Battle Brothers |OT| The Tactical RPG meets the Mount & Blade/Pirates formula

As I'm sure you might've noticed, piercing weapons aren't very effective against undead. Also, flails are great against shields.

Yeah, I know, but for some reason (RNGesus and the poor state of my economy right now) I only had (and still have) one flail.

I don't have problems with the regular Ancient auxiliaries, they just requiere some mace grinding. But the legionares... oh boy.

The undead crisis just started for me. Necromancers with geist are awful. I need to get some cutting weapons to increase chance of dismembering the undead.

Also killed a band of undead with ancient honor guards. One of them dropped a warscythe pole arm that has a sweeping attacking.

Any advice for building characters to use 2handers? It seems likes shield are necessary (at least early on) and the AoE swings seem weak.

It's best to wait on 2 handers until you're a bit into the game, you'll want guys with at least 60 melee skill so you can make use of them. Also need heavy armor/helmets to make up for the lack of a shield.

I guess it is a compliment to the game.

I know a lot of people at Obsidian have been obsessing over it too. It's such a great game.

I've been using one since the very beginning. It may not have been optimal, but he's a beast. I gave him Colossus and Steel Brow to start with. Also make sure he's very well-equipped on armor.

Thanks for the tips on the 2handers!

Indeed. Josh Sawyer seems to love it.

Can anyone talk about this side of the game? It's the main thing I'm on the fence about. I'm interested in the combat, but I'm interested in this kind of reactivity even more.
Is the kind of reactivity and depth in that story from the OT evident throughout in the game? That blog post is what made me interested in this

I'm not really sure to be honest. I'm playing quite slow, and haven't encountered anything quite as reactive as the OP's example yet, but there does appear to be events, or men you can recruit that will have long-term consequences. It's certainly the type of game that you'll have your own personal stories based on the unique events, characters, and battles in which you run into, much like you might in Mount & Blade or Crusader Kings.

My first fight against werewolves. In the first turn they've already moved up and caught me. This isn't going to be good...

I underestimated their movement range and have made the situation even worse. This is going to be bloody.

I come out all heads alive, but it left its toll. My armor is shredded, one of my men suffered permanent brain damage, and most of my company is wounded.

I decide to buy some supplies to repair my equipment and head west to see if my fortune changes.

What is this? It could be a trap... I'll take a risk.

*Ahem*

I think I can afford to recruit two more men... Wow! Those stars.

Today was a tragic day...

A detour to the north lost too much time and crowns, and once again the Sons of Folly knew desperation. I traveled south across mountains just in time to reach some form of civilization. I needed a job, any job, and with that I sealed my fate. Half a day of escorting a caravan later and we were ambushed.

This wasn't just any group of brigands, but one largely made up of very well-equipped raiders and for the first time, a brigand leader, Ewald the Savage.

Hans, who I've considered the leader and front-man of my company faced him, and unfortunately did not survive the battle.

Rest in peace Hans.

Map seeding is out!

Added map seed that can be entered upon starting a new campaign, and seen for ongoing campaigns created after this update, for replaying and sharing maps.
Added checkbox for 'Permanent Destruction' during late game crises when starting a new campaign. It's checked by default to work how you're used to. Unchecking it will result in settlements getting the 'Razed' situation for a considerable time instead of being permanently destroyed.
Added warning prompt for users of Avast due to compatibility issues introduced with one of their latest updates.

Changed game to unpause only after autosaving is completed when leaving towns in ironman mode, so no time on the worldmap is wasted.

Fixed issue with the game potentially hanging in some cases as characters rise from the dead during the Undead Scourge.
Fixed AI not using the 'Footwork' skill properly in some cases.
Fixed issue with 'Decisive Battle' contract.
Fixed issue with 'Privateering' contract.
Fixed various minor issues.

EDIT: Holy shit the Avast warning. I was expecting something different, it scared me :D

Brigand leader points me towards an old tower in ruins trying to save his life. I decide to bite and go to take a look, finding some zombies and a necromancer. And by some I mean 23, which become almost 50 thanks to the necro's fuckery. Holy cow with all the grinding until I managed to breach in and reach the guy in black.

At least I got a shiny toy :p. Although seems somebody got angry. Few hours later this happened. Welp.

Finding this game really addictive. Find myself booting it up and raiding sites or fulfilling contracts whenever I am bored and time flying by.

Shame it is getting a bit overlooked on here.

It is. I would have thought more of CRPG GAF would be playing.

The RPG Codex thread is very active.

Does anyone know if there are any benefits to buying food besides Grounded Grain?

Hopefully game gets some more press/traction, deserves it.

I think you can get some events related to a morale boost for having luxury foods, but the rarity of the events and cost advise against the purchase.

It would be more interesting if different foods added different benefits, similar to Mount and Blade, instead of a longer spoil time which seems negligible currently.

My first serious playthrough has come to an end, with my loyal men being slaughtered while defending a city from an undead siege. Up to three times I managed to defeat the ancient hordes, but the attrition in my ranks was too much and the fourth battle became our last.

70 Battle Brother points, which I guess is quite low :p, and was around day 80 something. I'm not sure if a "late game crisis" that early (poped up at 70-something) is really that "late game" or I was just terrible managing my band. Played in veteran.

Time to test that map seeding in a new game. There was an interesting Reddit thread on this.

I've had this on my wishlist for awhile. But I won't be able too get around to playing it for awhile. To many games this year so far. It looks great though.

Picked this up finally

The moment that convinced me this game was legit was in my second battle, when my coward of a new hire should suddenly ran away in the middle of battle, leaving me a man short on the front lines. I didn't expect that personality trait to influence the battle in that way

Oh, and that PC Gamer review is right. Combat feels brutal as fuck

Okay, I'm slowly becoming convinced to buy this game. The aestheic initially put me off. Mainly the army of bobbleheads moving around a map but this actually looks like a very interesting game.

If I didn't have a Humble subscription I forgot to cancel popping up in 36 hours and Cosmic Star Heroine a few days later, I'd be all over this, even though it jumped $10 from when I was eyeing it in EA.

Have the devs said anything about long term update plans? Something I might want to hold off for before buying? Or should I just jump in when I get time?

After Hans died, one bad situation after the other led to my company falling apart. I decided to retire before it got to the point where my company would've been wiped out.

It's such a sad end to the Sons of Folly. :(

I made it to day 53, which I suppose isn't too bad for my first run, and on Expert Ironman. I feel like I've learned a lot that I'll be able to apply to my next campaign though.

I bought the game and I'm really enjoying it so far. What I really like about the game is that it creates great gameplay through completely natural occurrences. So often games try to do things that are so grandiose while forgetting that things that occur in the real world can provide great gameplay opportunities.

For example, I've always thought a game where sea exploration is both fascinating in that you're exploring for new worlds but also scary because of the threat of death that both the unknown and the sea presents would be a great gameplay opportunity. You might die at sea because of a storm, because of infighting, attempting to pirate an enemies ship, shortage of food, food gets spoiled due to a diease what have you. There are so many things that would make a game with sea exploration f'ing exciting yet it's something you don't really see in video games.

This game has an iron man mode like XCom, and that provides a permadeath situation where death has a real consequence and great gameplay scenarios can arise out of something that seems relatively simple. The game also has various injuries (short term and long term) you have to deal with, friendly fire damage and many, many more things that arise out of real scenarios that provide interesting and exciting gameplay.

I was initially a bit hesitant with this game because the bobblehead looking dudes moving around the map wasn't very appealing to me but the combat is really quite brutal and very strategic.

Started a new game, and I'm really happy with the map I got. Kinda balanced between the three noble factions, and the south looks insane on the economic side:

Orange, towns producing Dye. White/green, Salt and Gems. Yellow is a harbour city to sell the goods. Red, a huge citadel (not really well equiped, although there are other castles with furnaces and workshops) to spend your money. Both Wikstadt and Reinbruch have temples. And the starting position is in the middle of that area. You can get over 2k profits on trading by day one/two... and that is just the start.

Starting Bros are okish at best. Athletic Axe and Iron Lungs/Cocky Crossbow.

Seed 2b23f1.

That's certainly nice. It's very risky taking three-star missions on Expert.

I started up another company recently. Let's see how it goes. Just having a better knowledge of how trading and the economy works has given me a decent number of crowns to work with early on.

How is everyone's campaigns going?

0 crashes since I bought it in Early Access a year ago until last patch. 5 crashes since it, including one when saving the game after a pretty big battle to advance on the undead late game crisis, becoming corrupted. Fuck me.

EDIT: Autosave doesn't work either. Welp.

Day 83 on the map I posted above, going better than last time in equipment and builds but I still feel I'm not prepared enough for a late game crisis popping out on day 70-something. Only having a couple decent armours (aka >115) is not a nice thing with all those undead legionaries with pikes. I just fought a battle to recover certain thing and I was going to try to destroy a couple undead bases, when the crashes happened.

Also, Witch Hunter sergeant best sergeant.

This campaign has been going fantastic so far, though my recruits have been pretty sub-par. Where as on my first campaign I was completely broke, struggling from contract to contract, now I have 4000 crowns to work with. Sometimes you have to take advantage of the suffering of others (ambushed trade routes).

I'm struggling to find a good two-handed sword or axe though.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this game. It intrigues me. I like mount & blade, xcom, fire emblem and stuff, so I guess it could be a good purchase?

Tried the game and seems cool indeed, but I noticed that during the battles I don't understand what's going on since there almost no animation and stuff

I'm still on my second campaign, and doing well. I've reached the end-game crisis of the Undead Scourge, and am on Day 110 I believe.

I got my first named item from a very tough Hedge Knight. He almost chopped three of my brothers down in one swing as I tried to surround him towards the end. His brothers lay slain around him, he was surrounded, and held down by a net, yet he gave no shits, and maintained himself confident as ever. I desperately needed the helm and armor though. I managed to rotate one out. Another got pushed out of the way, thankfully, by an Undead. The other got disemboweled. I should be more careful with Hedge Knights.

How's the state of the game currently? I've been thinking about purchasing a copy.

The premise intrigues me .. and I like the High Medieval setting. It's been compared to Mount and Blade and Banner Saga, but I found the gameplay to be quite tedious and boring.

It also looks like there is lots of stats management which I generally find dull..

I've taken a break after putting in 230 hours. It's a great game. They should be releasing patch 1.1 soon.

Development on Battle Brothers will continue as we start working on the 1.1 update. It's going to be a moderately sized one that adds lots of little things that didn't quite make it into the release, like some additional events and contracts that were left on the cutting room floor, as well as various quality of life improvements suggested by you. By now, some balancing and pacing issues have also come to light which the update will address. The update will be free and not require you to start a new campaign.

I'm not really sure what to tell you. It's great turn-based combat with great enemy design that forces you to adapt your strategy and tactics. The combat is definitely its greatest feature, but I found the world, the text events, and writing to be important to the experience. I think the game could have benefited from an even greater focus on the world simulation, and some minor improvements such as including buildings on the combat map and more diversity in contract types. As is though, it's one of the highlights of 2017 for me.

There are stats, and they are meaningful, but I wouldn't say they're overwhelming, but my opinion may differ there.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Arulan! Well, the combat system certainly sounds intriguing.

Are there any flaws about the game that you think is worth mentioning as well?
