Did you ignore the whole thread mister?

Just smile at people if you want them to smile, they either join our they don't.
Lol many years ago back when I was married I'd found out my wife had finally made the plunge and physically cheated on me. She'd cheated emotionally for years but finally, the night before, she'd told me she'd slept with someone else.Had someone tell me to smile on one of the worst days of my life.
Came very close to telling that person to fuck off, which is something I've never said to anyone.

To me its up there with honking at attractive women or wolf whistling at them. What is the absolute best possible outcome? Someone cracks a forced smile and calls you a twat under their breath? Ive seen people get a Glasgow kiss for less!
A head-butt.Does this mean a punch in the face?
Yeah fuck people being nice to me
I was kinda wondering where this happens because I have never seen this in my country. People will smile, nod, or say hi when passing a stranger, but telling someone to smile is some condescending shit. It's not being nice, it's being judgemental.I have seen it happen' countless of times when I am walking through Amsterdam. A good looking woman passes by and some idiotic stranger tells her to smile. This crap especially happens with Moroccans, Turkish and Greeks here in Amsterdam.
Yeah fuck actually reading what people are saying
I just had a guy at work yesterday telling me I should be smiling because it's Friday. The problem was that he was telling me this while we were in the restroom, side by side at the urinals (the restroom only has two urinals). It was so annoying because I have bathroom shyness - I have difficulties going when people are near me or talking to me... I won't smile just because you ask me to and I certainly won't do it in the bathroom...
Telling someone to smile isn't being nice to someone. Smiling at them is. If you want to see a person smile, smile at them. If they don't return the smile, move on and realize that other people don't exist to fulfill your whims.Yeah fuck people being nice to me

I've noticed throughout this thread that various people are disingenuously acting as if legitimate reasons are not being provided for why someone might not like being told to smile by a random stranger.

How is saying "Smile" supposed to make someone's day though? That's what I don't get.
If they actually smiled instead of issuing a command to smile they might have a better chance to brighten up someone's day.
It depends on what we consider malicious intent.Never said it was the best way - just that many people probably don't have malicious intent behind it.
I did have a good laugh yesterday on the bus when I spotted a sign saying "smile! you're beautiful"
I don't even get what that means.
So, you're beautiful already and you should smile? For more beauty deemed by someone, which seems pointless? Or you'll only be beautiful if you smile?
I don't know. I think it's a message assuming we're not smiling because we think we're ugly or something.
