Gamasutra.
Really long official thread this month.

The piece I put together for Gamasutra is now up.
Direct link to Gamasutra story about March 2009 NPD data.

A couple of things that may be of interest:

* Top 20 games were all 100,000 or more.
* Sales figure for #11, Guitar Hero: Metallica.
* Nintendo DSi sales were reported in the Nintendo DS results for March 2009.
* Per-month software unit sales figures given in the graph on last page for 2008 and 2009.

I love your analysis thingys JVM, and I will definitely read this tomorrow morning with my bowl o' cereal. :D

That was a good read, its going to probably be quoted in many blogs and video game sites this week pronouncing the death of the Wii though.

Quick question, you said "We are not completely convinced of this explanation" when speaking about the Easter issue.

Since I guess the thinking is more Wii software sells during "holidays" would this not explain less software being sold, or because the Wii userbase is so large based on the previous month we should be seeing more software sales regardless? And with that said, would a large amount of software sold in next months NPD validate the Easter excuse?

Sorry for the quick answer, but I'm going to bed. It's been a long weekend.

Last year Frazier's comments regarding Easter were along the following: since Easter switched months from 2007 to 2008, the month without Easter in 2008 saw a drop in handheld hardware and software sales.

Now this year it's an explanation for a drop in the industry overall, with no further explanation other than "our analysis shows" that Easter is a big deal.

I think that SSBB is a much bigger deal here. It was 2.7 million units of software and $120 million by itself, according to sources. That's the same size as the Easter difference cited by NPD.

If you guys find mistakes, or things that I should fix, leave them here. I'll get to them sometime in the morning.

As always, thanks.

Major Error Alert!

The Nintendo DSi launched on midnight of the last day of the March 2009 reporting period. According to Mr. Michael Pachter, analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, the Nintendo DS figures reported by the NPD Group included 58,000 units of the Nintendo DSi from those midnight sales.

According to Nintendo, the updated handheld went on to sell 435,000 systems during its first week on sale.

If one excludes the Nintendo DSi from the sales figures for the Nintendo DS, the system only sold 101,000 systems during March 2009.

That would be the weakest showing for the Nintendo DS since January 2008, when the system suffered widespread shortages after extraordinary December 2007 sales.

According to the NPD Group sales of the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DS (i.e. the Nintendo DS Lite) will be reported together.

Nintendo DSi didnt launch during march NPD

Nintendo DSi didnt launch during march NPD
It launched on Sunday following, and NPD recorded 58,000 units at midnight sales, which it apparently included in the sales figures for the March 2009 report (according to Mr. Pachter).

Edit: If you're referring to the time, then I'll clarify the time mentioned.

K well you still confused me with this

If one excludes the Nintendo DSi from the sales figures for the Nintendo DS, the system only sold 101,000 systems during March 2009.

The Nintendo DS sold 505,000 Units during March NPD
Then I guess the DSi sold 58,000

Yep, that's right, and the wording could be more clear. I'll edit.

Fixed and fixed and fixed, I hope.

I'm still here. Anything else?

Also, while I'm waiting, I'm curious to know if you guys think this means donny should recompute the rankings in the hardware prediction thread? After all, I don't actually think anyone was making predictions for Nintendo DS + Nintendo DSi midnight sales. :D

(Note: I have no idea how it would change my ranking. I simply bring it up because it's an interesting twist...)

While M-rated software can make a tremendous amount of money (the Halo trilogy, for example) the writing is on the wall right now for publishers and developers: there is a limited audience for these games on the Wii.

RE4. RE:UC. CoD:WaW.

I would add No More Heroes, but it was a relative sales success (for the publisher and developer), not an absolute sales success.

A really good predictor would've taken into account any NPD changes and predicted accordingly. :D

Fixed fixed fixed. The first one, btw, was a section added after the article was in the system (stuff added to help work around the adverts on Gamasutra's layout, oy). OpenOffice would have told me about that one. The others...probably not.

Also, I found another while I was looking, right after "Howver". You missed it. ;^)

I found this interesting...

In other data released by the NPD Group, MLB '09: The Show for the PSP took #8 on the top handheld software list for the month. That is the first PSP game to break into the top 10 handheld games chart in at least half a year.

That means that not a single PSP game has sold more than at the very minimum the DS top 10 for the past 6 months.

Microsoft had $220 million in third-party software sales last year during March 2008. In March 2009, its third-party software sales were only $185 million, a drop of 16%.

This is in line with the drop in all software collectively. Combined with what one presumes are stronger first-party software sales for the month (on the back of Halo Wars and Halo 3, both in the top 20) it seems natural to conclude that Microsoft's software sales overall were up year-on-year.
Found this interesting

Moreover, Wedbush Morgan's Mr. Pachter commented that, taking the difference of Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros. Brawl sales into account, it appears that Wii software sales were flat year-on-year. This is particularly striking because, as he notes, the system's installed base has more than doubled in the last 12 months.
So basically ignoring Wii Fit and SSBB Wii software sold pretty much the same amount as last year.

I'm going to draw a line, perhaps imaginary (:D ) between those games and DR, HotD. Simply, RE and CoD are much bigger names. I tried to qualify that in the last paragraph in that section, that you need to be a big franchise or a popular genre (and, I should have added, both would be great) that guarantees solid sales. (E.g. NASCAR + Kart = sales.)

I don't think DR or HotD meet those criteria. Nor does MadWorld.

Now, Chinatown Wars...ok, that's a tougher nut.

PS3 version a top selling game for the month.

Charting on PS2 in the top 20, over 100k.

Only PSP platform game to be in the handheld top 10.

It's been clear for a while that the PSP situation in the US has been pretty dire. The hardware numbers are consistent with a system that's dying.

We'll see what Sony has at E3 to keep dying from becoming dead.

kk going back to this

RESIDENT EVIL 5* (360) 938K
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 2K9 (360) 205K
Guitar Hero: Metallica (360) 169K
We know this

Call of Duty: World at War (360) 150K
Street Fighter IV (360) 140K
Just estimating these so its debatable

Total = 1,602,000

If the average game price was...
55$=~88 Million in revenue

Then Third Party software on the 360 outside of what we see on the charts is around 97,000,000.

You realize that you're doing the "exceptions" thing that is done a lot for Nintendo consoles, right?

* Nintendo games don't count
* Known franchises don't count
* Square Enix games don't count
* Music games don't count

etc.

If you're going to try to say "Mature rated games don't sell on the Wii," then you can't come back to say "except for these games." If some M-rated games can make it on the Wii, then other M-rated games can make it on the Wii. I completely agree that T and below games have a much better chance of selling on the Wii (The Conduit is T, for reference), but that's sort of a "duh" statement. Just like PG-13 movies have a wider possible audience than R-rated movies, T and below games have a wider possible audience than M-rated games. Since the Wii has a very wide audience, ... That doesn't mean that publishers should avoid M-rated games altogether on the Wii, though. I have decent hopes for Silent Hill Wii, for example (the flashlight got my interest, and the psycho stuff intrigues me).

Just so I know where you're coming from, you think that there isn't a distinction to be made between big names like RE and CoD and smaller names like DR and HotD?

Just asking. I'll be back in the morning when I'm more coherent.

You're trying to say there's a limited audience for M-rated games on the Wii. From the context, I'm interpreting that as being well under 500K in sales and probably more like under 200K. I'm trying to say that if some games can break the "limited" barrier, then others can, too. I do not believe that some games failed to break the "limited" barrier just because they were M-rated on a Nintendo console. Is RE generally a more popular series than DR? Sure. DR Wii has its own whole set of problems, though, that have just about nothing to do with it being M-rated. HotD actually did pretty well in its first month for the series and light-gun games in general. Looking at other M-rated Wii games, do you think you might be able to come up with other reasons that they didn't sell just so great? ;)

I'm completely willing to say that everything else being equal (advertising, budget, IP, online, etc.), an M-rated title could sell better on 360 in the U.S. than Wii, right now. However that doesn't equate to the Wii not being able to sell M-rated games.

Viva Pinata and Kameo sold over 1M on the X360 yet I don't see anyone (sane) waving that about as evidence that there's a strong market for adult-gameplay/kid-visual games on the X360. It's completely possible to have rare exceptions to the rule and the ones you're bandying about are pretty easy to hit with qualifiers (and let's not pretend that adding qualifiers is the sole domain of the "anti-Wii" boogeymen that certain insane posters seem to froth over).

You'd have more of a point (and you'd do a better job with your sexual advances towards jvm) if the three games you listed were all rated well. Since you have so much free time you should check to see what other M-rated titles launched at the same time as your four examples, because I suspect there'll be a distinct lack of strong competition during those releases, meaning that the "M-attracted" audience is actually very small, but typically has few choices.

1) Not in the U.S.
2) Kameo was made less kiddy from its GameCube form for 360 release. Did you see the Christmas outfit for Kameo?
3) A good portion of Viva Pinata's 1 million were console bundles.

See above as to why anyone "(sane)" wouldn't have a reason to use those two as examples for long. :lol

GAF, see if you can wrap your head around this bomba:
At major North American electronics retailer *cough*, in the time period between the launch of Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop and right now, Chop Till You Drop has been outsold by the Platinum Hits version of Dead Rising for the Xbox 360. You read that right. Unit sales from February 27th, 2009 to this very moment are higher for the 3 year old 360 game than the new Wii game.

Viva Pinata sold over 1m? I thought both games on the 360 were sub par in sales which is one of the reasons they attempted the series on the DS

I get what Donny is saying though, nobody is saying the Wii will sell better than the 360 M rated games, but when an M or T rated game does well on Wii it usually has a qualifier attached to it that makes it "not count" in the grand discussion of whether a game/genre can come to the Wii by many analysts

Good, thats what Capcom deserves for bringing a game that was rushed and riddled with problems and only selling point is RE4 Wii controls

The Wii release and Dead Rising 2 announcement (PS360-only) brought more attention to the series, and with the 360 version being generally considered the far superior version, half the price of the Wii edition, and the only one of the two systems known to be getting the eventual sequel, most people with access to a 360 and Wii would choose the 360 version.

How's that?

Funny, whenever REUC's "success" is tossed around it's always in terms of WW sales. Same usually goes for RE4.

Less kiddy doesn't mean non-kiddy. The game is still a colorful candyland. But go ahead, whip out those qualifications like they'd have any serious effect on the overall sales!

And any time a M or T rated game does poorly it has a whole pile of reasons attached to why it failed. Or didn't fail, we'll all be proven wrong when it sells another 100k (at <50% the revenue to publishers).
Uh literally Viva Pinata and Kameo are the ONLY evidence and Viva Pinata had a massive marketing budget along with being a pack-in in Europe.
I didn't toss in UNO but since we're going to pull the "literally" card I guess I have to.

How about "so why didn't those discriminating M-buying Wii customers buy any other, better M-rated titles"? Where are the 500k people that (eventually) bought COD5? Where's the uptick in sales for Deadly Creatures, HOTD, Tenchu, or Madworld?

Well if you are using COD4 DS as an example then the other games have not been out long enough since it took more than 1yr to get to that 500k from its low launch month

It would have to be that way or all 500k would have flocked to GTA CW instead of 1/5th

Very nice feature Jay, always appreciated as usual ! This month NPD thread was really worth a bunch of popcorn :)

More! Give me more!

DELICIOUS!
What kind of point are you trying to make here?
