LTTP: Sonic and the Black Knight

So, as the latest entry in my attempt to play through the Sonic series, I decided to tackle this rather crappy little game on Saturday.
First off, a link to my other Sonic L/RTTPs, I guess:
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Heroes
Sonic 06
Sonic 2 Game Gear
Tails Adventure

So yeah, first off... this game is short. We managed to beat the game, dick around in the battle mode, play some board games for a couple hours, and take out a big chunk of Sonic Unleashed Wii all in one night. It was probably less than three hours, and that was to get to the real final boss. There's not TOO much to say about this one. The sword is pretty much just waggle to win, outside of boss fights, where Knuckles and Blaze are alternate between blocking their obvious patterns and waggling (though none of us ever figured out how to win when you clash swords). They also apparently couldn't figure out how to have rings appear, and the non-CG cutscenes look SUPER cheap. Also, the missions that make you pay rings to villagers are lame, and often end up having you slowly walk backwards to talk to villagers. Probably the worst thing, though, is how open the game looks at times (the field areas in particular), and yet how VERY on rails it is.

Anyway, I think the King Arthur fight merits special mention, because it SUCKED. Most of it is waiting to hit the things to fill your boost meter, but then you get up there and have to do the wait and waggle game. This is fine for the first part (though it's SUPER lame that the timing is linked to the tutorial-looking waggle icon instead of the visual indication given by the boss), but then in the second part the fifth attack of that sequence is just... off. Took forever to get it to work.

And then came the timer stages where the timer kept going down even when you died, which was... lovely. And that stupid dragon fight where in it's super hard to dodge the fireballs to the side because you just don't move to the side well when jumping. Oh, and the final boss turns out to essentially be an easier version of Arthur, honestly. At least the Super Sonic knight armor didn't look too bad, especially considering how terrible that idea sounds.

Also, the battle mode is pure garbage. Just... awful. Also have to appreciate that they had to buff the roster with the non-knight versions of the characters. Bleh.

All around a pretty abysmal game, but at least it's short, and probably better than at least Shadow and 06.

My arms were sore for 3 days after trying to win the final boss battle.

I learned afterwards something is wrong with the visual indicators/timing so if you follow them you will never win.

I must have done something different by mistake or frustration to win.

I hated black Knight. It pretty much cut everything that awesome about Secret Rings and didn't improve most of the stuff that could have used tweaking. Such a shame because a proper sequel building on Secret Rings could have been amazing.

I thought it was alright >_>. Definitely a step down from Secret Rings but people calling worse than 06 are insane. 06 is downright broken. Black Knight is just a platformer with bad controls and questionable design decisions.

The only good things to come out of this game was the music and graphics, really.

Still though, absolutely love the soundtrack. Sega should have just made a "here is what would be the soundtrack to our new Storybook game that will not exist because it's an awful series" OST.

Yeah. Secret Rings was alright, but the idea to have a series of Sonic games based on ancient stories was just dumb.

I don't think it was a bad idea personally because Secret Rings had some of the best set pieces in the entire series (Night Palace in particular was fantastic), and I'm not averse to the idea of Sonic traveling between worlds/time. That was almost a franchise gimmick that could have been established since Sonic CD. But playing it unabashedly straight faced with the whole "characters are figures from their stories and it's based on Aladdin" was dumb and pointless, especially if it had to culminate with Black Knight requiring Sonic to have a sword of all things.

People point to Sonic 06 as being the worst atrocity to come out of the franchise, but by far this game is. There's next to nothing good about this game; it's just relentless waggle controls in abysmal level design. Luckily enough, I only rented the game, so I didn't spend more than 5 dollars on this horrible game.

I actually enjoyed Secret Rings to an extent: it had a lot of problems with it, but a sequel that fine tuned some of the mechanics that had promise could have been a great game. Instead we got this piece of junk. A real shame that the storybook games had to die with such a terrible follow-up.

You are the only one who ever attended the party, so I guess you aren't technically late to it.

It's a horrible game, not much else to say. Nice graphics, I guess. Horrible, horrible, horrible gameplay.

My nephew got this for his birthday a couple years back (in May). Holiday season rolls around, and we go visit my wife's family in December, and he asks me to beat the last guy for him.

He was stuck on the tutorial dragon boss.

He had just been playing the first, what, two levels over and over again.

For seven months.

He was 12.

He's terrible at everything
