Reposting my impressions of SteamWorld Tower defense

Just completed first few levels of this game.

Unique take on tower defense game built for the DS specifically, so there's some touch features like picking up coins left by dead humans. I like the idea that the turrets don't last forever and collateral damage from exploding humans, and hostile NPC will slowly drain hp away. It makes for a more hectic game. And requires constant attention. I'm getting my butt kicked on Map2 already on normal difficulty.

I like the use of the minimap up top. Very simple, but effective.

Only major negatives thus far is the grating soundtrack. Really I think they had 1 track for the whole thing? Maybe there's more later.

Soul of Darkness - DSiWare trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ0Bx8w5PKQ

Doesn't look half bad, but I've been shying away from DSiWare lately because I don't feel like deleting the stuff I have on my system now.
Same feeling here. I don't trust Gameloft, and that's a ludicrously transparent copy of Castlevania, but it looks like there are some interesting set pieces.

I guess I'll let somebody else take the fall and decide later.

I'll have to look 'em up. Thanks.
That thread got stupid after a bit, and my eyes began to glaze over.

I am really excited about this game. :D Hopefully it's coming out soon.

I'm torn on NightSky. I loved the Knytt games, thought Saira was disappointing, and was never a big fan of Within a Deep Forest, which is what this most resembles.

But it's gorgeous, Nifflas really has a way with environments.

Wow Soul of Darkness looks sick. I'm such a Castlevania whore I am buying this now!

How come I never ever heard of this game? This will so sell 2 copies...

EDIT: I bought Soul of Darkness so here are my impressions:

It's really good. Graphics and animation isn't up to par with DS's Castlevanias but the controls is pretty much there and the gameplay is actually very nice and straightforward. Music does the job. For 500 points its really nice. (unless you really don't like Metroidvanias of course).

So far the gameplay is interesting, ennemies have nice attacks and it's harder than Dawn of Sorrow and most of Portrait of Ruin. The scenery is nice and diverse and there's always stuff happening when you don't really expect it (like that huge hand at the beginning of the game). Definetely a Castlevania rip off but I wanted another game like that so they got me.

There's a cool little upgrade system replacing the leveling and I didn't get stylus crap so far. (well, it's not like I am far into the game yet). More impressions will come later but my first impression really is surprising. I wouldn't even call this a "poor man Castlevania", it's already better than that.

ditto.

it's like Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet met Palluriko, with a deep moody ambience altogether. which is all good stuff in my book.

So hey - Target Toss Pro: Lawn Darts was announced a few weeks back (largely unnoticed by GAF of course). Here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HILBLimE2d4

For full disclosure, yes, I worked on the game. I know a couple people around here enjoyed Target Toss Pro: Bags, so I hope you'll appreciate the follow up as well.

ALSO - The trailer says it's available now, but it's not really. It's coming soon.

Watching the trailer, it might have been better to have something on the bottom of the screen telling you how many points you got instead of darkening the screen and blocking the shot to tell the score. Darts is something that you kind of like to admire the shot some after you make it. That may be a personal thing, though.

Yeah - it can get busy when you make a good shot - but there are replays as well. It's an arcade conversion of a game that is mostly positioned to sit along side Golden Tee at a local bar. There's voiceover, audio and full screen feedback for a good shot. It's not a subtle, sit back and revel at your shot type of thing I suppose. But I see what you're saying and definitely appreciate that you watched it and commented :-). We're in submission now and should have a launch date shortly.

This is my third WiiWare title, behind Target Toss Pro: Bags and Carnival King - both also arcade conversions by n-Space for Incredible Technologies.

You should remove the "WIIWARE DEMOS" category. It just won't return, it was completely removed :/

Yeah, I've pretty much given up hope there so it will be pulled from next month. I thought they might decide to use any data gathered from the test run to implement it mid-gen, but I think it's just going to filter into whatever they do with the successor to the Wii.

Has anyone had a chance to play the Pearl Harbor Trilogy game? I'm wondering if it's a decent flight game like Crimson Skies or Ace Combat.

EU gets Shadow of the Ninja this Friday. That's two weeks of virtual console goodness in-a-row! Well, for them anyways.

Strange thing is, it's a Hanabi Festival game with a Hanabi Festival price. 600 points. It's strange because the game was released in Europe as Blue Shadow, and should have cost the usual 500 points. Probably because the original Euro release was by Taito, who presumably no longer have the rights for it - it was made and distributed by Natsume in the rest of the world.

But it's not a big deal, since the game is very, very good and definitely worth the price. I played it a lot on the NES, especially in two-player co-op, which was extremely cool back then. Hard as nails. I never completed it properly, and had to cheat with a Game Genie to take down the last boss. Even then it was hard!

I have a backlog on WiiWare/VC, so I'm holding off any WiiWare purchases for now. NintendoLife gave it an 8/10, though. They're usually pretty reliable, in my experience.

So, interested in Soul of Darkness? Here's the thread.

Hey, DSiWare developers! Stop worrying about coming up with unique graphical approaches and odd little puzzle games. If you really want to generate discussion, clone the graphics and music of a popular series and slap them on top of God of War mechanics!

I liked it, but it's disheartening that SoD (lol) has an official thread and Xscape doesn't. Just sayin'.

Given how popular the Hudson aquarium game was and how, well... how much better Nintendo are at actually developing things, it was sorta a no brainer.
It's developed by Paon though, I wouldn't say they're a better developer than Hudsonsoft. Paon's games are pretty much consistently average while Hudson's games range anywhere from great to lousy.

Dumb question, but how do you find demos on Wiiware?
I looked around the wii store channel but I couldn't find anything.

Dumb question here -- got new internet service with currently installed security that doesn't allow DSi to connect -- if I buy the Nintendo WiFi dongle/usb stick and use it in a laptop that uses the secured WiFi, will I be able to download DSiWare?

Did anyone already download and play the Steamworld Tower Defense game?

It's really cool but imho it's kinda hard. I tried the 6th. level (I think) and it's not really possible :(

What about the security doesn't allow it to connect? But the answer is yes, if your laptop can connect then the USB adapter will allow it to connect through it. Check my my other comment below.

Is there any chance to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi dongle with Windows 7 64-bit?

It barely works with Vista (Vista SP2 broke it for me), so not a chance. What you might be able to do if you have the appropriate version of Windows 7 is to run XP Mode and set it up via that. It's a piece of shit overall though so don't expect it to work for anything other than XP. I actually created an XP dual-boot just to be able to use my Wii with an asshole university network.

Thanks for that tip, but it fails and says to put the USB dongle into another port...

Did you install the integrated features on the XP machine and did you activate the dongle to be used in the XP machine? I don't think this works with the XP Mode in W7 but with full starting the XP machine via Virtual PC. Then on the top activate the Dongle to be ready @ XP. It works for all of my USB devices though I don't have a WiFi Dongle.

Wireless Access Point ftw :) They are dirt cheap btw!

man i wish nintendo released a new and better wifi connector. the old one is shit.
maybe they'll make a new one when the 3DS comes out.

Maybe they'll make the 3DS compatible with routers to a degree the DS wishes it could have ;) :lol

I don't have that Virtual PC thing - it's for the professional version only, I believe. I only set the compatibility to XP.
