Warner Bros Reboots 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Without Joss Whedon

But where is Joss Whedon? Atlas Entertainment is announcing today it is rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros Pictures. Atlas’ Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment Bros. Whit Anderson is writing the script after she approached Roven and others with an idea how to update Buffy. "While this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be,” an insider says.

Warner Bros Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. Whit Anderson is represented by CAA, Wirehouse Entertainment and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie & Stifflemen.

Spectacularly dumb. And at least part of the reason for this is because all the people who are going to hate this the most are the Buffy fans, who view Buffy and Whedon as inseparable. There is going to be nothing but ill will directed at this from the very people that make up the show's potential target audience. Talk about a mountain to climb...

I can only begin to imagine the meltdowns on Whedonesque and the various Buffy fan boards right about now. My heart goes out to the Buffy fans; they deserve better than this. And it's not like Buffy was just a good idea poorly executed; the Whedon version of Buffy was extremely good and beloved by legions of fans. Exactly what about this was crying out to be remade?

Kinda on topic but really not, did they ever establish when Buffy took place? Because the original came out in '92, but then the first episode of the the show in '98 seemed to imply that the events of the movie took place the previous year. So was was the whole thing set in the early 90s or did the original movie take place in the future?

The original movie happened the year before Buffy moved to Sunnydale. Ignore the time the movie was set, it happened in the Buffyverse in roughly 1997.

I heard the show was separate from the movie, basic ideas were taken but they are not a sequel to the movie. As afar as i knew it was all shot in present time

Yeah, this is pretty stupid.

The legions of Whedon devotees will never give this a chance without his involvement.

And those of us who don't care for Whedon and his work (myself included) won't be interested, either.

Vampire craze combined with the inevitable teen focus. This will probably come out about the time Twilight ends its run in the theaters. Teenage girls will be longing for some other vampire franchise, and Buffy will provide them with a strong-willed female lead. It should sell itself, even though it will inevitably suck. (literally no pun intended)

I'm not sure if a strong, independent woman would appeal to those fans. They could always rewrite her to be an emotionally-crippled codependent, though.

Didn't they do that with the latest Harry Potter? They shot this one and then the one that will be out next year back to back?

Well yeah, but that isn't a re-boot really. Just the second part of a sequel. Like they did for Kill Bill, The Matrix, and Back to the Future.

Oh great, they actually are gonna do this. Good luck. At the very least I hope they don't "Twilight" the vampires and that they have good action. Probably the hardest part will be character interaction. Hopefully.

Yea the comic supposedly was closer to the original concept that Whedon had for the movie.

Buffy without Whedon? It's gonna sucks pretty badly. Especially since they are going to use a brand new roster of characters/actors. You can't replace the chemistry of the old cast like that. FAIL

Indeed it was AMAZING. During the five seasons of the show they teased Angel role in the apocalypse through various prophecies and it ends with the apocalypse somewhat happening :lol .

Way to kill off any ticket sales it would possibly have. This would appeal to such a small niche of non-fans it would be ridiculous to see how this would even get greenlit. Bring me my damn Spike movie with Joss Whedon on the project.

Buffy: The Origin is a comic book retelling of the movie, but it stays closer to Whedon's original script (unlike the movie).

The overall main characters are there (Buffy, Lothos, Pike and Merrick), but events are changed (like Buffy burning down the gym, which didn't happen in the film).

The pilot for the TV show was written as a sequel to the original script (which the movie didn't use), which is why things don't line up right.

As for this movie, they can fuck off. Its not Buffy and it won't be Buffy. If Whedon isn't associated with it, its crap.

and then...

LA gets sent to a hell dimension. LA gets split up as demon mob bosses each take a slice. Angel becomes human, Wesley becomes Wolfram and Hart's ghostly liason, Gwenn, Nina, Kate Lockley and Connor become Team Angel. Comic was actually a pretty good "Season 8".
