NINTENDO DOWNLOAD: SUMMER'S OFF TO A SIZZLING START WITH NEW GAME DOWNLOADS FOR NINTENDO SYSTEMS

May 31, 2010

Temperatures aren't the only thing heating up this season as Nintendo celebrates the unofficial onset of summer with another round of red-hot game downloads. May has been an especially big month for the Nintendo DSiWare™ service, with notable recent releases such as Photo Dojo™, Frogger Returns and Metal Torrent™. This week's additions keep the momentum going strong with awesome hand-held games like X-Scape™ and Hero of Sparta. X-Scape is developed by Q Games, the same team that created Trajectile™ and STARSHIP DEFENSE™. (Also, remember that Photo Dojo™ is available for zero Nintendo DSi Points™ through June 10. The game will require 200 Nintendo DSi Points for download as of June 11.) Of course, Wii™ owners have plenty to be excited about too: New offerings include a Ben 10 Alien Force adventure for the WiiWare™ service and the Virtual Console™ debut of a classic cowboy shooter from the Super NES™ era.

It's also time to announce a new addition to the "Big Name Games" section of the WarioWare™: D.I.Y. series, which features downloadable microgames from some of the industry's most talented figures. Created by Nintendo Power™ magazine staffer Steve Thomason, this week's featured game, Revenge, puts an unusual spin on familiar characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. New "Big Name Games" will be added every Monday through July 26, all available to download for zero Nintendo DSi Points to anyone with broadband Internet access and a copy of either WarioWare: D.I.Y. for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems or WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase software for the WiiWare service. Visit the Nintendo Channel on your Wii system today to learn more about these games.

Good stuff. Will happily buy both :D See, now this is a good update NOA. Keep it up!

Updated the OP - thanks, Shard.

And, yes, I know that technically today's update is still May, but last-day-of-the-month updates will get lost by tomorrow's Japanese update if I drop them in the May thread. I'll cross-post just to catch everyone, though.

I'm very interested in X-Scape. Will check it out. Hopefully ROTOZOA will be coming soon as well.

I'm still disappointed by the lack of Yoshi's Island for Super Mario Galaxy 2 week.

Dear MediaGAFfers: Please ask all/any NOA folks why VC has crawled to a stop multiple times this year. Bring up Yoshi's Island.

Holy snaps. I'm stuck at home cause the exterminators are here and have been playing art style cubello, and I finally beat it today (all 36 stages)! This is actually the first art style game I've managed to beat -- and I've had it since its release date. Now on to either light trax or Orbient.

People should download X-Scape. It's the sequel to the Japan-only game X for the GameBoy, the first game Argonaut Software did for Nintendo...a year BEFORE StarFox.

If the name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps the music will.

Way ahead of ya, already got it. So far it's great! Feels like a bit like Starfox mixed with Metroid (in terms of the way you sometimes have to backtrack to get to a different planet)

I love the game's visual style as well and there's some nice banter coming from your robot partner. Also the music is nice and eerie, also has an awesome remix of the tunnel music (the one from SSBB!)

How different is this from the original game? I know this game takes place 20 years after the original but I'd like to know how the gameplay setup was different in the original!

Did it have the Metroid style navigation or the sidequests? I'd love to see the original game get released outside of Japan someday!

Gameplay in the original was similar, but progression was slightly different. You carried out missions in each stage by heading to the radar station (which was also a chance to refuel/resupply), but missions were given sequentially. Your tank (VIXIV) also had the ability to fly by running at high speed on pyramid shaped hills. There were bombing runs where you had to drop a bomb in the main shaft a la A New Hope. Pretty amazing they made such a solid 3D game for GB in its time.

X-Scape is awesome.

Just reposing this as we've switched over to a new month. And it's graphically really intriguing. It's like what I'd imagine a Tron homage game to look like, and I can't seem to put my hand on this, but DSi can manage some awesome affects.

There's almost no aliasing too.

Grrr, I do hope it gets an English release some day. Sounds awesome!

Forgot to say that the Emperor was your Commander from the previous game who sort of acted like a Tutorial guide and also gave you objectives.

It's like General Pepper making a heel face turn.

I'm loving this title so far. It's like a full-fledged retail title instead of an "app".

I just noticed that Nintendo published Faxanadu in NA (and EU). Does that (hopefully) mean that Nintendo has the licensing rights to the game, and therefore make it easier to put on the VC? Or is it still held by Hudson?

I've hoped for Faxanadu to appear on VC for years now. But I've pretty much given up hope. I'm sure it's more than possible, but they just don't seem to care about it.

I'll be picking up X-Scape tonight. Pretty excited for it, though I never played the original.

Well, I haven’t given up hope. I mean there is no reason it shouldn’t eventually be on the VC. Even if the licensing is still held by Hudson, it’s not like they haven’t released a fuck load of games already.

Fixed :D

Also, those laser tail enemies. They're also in Starfox Command :D Were they in the original Gameboy X, or is it a Starfox Command reference?
I don't recall having seen them. And I haven't quite played Star Fox Command.

Argh. Double post errors.

Edit: I'll just take this oppotunity to say how much the infected coins mission both irritates and endears me.

I had extra points and downloaded Robocalypse: Beaver Defense. It has some nice ideas for the Tower Defense genre. They made a DS game called just Robocalypse that was an RTS game, and it got pretty good reviews (haven't played it). This one is straight-up tower defense but has some RTS elements, which I thought was neat. You have a Hero unit that you can move around RTS style and it attacks enemies. And there are other units that seem to repair damaged towers. Of course, there's the traditional TD gameplay of setting up mazes of towers to slow the enemy. There's no fixed spots, at least in the first few levels. You set them up anywhere and make mazes. Controls and interface work well, and the story is absurdly amusing too, though some scenes strangely have no sound. Seems like an enjoyable TD game and a good deal for 600 points. I don't think there are a lot of traditional TD games for WiiWare. My Life as a Darklord is great, but definitely not a conventional game, and I haven't tried those Final Fantasy R1 or whatever games, which are more expensive. So this is a good option if you're looking for a somewhat traditional TD game with some neat ideas.

Hmmm, not sure what to think about X-Scape.
The visual style is pretty damn cool and minimalist, but there's something about that controls that just feels terrible to me. I've tried both the d-pad and touch screen implementations, but both feel horribly sluggish. This isn't helped by the fact that the giant blobs you shoot are also as slow as molasses.

I actually really liked the touch screen controls in Star Fox Command.
But this... the touch screen feels sluggish and awkward, whereas the d-pad controls feel more comfortable but run even slower.

Perhaps I just need to give it more time. I don't usually struggle just to navigate and aim, however. Not with these kinds of games.

The Ben 10..is fun..nothing fancy, reminds me of SNES game..2D gameplay of look for the card to open the door, use/alternate powers to move on..etc..

The controls take a while to get used to. But personally I invert my why axis ad it helps during flight.

Funny thing is I switched back to stylus for a while to help me with
those torrent missions
but then later switched back to using control pad and found out I did much better with the latter. They key is letting your eyes lead.

everyone should download "Wild Guns". It's the best shooter on the SNES.
it's almost perfect. 2 player mode, stunning graphics, deep gameplay(for a shooter, great sound(track), completly destroyable surroundings

I wish I could figure out how to reliably throw the lasso in the game. (Ok, I actually have the cartridge but still, it's a good game.) BTW, is this just the home version of Blood Bros?

There's targeting aid when in touch screen mode so that helps a bit for the land battles.
I think the vertical aiming is done automatically provided you line your sights horizintally.

Virtual Console is pretty much done, isn't it?

My guess is we're on the typical schedule of garbage releases running up until E3 -- > an E3 announcement of a special VC/DSiWare game or two -- > A good post-E3 month of VC/DSiWare -- > back to crap releases

Unless they're waiting to announce the new portable VC at E3 at which point I will be spending hundreds of dollars on old Game Boy games post E3. Alas, I don't think that is in Nintendo's plans.

I hope we don't get another arbitrary delay with ROTOZOA like we did with some of the previous ArtStyle titles. Anyway, do we know much about this Flametail game?

Game Boy would be awesome on VC.

The Virtual Console never took off and entirely because of Nintendo's handling of the feature and it will die for the very same reasons.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they wouldn't bother with this feature next gen.

got around to downloading a few dsiware games today.

X-whatever. it's pretty fun. i know Q did it, but i could swear skip did some of the presentation. that chatty robot is just way too similar to the recycle-bot in park patrol.

Glow Artisan. doesn't really seem award worthy. maybe it hasn't gotten to the good stuff yet, maybe i'm not in the mood, but its definitely no Denki Blocks!

Mighty Flip Champs. i lied. i downloaded this ages ago, but didnt give it the time it deserves. its good_more good than glow artisan_ and i like the way it bends my mind. Wayforward is an awesome developer. reminds me that i should track down a copy of Duck Amuck.

Looksley's Line Up will be released as Tales in a Box: Hidden Shapes in Europe. I prefer this title.

And from the Shi'nen twitter: "Jett Rocket" for WiiWare will be available for download on June 28th in the US, July 2nd in the EU for 1000 Wii Points.
