Warhammer 40,000 |OT| In the Grim Darkness of the Community Forum There Is Only War

Just picked a land raider! Looking forward to fielding it. A question on the index entry though. It says 'a land raider is a single model equipped with a twin heavy bolter and two twin Lascannons'.
Then the wargear options below show that it 'may take' a hunter-killer missile, storm bolter and multi-melta. Does this mean that it can have all these weapons (I.e. 5 different weapons) or do some of them replace others?
It can have all of them. I was actually just looking at one the other day...didn't think much of them before, but damn...they are kind of beefy.

Land Raider's have got a massive buff this edition between the improved twin-linked rules, being able to split fire and move & fire without penalty. Land Raider Crusader's are still king though, especially now Lascannon Land Raider's are almost 100 pts more expensive than them.

How come they're so good? I inadvertently bought the crusader / redeemer variant and I don't know which one I should build (having never used any of them).

Higher troop capacity (16 normal marines or 8 terminators) but the Crusader in particular shines this edition because of it's huge volume of anti-infantry fire. Marines have plenty of anti-tank options but they struggle against hordes this edition, 40 shots a turn at rapid fire range from the Crusader really helps deal with that.

Good points. Crusader it is!!

So my Death Guard army is basicly the Dark Imperium box with an extra set of Death Guard from another box set.

What is a decent thing to add from here? Tanks? Transports? Wait for the DG book and see if anything new is amazing?

Wait for the Death Guard book to drop. There are new units coming for sure.

Fair enough. Better on my pocket book to wait too. Though I am going to pick one one of the 3 death guard box so I can use a Blight Launcher.

Hand primed all 14 of my Plague Marines last night. First time ever painting assembly line. Color 1 goes on tonight.

14 in one night was actually easier than I thought. hand priming takes a pretty frigging long time. First couple colors will take a big cause of how much coverage I need, but after that the process should speed up. Trying to give this a good couple hours a day average and see if I can actually get a full army painted.

Give me your hobby strength GAF.

Shame GW doesn't make a Rakarth Flesh spray. I'm doing the Weeping Legion vectorum for my Plague Marines and not only do I need Rakarth Flesh as a base for the armor, I also need it for the horns, teeth, flesh, and Nurglings. Light gray is working just fine in the meantime though.

I think it's gonna be a couple of weeks until I can get a game in, but I'll report back!

And yes indeedy
That is damn nice! Sounds like a lot of people are in the middle of painting right now. Hopefully we can get some pictures from everyone. Love to see everyone's work.

I am nearly complete painting my Imperial Knight skeleton. Then the plates....

That feel when you stop by your local gaming establishment on your lunch break and buy some paints and a brush that could have waited but completely forget about the one color you really needed right away.

The One Color. You always go to buy it. You never come home with it. The 5th Chaos God.

So, this is happening. Game Workshop being sued.

The latest chapter in the house of Games Workshops’ legal troubles is here, as they are being sued for $62.5 million dollars amid 6 criminal complaints.

Game store owner, and legal counsel David Moore has filed a criminal complaint in the US Federal Court of Southern Florida alleging six criminal violations of US law and is seeking $62.5 million in equitable relief from Games Workshop.

Moore alleges violations of the U.S. Law and RICO under 18 & 15 U.S. CODE, including but not limited to Fraud, Price Fixing, Tortious Interference, Breach of Contract, Unjust Enrichment, Restraint of Trade, Conspiracy and Antitrust Violations.

Can't comment on the business side of things and how accurate that is, but a lot of his complaints are uttery absurd. The whole thing is just extremely poorly and unprofessionally written as well, and it seems like he's just trying to find anything he can no matter how valid it is.

He claims GW are IP thieves because they used non-copyrighted themes and concepts from other property, and thinks they need to pay for the use of ideas like the vague concept of "space marines". He basically says "They stole Battletech, then stole "Space Marines" from Starship Troopers, then later on stole Xenomorphs from H.R. Gieger!" (the original Genestealers are "Identical to Geiger/Fox's images and vision" according to him) and uses the exact words "stolen game" later on to describe W40K. He even claims that gamesworkshop stole WHF as a "110% Ripoff" of Tolkien because they both have things like Dwarves and Orcs, regardless of those things being a mainstay of fantasy settings and made popular because of Tolkien. Not to mention other settings like D&D had those things before WHF even existed. He even says they stole the word "Eldar" from Tolkien. After all that he says they copied "exact sculpts" of Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf, Mummy from universal (no idea how valid that is, though).

It seems he doesn't understand the difference between parody or being inspired by something that isn't copyrighted/is just general non-unique concept and outright IP theft. He seriously believes that GW are thieves because "they never legally paid for" the things they were inspired by when making their own setting, despite them being entirely different other than the basic concept. You don't need to pay to use basic concepts and non-copyright/trademarked things like Dwarves, Orcs, Elves, power-armour, lasers and dropships but he seems to think you do.

Some of his business complaints might be valid but i don't really understand them all. When he's using words like "scam" "criminals in England" "stolen game" and all sorts of absolutely stupid and petty things it comes across as either has has no idea what he's talking about, or it's a troll thing. How can he say this and seriously believe it?

In America we have a Free Enterprise & Free Market system of law .... different than the socialist-base of Europe.

Also seems to be some sort of strange double standard going on here, as if GW are the only company to borrow ideas from popular sci-fi and literature, or as if GW are the only model/miniature company to charge many, many times the cost to produce. Tamiya or Dragon or Airfix or whatever don't use materials that cost them anywhere near the product price, either...but his complaint is made even more silly considering he used something that was a commemorative limited-edition miniature for an anniversary, anyway. It's as if he thinks thigns like the moulds, design, transport, customs etc don't factor into prices, either.

He even wants GW to loose all their IP, trademarks and copyrights. The entire thing just seems like a joke but i expect he's serious, unfortunately.

Does he want the money for himself? Hes certainly not arguing on behalf of Fox/Tolkien/whoever owns Starship troopers, despite using their brands as his case lol.

This is the part that really confuses me. Dude has 0 relation to ANY of those he claims has had shit stolen from them, but wants compensation for himself. Like...what? Next time Dane Cook steals someone's jokes, I'll be sure to sue on their behalf and get myself some money.

Even if he did have a relation to those claims, i doubt he has any ground to stand on here. They are not copyrighted/trademarked things that are owned and are unique to those IPs he mentions, they're general ideas and vague concepts that became staples of a variety of both sci-fi and fantasy settings.

Case will be thrown out - he has no standing at all, and no way of showing damages caused to him by these so called IP thefts.

It seems he (and I've seen mentions eleswhere of others thinking the same) believes that because only Games Workshop can make products for their IP....that's somehow a monopoly and that's bad/illegal? I saw someone say basically "Games workshop are bad because they don't let others make models for their IP, they just want all the money for themselves! They should let anyone use it but they won't because then they'd have to lower their prices! Not allowing competition is bad and unethical, they've created a monopoly!". Am i missing something here? Isn't what GW does the exact same as pretty much every other company? I certainly can't think of any wargaming/miniature/scale model companys or IPs that let you just make and sell whatever you want for their product line. Y

There was that case of a 3rd party making models for things that had rules but no models. IIRC GW lost it since they had nothing that could've been copied in the first place.

Oh great, so there is a general thread for the best sci-fi-fantasy universe on GAF!

Was wondering why I had never looked it up before.

Also, would like some suggestions on novels for Warhammer 40K, have most of the Ciaphas Cain series and Gaunt's Ghost series (gonna get the rest of the books and complete those), the Eisenhorn Omnibus (still not read but plan to) but looking for other suggested books that people would recommend as good?
Preferably Imperial focused but dirty xenos' can be fun to read about too.
No Chaos allowed however, fuck those traitors.

Anything by Dan Abnett or Aaron Dembski-Bowden should be a good read. Brothers of the Snake by Abnett is probably my favourite marine novel in 40k. Chris Wraight has also put out some great stuff.

Will look them up then! Usually not so much into the Marines as most of them as overpowered Smurfs but been interested in at least some of the factions (Salamanders, Black Templars and the Wolves).

Hellsreach by ADB is about Black Templars on Armageddon. Pretty good stuff.

Some notes on audiobooks because sometimes people ask about Black Library stuff.

Have listened to in the past couple months-
Master of Mankind
Talon of Horus
A Thousand Sons
The Crimson King
The First Heretic
Betrayer

- currently listening to Black Legion.

All of these are good. I would recommend them to anyone who wants good stuff in this universe.

A Thousand Sons and The Crimson King are amazing. Thousand Sons are super well represented and you get awesome as hell battles, and interesting lore.

My favorite books are most likely The First Heretic and Betrayer. The Word Bearers are the real MVP, and Angron + Kharn are also amazing.

Master of Mankind is an awesome look at stuff rarely seen. It moves a bit slower, but has some epic shit going on, and if you can get your brain around the webway it has stupid huge battles in it.

ADB's current chaos books The Talon of Horus and now Black Legion are also really cool. ADB I think writes the best warp stuff. He kinda describes things like old chaos art where things look like a fucking muppet technicolor nightmare. While doing that though he is building characters who are absolutely Chaos, but totally seem like the smart ones in all of this. (Black Legion has an explanation of time in the warp and has some really cool scenes of Chaos Marines learning that the Empire is a nightmare.) The phrase "The Word Bearer's won!" is actually written. The first book, The Talon of Horus, has pretty great warp stuff, but the scale is a little smaller till the end. Totally great though and worth it for explanations of how the warp folk see the Emperors presence in the warp and stuff.

I hope you like Chaos. It really makes the best of these novels so far. I am waiting for that amazing Loyalist book. Know no Fear and Fear to Tread are up after the current book so we will see!

Hey thanks for the audibook info. I've been reading the HH books during my lunch breaks (on Legion now) and was thinking of switching to audio so I can get some walking in.

Really looking forward to the Calth books, I have the Betrayal at Calth (the game) boxset and plan to paint them up as Wordbearers and Ultramarines. I like Abnett's books a lot and hear good things about ADB.

Betrayer is a Calth book. Also The First Heretic leads up to it. Know no Fear is next for me and is also Calth. The First Heretic, Betrayer, then Know no Fear seems to be a good reading order. Though I think you can swap Know no Fear and Betrayer pretty easy. Not sure though. Both The First Heretic and Betrayer are amazing though.

Yeah I have the big flowchart that shows the order everything goes in. I had been reading in book # order, but am planning on skipping ahead a bit to get to the Calth stuff. Have you read "The Honored" or "The Unburdened"? Was probably going to read in this order (the ones marked '~' are maybes):

07 - Legion (own)
08 - Battle for the Abyss (own)
14 - The First Heretic (own)
19 - Know no Fear
Macragge's Honor (own)
~ Children of Sicarus (audio)
~ The Honored (ebook)
~ The Unburdened (ebook)
10 - Anthology Tales of Heresy (own)
24 - Betrayer
25 - Anthology The Mark of Calth
~ Perpetual (audio)

I understand "Battle for the Abyss" is pretty bad but I already own it (from the Humble Bundle), and flowchart shows it should be read before Know No Fear?

"Should" meaning that the ship gets mentioned afterwards. The book itself is completely inconsequential.

Forgot about that.

I remember it because of this exchange:

Magnus released an unnecessary breath, watching as a ship too vast to exist left the wound in the material universe. It easily eclipsed even the Gloriana-class flagships of the combined Legion fleet, and the warp's cloudy tendrils lashed at its spires, shrieking into the silence, seemingly reluctant to let the vessel back into reality.
‘You built two,' the sorcerer breathed.
‘Oh, no.' Lorgar didn't even open his eyes. He raised a hand to point into the void, where a second warp-slice ripped across the stars. ‘I built three.'
