Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

Wow May flew by. So I clocked 35 movies last month with quite a few of those being shorts but I also watch some 3 hour monsters so it evens out.

Top five
1. 2001
2. Mad Max: the Road Warrior
3. The Dark Knight Rises
4. Dark City
5. Drive

The Black Cat, The Bird with Crystal Plumage, and Lisa & the Devil were all cool honorable mentions.

Biggest disappointment was the snooze fest otherwise known as the Witch. It's like golf, as soon as I turn that shit on I'm falling asleep. Except I was excited to see this and bought the bluray. I think I like the movie more in hindsight than I did initially but that doesn't change the need for a pillow to get through it.

I watched hardly nothing in May, I be slippin'

Journey to Agartha
A Letter to Momo
The Woodsman and the Rain* rewatch
10 Clover Field Lane
Captain America Civil War
Love and Honour

However i'm pretty happy with those movies. I finally saw Tampopo too which was pretty great. Very silly and easy to watch. Great cast too.

The Baytown Outlaws - Good movie
Let's Be Cops - It got bad reviews but I liked it.
The Reese Witherspoon movie when she play a cop.

Gorgeous and unusual looking movie. Puts you under a spell and evokes feelings you can't fully grasp or explain.
The concert scene, with the way it was filmed seemingly first person at times, was tremendously powerful.

My top five for last month?

1. Finding Nemo
2. Everybody Wants Some
3. The Revenant
4. Civil War
5. The Nice Guys

Last night, I watched Finding Nemo. Finished it just before midnight. It'd been PVRed, as I'd never seen it before, and I was quite impressed. I've never been Pixar's biggest fan, outside of Toy Story's series, but this one was a gem.

I also finished the last half of Pitch Perfect 2. It was better than expected. I enjoyed the first one, though, outside of the puke angel, which really soured me.

Fury. Just got a new surround sound setup and what better way to exercise it? Decent movie with awesome sound. I'm thinking We Were Soldiers tomorrow or...I do have Thin Red Line sitting here too but I know WWS sounds good. I'm also keen on the Matrix trilogy very soon too. Glad I've held off on that.

I haven't watched a lot of movies last month cause of tv shows, which were mentioned in a past thread. It's not movies but I'll still give an opinion cause several users here recommended me stuff.

Black Mirror - I really liked it. Every episode is enjoyable as fuck, even when it fails spectacularly (the waldo one). There's no subtleness whatsoever in the show, but I think it makes sense considering both the format and the extreme reality that is presented (either in situations, events or settings). That sort of hyperbolic tone creates an impression. More than the execution, it's always about the idea. The Entire History of You is naturally the most relatable one, the reminiscences that's don''t allows us to go forward.

Utopia - Also entertaining as fuck. A lot really. I'm kinda torn on this one because it's one those shows where people lack any communication skills that resolve issues. Also I think about Utopia as a board game. The world really seems populated only by the characters that are on screen. They are everything. All connected. It's only their actions that make any difference. But the set of characters presented make it very very hard to accept this. For such a grand conspiracy, it lacks scale (and this is not a budget/tv issue, more about the writing). And it the second season the narrative kinda scatters to places that don't feel organic at all. Stil, this is very enjoyable, well made and the first episode is amazing (and those 5 minutes in the opening scene, including credits are a blast). Terrific soundtrack too.

I remember posting on gaf that I was kinda glad Fincher wouldnt be stuck on tv, but after watching, it's easy to see what gravitated him towards this. Could have been very interesting.

This, at times, also reminded me of 20th Century Boys (a manga which could easily be translated to tv).

Mad Men - This one i just started (6 eps). Kinda soapy. January Jones is very (very very) beautiful. Very.

Move-watching time suffered last month because of TV-watching time and moving apartments. But nevertheless, top new watches:

1. Captain America: Civil War
2. The Nice Guys
3. Directed by John Ford
4. Stolen Kisses
5. The Ox-Bow Incident

I've been going through this series very slowly, mostly because my girlfriend wants to watch it with me but she's only up for it about once a month (literally, we started this show in January and only watched 5 so far). It's pretty uneven and a little exhausting, but The Entire History of You is really sublime.

Watched Boogie Nights for the first time last night, and as someone who hated Inherent Vice and There Will Be Blood and wasn't thrilled with The Master, I was surprised at how much I liked it. Maybe one of the best movie soundtracks ever, plus it was just fun the majority of the film.

Hey, new to this thread. Don't know if I'll post regularly, but I keep peeking into these threads every now and then to find things that are not on my radar.

1. What's your favorite Movie?
Phew, they change ever so often. atm, it might be Perspectrum by Ishu Patel. It's by the NFB/ONF, you can watch it on their website, here [6m22s]
2. Who's your favorite director?
Also changes frequently, but Norman McLaren is a staple.
3. Who are your favorite actors/actresses?
I'm in love with Catherine Deneuve, especially when she lip syncs (read: in Demy films).
4. Favorite Genre(s)?
I don't like this question. Experimental, animation, short films, musicals, melodrama. Really most genres as long as the film is good. There are notably few western that I like though.
5. What's your favorite performance in film?
Pas de deux by McLaren. The dancers are stellar, even if it's super cheesy.

What I saw and liked in May
Hellsapoppin' by H.C. Potter - whew, what a ride. It's so over the top, it's really a pleasure to watch. The dance scene was unexpected but brilliant, and they keep firing the jokes at a machine-gun speed at you. Even if not every single one hit its goal i was constantly laughing.
The Forbidden Room by Guy Maddin - great looks, great narrative, many ideas, maybe a tad too long.
Cinéma Concret by Takashi Makino - probably the best of the month, be sure to check it out if it's ever playing near you and you're open to experimental film. It was part concert, part film. Makino played the music with another musican. Every spectator was given paper 3D glasses and Makino stressed that you should feel free to take them of or even turn them around (switch left <-> right eyes) during the screening. It changed the effect on screen and made you examine yourself while watching. Really intense and really special, highly recommended.
Der Nachtmahr by AKIZ - Didn't expect much, but was very pleasantly surprised. Great music, good strobo effects and intense use of sound. The Nachtmahr (the figure) was extremely well done and they're wise enough not to show it off too much in press material. The female lead deserves a special mention, she was really good. Trailer
She/Her by Sonja Wyss - great dance-/performance film. It really nails down that indescribable and extremely complicated love-hate between parents and their adult children.

Rewatch: I found out Jennifer Reeder put most of her films online. Including A Million Miles Away. It's beautiful and makes extremely interesting use of subtitles. You can watch it here [28min]

Watched Boogie Nights for the first time last night, and as someone who hated Inherent Vice and There Will Be Blood and wasn't thrilled with The Master, I was surprised at how much I liked it. Maybe one of the best movie soundtracks ever, plus it was just fun the majority of the film.

Personally, I adore There Will Be Blood and Inherent Vice, but I hear ya. There is a disconnect between Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk, and his later stuff, which isn't as "Altman-esque"... Although, Inherent Vice did remind me a bit of The Long Goodbye.

Terrifying. Thrilling. Engaging. A film would be lucky to be the epitome of any of these three qualities. The Conjuring masters all three, and has room to be even be heartfelt. James Wan directs the film to perfection, brilliantly blending the old classical horror style with modern filmmaking techniques such as the shaky-cam for "realism" and found-footage. Wan knows just how to ratchet up the tension slowly and surely, while building characters to legitimately care for as well. Without Wan at the helm, The Conjuring would be forgettable.

One of the most brilliant touches in The Conjuring is when the girls watch The Brady Bunch. The 1971 setting enhances the familial themes at the heart of the film, with both the Parrons' and the Warrens' relationships with each other and within their own groups feels incredibly real despite the paranormal activity surrounding. When the curse is finally lifted, the catharsis is not only felt by both families but the audience too.

Every actor is perfectly cast. Naming highlights would be a disservice to the entire ensemble. The score is appropriately chilling, and the cinematography is lovely and aids Wan's spectacular direction. James Wan has done the impossible, making such a fantastic film with the major studio system of the 2010s. And it's horror too! The Conjuring is a masterpiece, an operatic horror focused on atmosphere and character while being magnificently petrifying.

10 Coverfield Lane: Thought it was awesome. I took a gamble on it based on the premise alone which I thought was killer and was not disappointed. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is just fantastic and perfect for the role. John Goodman also has a knock out performance. It's just intriguing, interesting and super fascinating. I was transfixed to the screen for the film's entire running time. It's that good. The ending kind of comes out of nowhere but it's surprising and unexpected and the film's better for it. So yeah loved this one. Highly recommended! 9/10

The Revenant: This one's a difficult one. The cinematography is just superb. The sound mix is absolutely amazing. The shots are beautiful. Even the story is quite captivating. But something just didn't click with me here? Reviews have said the film's so good you feel like you're actually there and whilst that's true I felt it was over long and to be honest kind of boring. I persevered because the film has so many redeeming qualities but regardless of the rave reviews I wouldn't recommend this one. Too long and not interesting enough. 6/10

I've seen London Has Fallen and absolutely loved it. It's like 80% straight action and great one. The final assault on terrorist base was just jaw dropping. This is easily one of the best action movies I've seen in recent years. And enormous improvement over first entry in franchise.

So I was pretty shocked to see how much it got trashed by critics. I guess they didn't like muslim terrorists being the bad guys and movie never making any effort to show them as anything that monsters worthy of slaughter? Meh. They made for good bad guys and seeing them killed brutally by Butler was satysfing.

Hope they will do another sequel.

Never thought a month would have so many good indian movie watches in it personally, but here we are.

Love and Friendship

Saw this today. It was decent enough though given the choice again I wouldn't have watched it in theaters. Kate's character was just unlikeable for me and that just spoiled the film for me. It would have been fine if the story was better but sadly I just found it bland. Would have been much better if the manipulations/plans were given more screentime/depth.

Unpopular opinion alert, but I think Magnolia is his weakest film. Or at the very least, it's my least favorite of his. Haven't seen Hard Eight though, I'm sure it would take that spot.

That said, it's still a really good movie.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Boogie Nights
3. The Master
4. Inherent Vice
5. Punch Drunk Love
6. Magnolia

As with all these lists though, I can't rank with 100% accuracy unless I sit down and watch them all very close to each other.

Your list seems to missing Sydney/Hard Eight. Get to it!

Inherent Vice would be at the bottom in my list, because, even though I read the book (which I didn't get), I didn't get. Haven't rewatched it yet though. I'm sure that will help.

I love Magnolia as well. tbh I love all his movies so far, except Inh. Vice.

The Award for Eternal Hatred and Disgust Towards an Inanimate Object: A Safe Place

I watched Captain America: Civil War yesterday. It was pretty good! I think Winter Soldier is still tops for me in the entirety of the MCU, but this was still a worthy followup and I was really pleased to see it take as many risks as it did, both in the storytelling and having considerably higher emotional stakes than just about any other superhero film out there, even at the expense of pokey pacing and devoting a little bit too much time for introductions of new elements to the whole universe that could have been better served at more quality time with the known elements.

IV was just awesome. I really need to buy that and watch it again. Punch Drunk was awesome as well given Adam Sandler. I can't believe how good that was. I just assumed another shitty Sandler flick but it ended up really good and a very different experience that only he could give. Boogie Nights was ok I guess. I honestly don't remember it well at all. TWBB was kind of boring but I saw it a couple years ago and even then felt like I needed to see it again. And...that's all I've watched of his.

I know I watched a lot in May, but I've been slacking on posting about them. I also binge-watched all of Parks and Rec so that cut into movie watching time. I'll make good on that later on, but my Top 5 New Watches were:

1) High Rise
2) The Double Life of Veronique
3) Captain America Civl War
4) The Man Who Fell to Earth
5) The Nice Guys

I have a lot to say about some awful movies I saw so I need to get those on here because I have to share my thoughts with them or they'll take up brain space.

We doin PTA rankings? No? Well too bad.
I've only seen 4 of them so far but loved em all.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Punch Drunk Love
3. Boogie Nights
4. The Master

Baron Blood. Not a bad Bava film. It was kind of fun, kind of boring at the same time. Still love the rich color these old movies have if nothing else.

Last month I watched The Witch and It Follows thanks to recommendations here on GAF.

The Witch- I thought it deserved every good word said about it here. Best horror movie in a long time; Like, of the century probably.

It Follows - Wasn't impressed or grabbed at all. A kinda garbage movie that shouldn't even be in the same conversations as The Witch imo.

Oh man, PTA rankings...

1. Magnolia
2. Boogie Nights
3. The Master
4. Punch Drunk Love
5. Hard Eight
6. There Will Be Blood
7. Inherent Vice - I tried to watch this twice and couldn't get through it. Which says a lot since he is one of my favorite directors working today.
