Do you only play a certain genre on a certain platform? Why?

For me I'm only able to play match 3 games on a mobile device, I'm conditioned to think this is the only acceptable way to play those games.

Monster Hunter only on 3ds, or the PSP but I might get a switch for XX - it's essentially a handheld anyway and my friends have always played it on a handheld.

When it comes to RTS I can only do those on PC too, alongside MOBA's because the mouse & KB just makes it easier.

I play fighting games on PC for the best controller flexibility. I'm happy I'm not arbitrarily locked out of using previous gen arcade sticks.

RTS on PC because on console it may as well be a different genre with how limited your ability to micro and multitask properly is. I'll also get shooter games on PC whenever possible for the precision, although it isn't as huge a difference as RTS.

I don't think I'd ever play a drpg on the TV, those are best suited to handhelds. That's about it though

Whatever I play it's always with a controller though, I have enough of mouse and keyboard at work

My schedule makes it really tough to play RPGs on console so I've always preferred playing them on handhelds. Come to my office and you'll almost always see a different handheld on my desk. (Lately BotW has filled that spot. Holy hell, I'm going to be playing this game for a while)

Not a genre but I play all indies on my laptop because they generally come out first on PC and are not demanding. Having all my favorite indies in one place (Steam) is more convenient.

Everything I can play on Xbox One I play on Xbox One, but only because of the controller. It's one of the greatest achievements of mankind.

Nope.
But in general I don't like holding a handheld in front of my face.
And if I liked FPS I'd play it on PC.
Otherwise I switch between consoles and PC just fine.

I like MS asymmetrical sticks for FPS games on consoles. Although M+KB is by far the best option on PC. RTS and CRPGs exclusively on PC.

Shooters on Xbox. Still cant stand the Dualshock for that.

Yeah, same. Xbox controller is perfect for shooters.

Similarly I can't play Splatoon with the joycons. I like can't aim with the right stick for some reason. That problem doesn't exist with the pro controller.

Sort of.

  • I only play competitive FPS games on console because I prefer a controller.
  • I mostly play smaller indie titles* on handheld when possible because I'm more likely to boot it up there than I am when I'm at a desktop or playing on my TV.
  • JRPGs I'm much more likely to play on handheld nowadays as well (despite the previous bullet point). I think it's because I can stop and go at my own pace and it's easy to set down and come back to at any time.

* "smaller indie titles" is purposely vague because it's very dependent on the game. Usually if it's a 2D game or a 3D game that isn't so much focused on a cinematic presentation, they'll fall in to this category (whether they're actually "indie" or not).

I play anything only on switch cause its perfect on it /s

Nah. i mean yes i often prefer big screen but i am there where the games are. There are certain games that are simply horrid on a plattform because of shitty porting or simple not making sense but this are seldom expectations and certianly not a genre

This is me with SRPGS.

Same here. I find sRPGs much more comfortable on a handheld. Not sure why - maybe because stopping and starting is a lot easier. Been also starting to feel the same way with JRPGs too - Bravely Default really spoiled me with how comfortable and easy it was to play in short bursts while doing other things.

As far as my own answer, I prefer playing visual novels on console instead of PC (and even though they're mostly on PC) if I have a choice. For one I like getting trophies for them, and I also like being able to read them on a bigger screen, while on a couch. It feels more comfortable and focused that way.

Genre no. But if I can avoid playing a game on a hendheld, I will. Visual Novels are the only time I'm fine playing on them over something else

I won't play RTS or competitive online FPS on console due to inadequacies of dual analog controls. But otherwise, no restrictions.

Only play RTS and stuff like King's Bounty, which ain't on consoles.

Didn't know RTS was available on consoles.

Bought a PS4 for all of the fighters, but I end up playing them on my PC anyway.
The PS4 will definitely be my Gran Turismo console, so there's that.

RPGs on portable consoles. Fighters on console. RTS/TBS on PC (or portable consoles if possible).

I'd love to play online FPS:s like CoD or Battlefield on portables but that genre is pretty absent there.

I usually play RPG/ Adventure games, but if a game piques Interest I'm open to any genre.

As to why I only play on a PS4........Money.

Shooters on Xbox, Indies on Switch, and JRPGs on anything Nintendo. I can't stand the DS4 for action/shooter games and I usually play whatever's leftover on Nintendo systems.

I can't play shooters without a mouse so, generally speaking, I'm PC only for those.

Strategy games and RPGs historically have better interfaces on the PC as well by virtue of having a shitton of keys to use, so that's my preference as well. Though RPGs nowadays are designed for controllers so that's less of a factor.

I play most online console games on Xbox because I like Xbox Live more than PSN, and have more friends on there. I mostly play playstation for platform exclusives and some single player games that perform better on playstation.

FPS, TPS, any game where the core gameplay is based around precision aiming = only on PC.

Keyboard and mouse or bust for any of those types of games. An absolute chore with a controller.

most of the games I have on PC, I use a controller with anyway, so I don't really care so much about which platform, except that PC offers better performance, so certain games that I know will run better (Dark Souls) I'll get on PC.

Though, if it's a multiplayer FPS, I tend toward the Playstation for that (i don't have an xbone at the moment).

If I played RTS, I would play that on PC though

I've tried giving RTS games a chance on consoles, but the controllers are just too limited.

The game selection is limited as well.

Anything that requires precise aiming, I'll only play on PC. Shooters (1st and 3rd person) mostly.

Other than that, I'm not too picky.

I prefer 2D games in general on PC as it means I can use a Sega Saturn pad thanks to an adaptor. This goes double for fighters as in addition to using that pad I like having free online multiplayer as even though I don't play online that much I like having the option to without worrying about if I'll play it enough to get value out a subscription.

Anything else the platform doesn't matter to me.

Edit: Oh yes I prefer Souls games on PC as well, again for free access to online so I can get other players messages.

Shooters on PC and Xbox. JRPG'S on Playstation. I play shooters on those because the Xbox One controller is most comfortable for shooters. For JRPG'S it is because that is where they are mostly at on Playstation.

The only FPSes on console I've ever been able to even play, were all made by Bungie. There's some frustration even there, but they seem to really understand how to make FPS on a controller feel right.

I'd say RTS too (obviously) but there's been RTS-adjacent games like Brutal Legend that I really liked.
