your whole squad. Very Fire Emblem-esque, even more so than the first game.

The only problem I have with it is the stupid credits system. I hope VCIII doesn't have this.

I installed it. Even faster load times.

Took ages, but damn good game. One of the best on PSP. Good length, heaps of content, decent enough presentation of the story, straight to the point (I love that, I hate when games are too damn big running around areas that could just be a menu!)

Holy crap, Augusts story mission in insane I don't know how I could have done it without the overpowered lancer and machine gun I got from one of the DLC missions I bought. o_O

Is there an efficient way to get certificates and Diplomas only upto September but my Lancers, Engineers and Armour techs are really lagging behind in terms of class upgrading.

Aliasse is in the game with Valkyria mode like Riela, probably the will let us play with Selvaria too, with Valkyria mode or without, that has to be seen.

People complaining about certificates don't know how paintful is to get the medals for 100% R&D development, that's true grinding.

This man speak the truth...

I have mostly no problems with medals. But R&D is a true pain, a stupid, retarded system.

Materials can be OK if you understand how level4 materials are distributed (depend only on the location of the 3-star mission, so you know quickly that to gain wod, you go to forest, etc.) But doing 8 times each a whole lot of dumb missions just to get the 8 pieces you need to advance in the development tree ?

Grr...

The "10 million ducats" requirement is also quite cheap, even if I guess I'll get them by grinding for the weapon pieces.

The whole game is doable with A-ranks
- without grinding (no mission done twice)
- without any dropped weapons (you won't get one anyway if you don't do a mission twice)
- without any DLC

But sometimes, it require quite special planning. Which one in august? The story mission in academy? IIRC, flame thrower on the light armored vehicle did wonders for me in this one.

Try to make them as one of the two top people in missions (you can check points during missions). Capturing enemy camps is useful (5pts IIRC). Don't forget that Engineers have a good gun, often better than scout.

Don't use too many characters, also. You'll finish getting certificates and credits for those you use naturally.

I'd say that you only need one Elite in healing engineers, preferabily Cosette (for powerful healing), but if you get it in december, it's far enough. One Elite lancer is also useful (just kill tanks in autumn, you'll get what you need). You can do without elite armored techs, even if they ARE usefull and powerful. Best one is Avan, I'd say, but only after some unlocking some special attributes.

Does the character unlocks (codes from the OP) would unbalance the game early on?

[edit] This game needs a hard difficulty, do I have to finish the game to unlock it?

Super late to the party here, and probably an annoying question...

Does anyone have a save with all the stickers / characters unlocked? I'm finally about to start fresh and I don't want to spend half a day entering codes into a PSP.

You cannot transfer stickers/character unlocked by codes between PSPs, even if they have the same profile. Once you transfer a save, you will receive a message about the time being different (even if you use the same card between two PSPs with the same User Profile) and that everything is being re-locked.

At least, that was my experience trying to use the same save file between two PSP systems.
