CRAP!! I mean, we like each other. But her parents made it pretty clear to me in a private conversation that they would like me to be part of their family.

We're both in University at the moment and I'm still somewhat in debt. I know pretty well that if I do ask, she will say yes. But.... FUCK... help me out here!!!

If you guys are serious about marriage, talk about it beforehand to figure out the "how do we" and the "if we did..." type questions.

The last reason to get married is "because it feels like it's the next step up".

It's an awesome thing, but don't do it for the wrong reasons.

If you're going to do it, don't do it for the parents. Do it for you and your lady friend. NEVER propose to someone just because someone else tells you to, even if it is her family. You personally need to be ready to take the plunge.

It's not up to her parents, it's up to you. Good that you already have their consent, bad that they ask such a thing of you. Judging from your reaction (FUCK), I'd say marriage is probably the last thing you might be wanting at the moment.

Explain to them that although you love her, it's not financially feasible at the moment. Mention that you think it would be best for you both to finish school first. That should at least hold them at bay while you regroup and come up with a new strategy. :lol

Are you in a relationship with the girl's parents? Or the girl?

Live your life. Be in your relationship. If you want to marry her (eventually), it's nice to know the family likes you.

On the flip side: It's an awful feeling, being in a relationship with someone whose family doesn't really like you, whose friends keep getting into your other's head, trying to break you up. So be thankful you're not in that situation. Yes, it's absolutely shit-scary to be told "you're going out with our daughter. So, when is the big day?" but they're parents, and sometimes, parents say dumb, presumptuous things.

In life, saying dumb things is an equal opportunity sport. Don't let those dumb things ruin a good relationship. You'll regret it for the rest of your life.

Here's the thing. I love the good thingsa about her and can tolerate what i don't. The good outweighs the bad. I want to marry her but financially it's not a good time. Her parents have an obligation to support her but I would want us to sink or swim on our own.

I don't want to have money issues and then the relationship can turn sour. We cannot afford our own place at the moment. At the same time, I'm almost 29 and she is the best thing that ever happened to me.

You two been going out a few weeks or something? You make it seem like this just a spur of the moment thing. And the fact you said we "like" each other shows maybe the relationship is not really serious so I don't really see the need to get all stressed out because of what you think her parents wants. Just go about living your life and if it happens it happens.
