We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the mess that DoubleFine is leaving behind? The depth(s) of Dwarf Fortress? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
GAF Thread: Freeware Games
So many free games are out there and so many are just really good games that a large majority of people will never play. From developers with large portfolios of freeware games, to free alphas and betas, to the hundreds and hundreds of entries for game jams such as Seven Day Roguelike, Seven Day FPS, Ludum Dare, and others, to the talented work of Digipen students, there's just an astounding amount of quality free games to play and enjoy that this thread tries to uncover.
You know...
I should probably get around to that best of 2016 results thread
I was thinking of that last month too, but I am not really one to talk in regard to ... time investment, so I figured you'd do it whenever you get around to.
Speaking of time investment:
My May 2017 exercise was: Learning how to play Go.
Absolutely marvellous game and I spent like ... far over 100 hours that month watching tutorials, reading books, playing games and teaching others.
Yeah, that's mainly what's been postponing it. Hoping to get to that this month
Got back into Brigador thanks to the recent update, and it definitely clicked with me this time. The environmental destruction is endlessly satisfying, and the sheer variety of builds you can make can be daunting. The core gameplay is super tight
Tormentor X Punisher feels like a grindhouse top-down Devil Daggers. Very frenetic and survival is measured in seconds
Aww Spark didn't make it. :(
Mystic Melee's Steam page says the release date is July 19 btw.
Monolith is a top down action shooter with procedurally generated elements. Explore a large, abandoned facility in search of incredible power, fighting dangerous foes and gaining new weapons and upgrades as you progress.
This is out tomorrow, I've been playing the press build for a little bit and quite enjoying it, I think it's gonna be $7.99. It's basically roguelite+shmup.
Sprinkle some Gungeon + Isaac + bullet hell in TATE mode.
Even as someone who has been wayyyyyy burned out on dual joystick roguelites, it just feels good to play.
If you mean you're burned out on dual stick shooter roguelikes and not top-down dual stick roguelikes, you should check out Unexplored. It's basically an expanded and evolved action roguelike take on Brogue. One of the year's best gems so far IMO
BREAK ARTS II - PC
Be artistic, be destructive. Smartphone app BREAK ARTS is making its way to PC! This version boasts further improved graphics and a whole new game system.
i love mechs, so steam showed me this a while ago. it used to be a mobile racer, but now its getting jacked up for a PC sequel, and it looks great. your first thought may be IGPX. personally, the racing gives me an f-zero vibe with some light combat elements (based on what ive seen of the mobile version). one of the biggest draws seems to be the customization, though, which is looking really intense. i suggest looking at the dev logs on the community page for insight, especially considering the game is still evolving
Gonna cancel my monthly humble sub - it's been decent, but I'm finding myself with less time as well so it probably isn't quite worth the cost for me.
Still, some decent stuff over the past 3 months or so!
How do you go about preparing an OT for an indie game when nobody knows when it will come out, nobody knows exactly how the mechanics work, most of the story is a mystery, and the developer has gone on record as not liking many of the games you would want to compare it to?
The game is supposedly done. Hope that there will be some warning and prerelease publicity instead of the game just dropping one day?
(To be clear, this is not like The Witness where the mystery is the whole point. This is supposed to be a mechanics- and story-heavy game.)
What game is it? We talking Miegakure?
Miegakure is the only game I can think where nobody knows exactly how the mechanics work
There is a button to rotate by 90 degrees in the planes orthogonal to the fourth dimension, isn't there?
TftQgbH.png
Well, okay, maybe it is not that... lol
Miegakure or Iconoclasts...
Iconoclasts, yes. Knew you'd come up with it.
I've been digging all over for information about the mechanics. You have a wrench and a gun, and the wrench has permanent upgrades and the gun has swappable powers like Metroid's beams. There's some kind of stacking mechanic where different combinations of powers in different orders give you different results? There's also a limited number of slots for equipping a wide selection of collectible buffs and moves.
That's the gist of what I've figured out from reading random tumblrs and tweets, but it seems weird to compile all this as "official" information. Writing it up in a post like this is another thing altogether. Plus I basically don't know what any of the skills are.
I know it's full of navigation puzzles, but I don't know what kind. I know it has an epic story but I don't know what it's about. I know it has difficulty levels but I don't know what they do. I know it has massive boss fights but I don't have any gifs. I suspect there could be deep secrets but how do you even begin to talk about that?
This feels like a game where you should be talking about all the awesome stuff in it as a selling point, except you don't know what any of it specifically is.
I just noticed today that I've finished three games made by Daniel Linssen: Roguelight, Javel-ein and Path of the Rabbit. Didn't even know that's who I was a fan of, hahaha.
I'd like to recommend Path of the Rabbit to you guys. It's a very neat idea for a puzzle. This dev always has these tiny ideas that turn into interesting short length games.
Now check out Windowframe, HopSlide, The Sun & The Moon, Sandstorm, Cognizance, Reap, and Haemo
Windowframe is my personal favorite. It's such a brilliant idea
See, we know the game mechanic of Miegakure:
Imagine there is one dimension removed. The game would be played inside a 3D space (defined by the x, y, z axes) but the real playable part would lie in a section of this space, which would be the (x, z) plane:
Now, you press a button, and you play in the (y, z) plane instead:
Of course, the world would be a lot bigger, but you would be constrained to either the (x, z) or the (y, z) planes.
And you could have a glimpse of the space during the transitions between (x, z) and (y, z) planes: there is a smooth transition between the two planes by rotating the plane (x, z), 1 degree at a time from 0 to 90 degrees, until you get the (y, z) plane.
Miegakure's game mechanic is the same mechanic but with a 4D space (instead of 3D) and 3D sections of this space (instead of 2D planes).
It's one thing to know the mechanics and its technical/theoretical foundations. It's another to understand the mechanics and explain what makes them unique in the context of gameplay and puzles
Not really feeling Drifting Lands, but Monolith is really good. The base combat and bullet hell is really tight, and the different weapons and perks add a lot of variety. The enemy types and the tight rooms gives the shooter action a different feeling compared to other shmups
Love superhot lots, but CE hasn't clicked for me yet.
Playing A-Train PC Classic atm, such a gem of a game. Really a shame its so stupidly expensive.
Drifting Lands - $18.99 (Steam)
this just dropped on June 5th and seems extremely promising. Looking forward to any impressions in this thread.
If you're old enough (or savvy enough to play the free GOG version/open source version) to remember Tyrian, Drifting Lands is basically an updated version of that concept. Lots of stuff to grind out, great soundtrack, and a slower pace (in terms of progression) than an arcade shmup. If you have any experience with the genre at all (being able to get through a few levels of a shmup on one credit), the game won't be difficult at all until perhaps the end of grade 2. Pretty much all my deaths (automatic retreats in this game) come from colliding with an enemy or boss, which is an instant kill in this game (heavy damage with a normal enemy, instant death on a boss). That mechanic feels a bit unfair, but everything else is manageable. The bullet hell gets crazy later on from what I've seen, so there's more emphasis on using your skills to deal with situations more than being skilled at dodging. A lot of the annoying and/or unfair stuff about the game should have been dealt with in early access, but the developers are still supporting it for the time being. They've pushed a few patches out just this week alone.
Did MidBoss just get a big update or something? Is that why it's listed as a new title? I'm positive that game has been around a good while.
Had either been in early access or this was its main major release, after being available elsewhere on smaller sites
That looks kinda cool actually, sadly the price is a little above my impulse range but I'll keep it on the ol' wishlist for its first major sale.
It really is a lot better than what one might think at a first glance. There is so much simulation stuff going on here, from different transportation modes, upgrades, different ages, stock market, owning companies, resource production/management/shipping, plenty customization options, employee happiness, dealing with antiquated euipment, trading and simulated goods values, buildings/very well done scenarios in the "campaign" (which is the reason why I like this game so much, as most sandbox sims dont have good scenarios) and a million different sale stats to keep track off.
But yeah, the price is still ridiculous, even if I'd argue its easily worth it content wise.
That's good to hear, I'm not opposed to pure sandbox games but I tend to need some form of campaign or progression mode to get me into the swing of things.
I still remember when both were posted here, they did come a long way and are looking even better now.
Except it turns out the TLN creator/designer is a racist/sexist gamergate asshole so now it's looking like I won't be buying it. I can usually separate art and artist, but not when a shitty ideology is the basis of the said art's narrative
It really sucks. The Last Night was my most anticipated indie game after Rain World, we finally get a trailer, the game looks amazing, and then we learn all this crazy shit
I'm really disappointed too. I'm no longer buying and the only thing I want to see is what the story plot actually is. He says its "progressive" all the while attacking real life progressives. Super sad if he thinks Anita is some sort of liberal extremism.
