Star Trek Beyond was more true to the tv Star Trek of the like of TNG than any single one of the TNG films though.

Beyond was the most pure Star Trek film we have gotten in what, 20+ years?

Maybe. But then again they could have replaced all of the cuts with Pine in it with an actual plank of wood with a different stupid slogan written in all caps every 3 minutes and it would have been a Folger's Crystals Challenge I would have failed. Besides Pine's complete lack of charisma and sincerity as a leader I actually kind of enjoyed Beyond.

The easiest way to fuck up an Attack on Titan movie would be to adapt it straight, because the manga/anime is straight garbage. Running it through the Hollywood sausage factory might turn it into something worthwhile.

Agreed.

However i think the author was quite creative in how the characters' gear functions. Could make for really amazing cinematography if done well.

Geez. Wonder why GITS did so bad.

I figured it would have had some mass market appeal. The white washing controversy hurt it a lot or will anime adaptions just never be popular?

Because there was no interesting pitch to audiences.

Here's a random trailer.

ScarJo is a future cop or assassin, who was remade into a new body. Ok? That's the premise of Robocop, and at least the trailers for that showed who he was before everything went down. Why should they care?

it makes me wonder just why the hell lucy opened with $40 million, thereby convincing people scar jo's a bankable action lead.

The pitch: A woman accidentally takes a drug that unlocks the hidden potential of the human brain. Here's a trailer for that. Which looks more interesting and straightforward?

Also, Lucy was up against Hercules, the second week of The Purge: Anarchy, and the third week of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. GITS is bookended by Power Rangers, Logan, Kong: Skull Island ahead and Fate of the Furious in two weeks.

And people don't pay $15 a pop to watch Star Trek on the big screen. They will however pay for an action movie wearing Star Trek's clothing.

Truthfully, I also think Into Darkness sabotaged the next film.

Lucy could not have asked for a better schedule to release in, just as GITS couldn't have picked a worse time to release.

What is the point of adapting it then

I don't understand the mentality on calling things straight up garbage, its a great story in my opinion, even then it's not perfect.

But calling something garbage is just a shortcut to having an opinion, congratulations, you didn't even try.

While the raw ingredients for GITS to be a hit were there the execution always looked suspect. Aesthetically speaking it looked interesting but not really mainstream enough to pull in the dudebros, especially when they shot themselves in the foot by showing ScarJo taking off a piece of her face to reveal the android underneath in the trailer.

With two super expensive strike outs under his belt I wonder what Rupert Sanders does next in a desperate attempt to stay in the studio game? I imagine it will come down to whatever cinematic universe is willing to take a punt on him.

Maybe he'll try and land the Venom gig at Sony? Given how they've both done of late they could be a match made in heaven...,

I could see Saban making a Power Rangers sequel even if it barely gets past the $100mil mark worldwide. Don't ask me why.

If the film craters Internationally (which looks to be the case) then there will be no Power Rangers sequel. Full stop. It doesn't look as if the merchandise made enough of an impact to move the needle either.

Making less than $200m worldwide is a disaster for Lionsgate given that it's international partners/buyers (whom they rely on to co-finance their whole slate through acquisitions) will likely all have taken a bath on the film financially.

I had a feeling it's opening weekend gross would paper over the film's performance in the short term. Anybody who wanted to see a PR film saw it on opening weekend it's not expanding it's beyond that.

If Lionsgate made this film for a low price point, which was originally the plan, then this wouldn't even be a discussion..., but they need hits and new franchises so they are swinging for the fences.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

To add: A sequel for Power Rangers is not going to happen given the Int'l Licensing agreements in place - they've paid over $60M out of the $120M production costs (slide 69) for Power Rangers.

The film was lucky to have a quasi-successful launch domestically. Moving forward, Lionsgate is going to have a hard time financing tentpoles films if they keep under-performing internationally.

Agreed. Also, thanks for the PDF of the Lionsgate investor document. I'll give that a read later on.

BatB will be back on top next week. After seeing it, I think word of mouth will be really strong. It will be the family film of pre summer season.

Both power rangers and gints had no chance of breaking into the mainstream crowds. Neither property is strong enough for anything above a nostalgia trip. Very few people care about these IPs.

I totally forgot about Hercules, is that the Rock's superpower, to make you totally forget his bombs?

That's probably it for anime adaptions for a while lol.

Nah, they'll be back. Like herpes.

Power Rangers had a chance to be breakout hit if it was at least as good as the first Transformers film (which was a decent film, fuck you guys).

Instead its boring, filled with asshole main characters and they don't even morph until the 90 minute mark.

Also, who ever thought to give Kimberly revenge-porn as a backstory needs to be banned from Hollywood.

I'm supposed to trust your judgment when that pops up?

Boss baby was really good, GAF. It was advertised terribly. It's really much more than "what if a baby was actually an adult lololol". It also has some really great animation.

This is the most fucked opinion in this thread. How's the main cast assholes? They're super likable and relatable.

I got the strangest sense that they were holding back just a bit too much from the trailers because it always came back to the scene where the big brother walks in on the baby having a business call and then the jokes about turning him into a gofer. That might be enough to hook a child but they could have put in just a little bit of appeal for the parents if there is any of that in the movie.

It makes me sad that GITS bombed, regardless of the whitewashing/critical reception. It gives me flashbacks to the last time I thought anime would storm Hollywood at the turn of the millennium, when all these stories about a live action Ninja Scroll, Akira, etc were put on hold following the bombing of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Titan AE (pseudo-anime, that one).

I guess mainstream audiences just don't want it.

Lionsgate failed to make Power Rangers into an event. Normally a Hollywood reinvention of an ancient mass market super popular toy property would have been a big deal, but this Power Rangers movie never felt like the Power Rangers movie event that people have been thinking about for ages. It more seemed like a minor release, like a TMNT or Smurf sequel.

I think part of that is to blame on the movie itself; it doesn't seem like a radical innovative departure (like the Transformers or Star Trek movies) or an exciting and familiar interpretation (like the Marvel movies or Disney live action remakes). It exists in this void where they are technically Power Rangers, but they look like badly drawn versions of them, with nonexistent action, and characters that look unappealing and terribly written from the trailers.

A total departure like the gritty dark POWER/RANGERS short that was floating around a few years ago (which was in fact a parody criticizing the practice, but ironically had a ton of people love it), or a more faithful and comedic version of the original show would probably had caught people's attention, and therefore made it more a splash in the market.

I think DW did a pretty good job advertising it to the target audience. I have seen the reaction to the trailer as it played before two other animated films at the theater and it got big laughs from kids and adults. Sure, it's anecdotal evidence but considering how well it opened this weekend I would say it hit the target.

I believe the final trailer/TV spots revealed more about the film than the debut trailer.

You'd think that a marketing team would only expose the original material in their efforts if they believed it would add to an exciting part of the film's pedigree, like sometimes you see in trailers little bits like "From the director of" or "Based on the best-selling book by" or "From the mind of"

GitS got none of that in the trailers I saw. This perhaps reinforces the idea that nobody believed that general audiences gave a single shit about anime or manga, and they were clearly banking on ScarJo + dystopian cyberpunk to hook audiences.

Which is dumb as hell. If it was just those two without GitS's "IP"/baggage (and the white-washing), it'd have probably done better. Instead the "whitewashing" and expectations from fans absolutely sinked it.

I'll catch a matinee sometime this weekend I guess since I doubt audiences will be stomping in for it

As much as I think the whitewashing in GiTS was total bull shit it likely had a very very tiny factor in the box office.

Like average Joe's don't even have any idea GiTS is a Japanese thing. The average consumer they were trying to attract would have no knowledge at all about that controversy

This. I really doubt that many people are aware of the whitewashing.

I still like how desperate the marketing got in the end. The final trailers and all the TV spots made sure to have Movie Announcer Guy blurt out "SCARLETT JOHANSSON IN GHOST IN THE SHELL". I guess to get those folks that walk up to the box office saying "What's playing? Oh there's that Scarlett Johansson movie, Ghost Machine or something, let's see that."

part of me is sad about GitS bombimg because the dream of good manga/anime adaptations remains dead.

but another part is happy because this means hollywood can't destroy more series with their adaptations.
not that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure would ever be adapted since that's too weird for general audiences. hell, it's too weird for many anime/manga fans.

Power Rangers was far, far better than Transformers.

I blame the trailers, there was tons of negativity over this movie in being some edgy reboot that no one wanted. I went into the theater expecting a complete disaster but I came out with a huge smile on my face.

Also their Ranger Suits and Zords look like a Transformers inspired abomination. It did not have a lot going for it.

Oh ok.

I mean GITS atleast looked very competently made with a big star as a lead. Given her success with Lucy in a very similar role, I bet the producers and studio thought this was a slam dunk.

ScarJo has an history of box office success. GITS lack of success will not be blamed on her but on the fact that adapting manga is bad.

It's shocking
Even super duper mega international star Michael Pitt couldn't manage to save this

Feel sorry for Micheal Pitt dude is a great actor just seems stuck and can't get a film role to launch him further even after his acting hype from Boardwalk Empire and Hannibal

I don't think he wants that level of fame, which is good because he's a nightmare behind the scenes apparently.

Is anyone seriously trying to claim that is a factor? The amount of people who care about staying true to a manga/anime couldn't fill up a single theater.
