Bought. Thought about buying Resistance 3 instead,(which is probably the better game by quite a bit) but I want to play my Vita, and I want to show devs it's worth developing for..

I am honestly finding Burning Skies more fun than R3, even though I know that opinion will be rare. I just feel like the pacing and action are way better.

I prefer it this way myself honestly.

Download the demo, you like it you can just simply buy the unlock key and you're good to go. Prefer it over downloading a 500 MB file then having to download the entire thing all over again.

I'm with Mutanthands and BruiserBear on this issue. There is absolutely no reason why Sony should be releasing a 3.1 GB demo. Do they realize how long that's can take to download, even on a relatively good connection? These are the same guys that allegedly charge third-party publishers additional bandwidth fees in order to encourage more compact code...too bad they don't practice what they preach.

I can understand your perspective if we were discussing a smaller game--perhaps under 300 MB. Anything larger than that, though, and the developers should prepare a proper demo that fits into 300 MB or less. Large files are not only a strain on their servers, but they're also a strain on gamers' patience.

I'm sure some people aren't even going to bother downloading it, considering some of the shaky reviews the game has received from a few of the popular game review sites. One of my friends who was discouraged by a few negative reviews not only canceled his preorder, but also said he's not going to "waste his time" to even try the demo because the download is so large.

That said, I'm at least grateful that they released a demo for this game. It's a shame that the system is telling me I've got to wait about another 2½ hours before I can try it.

So how does this game hold up to your typical gameloft shooter in terms of gameplay (controls aren't as good, we all know that already)?

gameloft games tend to look really nice, but have rather boring level layouts and boring enemy encounters, but they do seem to be improving at an alarming rate (they do have a new fps every half a year or so thats noticeably better then the previous one). Nova 3's campaign is easily the best fps campaign on handhelds at release, and can hold it's own with the B tier console shooters of this gen and probably some of the better stuff of last gen.

I don't have any issues with the controls.
My problem is with the AI. The boss of the 1st chapter chased me near a corner then just stood shooting the wall. Also the draw distance is very poor only things up in your face look good. There appears to be a LOD system controlling what the quality of geometry and texture is. Some of the signs on the city streets are nearly unreadable they get so blurry. Kind of a N64 vaseline blur.

I thought the demo was pretty good. It wasn't very exciting, but it controlled really well and the crossbow/shotgun was really cool.

I like this game in a lot of ways. Pretty good graphics, nice lighting, decent story, tight gunplay. It's just that there's a lot of things that aren't good. Audio quality, video compression (dreadful), multiplayer is completely barebones (not to mention it doesn't work right now!), and it just doesn't feel like a lot of love was put into it.

I don't know what I would rate it, honestly. It's definitely not a 2/10, though. That's just stupid.

Never understood why videos were compressed as shit on PSP and now on Vita. Like really? Am I watching a YouTube quality video on this OLED screen? Hate that.

I played the demo since my copy still has not arrived. FING AMAZON.

Controls are great!

Played through the demo while I wait for my copy.

Pros

+ Shooting feels nice and smooth. Chimeran heads explode with a nice pop.
+ You can use the d-pad to navigate menus. Seriously I hate touch only options.
+ Enemies and gun models are great.
+ Henry Stillman is back and he hasn't resorted to drinking himself to death...yet.

Cons

- Rear touch sprinting doesn't work at all but d-pad works fine.
- The animated cutscenes are compressed all to hell.
- Textures, car models, and environments are basic.

And it shouldn't really need to be said but play it with some headphones.

There is. One of the scenes when you first run out of the building, and back to the street, its kinda blurry, then the street sharpens before your eyes.

Anyway, I really like the controls, and...honestly the touch controls dont really feel tacked on in most instances. I think back panel sprinting is a double tap, but i'm not sure.

Yeah. I could definitely get used to playing shooters on Vita. I had no trouble aiming whatsoever.

The level design is mediocre and the encounters in the demo are very by-the-numbers. Thankfully, it's a great prover for FPS controls. That's a breakthrough over PSP.

The graphics are a big step down from Uncharted, but I wasn't bothered by them. I can't wait to see how Bioshock looks.

I dig this.

Pros:

-Game runs well enough
-Great music
-Godtier shotgun
-Great controls
-Interesting setting for the demo level. Really liked seeing the invasion happen. The console games never showed us because insomniac sux.
-Grenade controls are good

Cons:
-Gun sounds are really off. The bullseye sounds awful
-Enemy encounter design hasn't been super great so far

The double tap the back screen works fine for me. Visually the game reminds me of like a PS1 version of Mafia 2.

Finally an actual handheld FPS using twin sticks!

Hmm... Are we getting a Killzone FPS at E3 as a showcase Vita shooter?

(Just purchased and will happily try it out tonight)

Well I have been playing the retail copy for a bit and so far I am pleased with the purchase. Playing it on hard.

I ike the weapon mods and the touch controls (even sprint) are working great.

The game really does control like a dream, I am getting scoped carbine and auger headshots like it is nothing. Very tight controls and really makes me excited for future FPS games on the Vita.

I really hope Killzone makes an apearance at E3, and I hope they pump enough money into its production to sqeeze out some native res graphical goodness.

Hopefully they get multi up and running I would love to try that out tonight..

"Resistance: Burning Skies is just a decent FPS but nothing more. Uninspired and lackustre level design married with mediocre AI, seemingly unable to promptly react to your attacks, leave a lot to be desired and in the end make for a disappointing campaign which only rarely finds some entertaining moments. The only redeeming thing which can be said about the barebone online multiplayer package is that is works, but fails to bring any excitement thanks to the lack of a good enough number of game modes (there's only three). Audio-visually RBS is also just above average lacking overall polish and punch. Recommended only to die-hard fans of the franchise, others will be better off waiting for the next, and hopefully more enticing, FPS to grace the PS Vita"

Wow, 3.1gb and the videos are still compressed to hell. Looks like trying to watch a youtube video over an EDGE connection. lol

Anyway, I only played the demo and I found it to be pretty "meh". Standard Resistance fare, which is good for people who like Resistance, I guess. Shitty sounding guns, though.

only have a 4gb card so cant dl resistance now but am grabbing gravity rush...

so would you guys buy resistance if you could get it for under 20?

In a perfect world, we'd all be homersexual
Just played through the demo - the controls and aiming felt surprisingly good but the rest just felt really amateurish and unfinished, and like a FPS game from years ago. How anyone can compare this to R3 or even R1 is beyond me. In some parts the NPC's mouths didn't even move when they were talking! The guns just lacked any sense of impact and sounded like toys. Just felt sloppy - shooting those small spidery things and they exploded into the same 'chunks' as the regular Chimera.

It was just a case of slogging through a battle, running down the only corridor available to you, stopping for another battle with cannon fodder aliens, and moving on. At one point I walked too far beyond a 'trigger point' and the game took over, pushing my character backwards to start from the scripted point from where I could walk forward again.

The boss fight was WTF terrible, with no strategy or stages to the battle or anything except 'shoot at glowing bit'. So disappointing, I was really looking forward to this and the GAF impressions actually seem pretty good but there's no way I can even convince myself that I enjoyed it - I'd only be buying it for the FPS-on-handheld novelty value. Hate to be negative about it, but Sony could do far, far better than this.

That's not a boss fight in the demo.

The first boss fight is actually pretty cool but it's bit further along.

This is the response I got when I asked about a credit for buying before the discount:
Hello dark,

Thank you dark for taking the time to contact Sony Network Entertainment International LLC (SNEI) regarding the price for Resistance: Burning Skies™. My name is Sandy, your PS®Vita specialist, and I will assist you. I apologize for any frustration that this may have caused and I can certainly answer your questions.

First, I would like to welcome you to the PS Vita family. We are very excited for this product and I know you will have a great experience with this system.

I am so sorry the purchase was made just before the price decreased. I am an avid gamer on a budget and I can certainly understand your frustration. I would be happy to assist you today.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer a credit due to the price decrease. I know how frustrating this is for you and I sincerely apologize. It seems I purchase items just before the price drops on them also. The last computer monitor I purchased went on sale the next week for more than $100 off. I am so sorry, I do know how disheartening this can be.

Please keep in mind, your system does come with a one-year manufacturer's warranty. Because you are still within your warranty, I highly recommend purchasing The PlayStation® Protection Plan to extend your manufacturer’s warranty today.

Once the original warranty expires after 12 months from the date of purchase, the plan takes over, providing either 12 or 24 months of additional coverage. This will cover any amount of times that the system may need to come in for repair and will also cover any of the accessories that came in the box with your system. We have the ability to guarantee your downloaded content from the PlayStation®Network as well. The plan is only $29.99 for one year or $39.99 for two years in the United States.

If you are in the United States and would like to have this coverage, please respond to this email with your 10-digit telephone number, time zone and best time of day to reach you and I will gladly contact you to setup this plan on your system.

I apologize again for any frustration the price decrease has caused you. If you have the time, dark, I would greatly appreciate it if you would fill out the survey that will arrive in a few days. These surveys reflect how I performed today in my email correspondence to you. I am able to review these surveys with my supervisor, and the information helps me improve the service I can provide to you.
Shaking my fucking head. I was skimming through comments on the PS Blog and it seems they plan on making things right, but this response is such bullshit that I had to share it.

I enjoyed the demo a lot, but as with Unit 13 and most other Vita games I got burned on, I don't think I'll enjoy it at a $40 pricetag.

You enjoyed it? It's novel because eff yeah a FPS on a handheld - but it's so amateur. And it doesn't even feel like Resistance to me. Meh. I'd pick it up at 10 or 15.

+1 for thinking a 3.1GB demo is beyond fucking ridiculous. Demo was pretty good, but whenever I had to use the touch screen I was annoyed because it forced me to take my hands off of the controls. I mean, did nobody test this and go "Hm... maybe the touch controls should be optional.."? Other than the stupid forced touch screen controls, the game controls pretty well. It's not perfect, but it's the best FPS controls I've experienced on a handheld.

And yeah, I cannot connect to multiplayer. "Sorry we didn't catch this pre-release." I just view Nihilistic as a completely incompetent developer. If this weren't the only FPS/online competitive multiplayer game on the system, I'd have passed on this.

lmao holy shit.

That's probably why I usually just call customer support instead of emailing. Just yell loud enough and you usually get what ya want.

Woooowww. "dark, your 4$ ain't shit. See, I blew 100$ in the wind in a similar situation. Tough shit, dark. Would you like a protection plan?"

Hilarious

Played the demo...ugh, very ugly game. The weapon models actually look decent, but everything else looks like crap.

Hopefully CoD looks a lot better on the Vita.

Played Gravity Daze right after it, and was much more impressed with everything that game had to offer.
