TOKYO, April 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the cumulative sales of the PlayStation(R)3 (PS3(R)) computer entertainment system reached a milestone of 50 million units(1) worldwide, as of March 29, 2011. SCE also announced that PlayStation(R)Move sales surpassed 8 million units(1) worldwide as of April 3, demonstrating continued growth and momentum of the PS3 platform.

The PS3 system, equipped with future proof cutting-edge technologies including the powerful Cell Broadband Engine(TM) and RSX(R) processors as well as the Blu-ray disc(TM) (BD) player and HDMI, has delivered users with high-definition and high quality entertainment experiences since its launch in November 2006. The PS3 system continues to evolve and enhance the user experience through new features and services delivered via software updates.

Concurrently with the introduction of PS3, SCE launched the PlayStation(R)Network service which now has more than 75 million registered accounts and operates in 59 countries and regions(2) around the world. PlayStation Network supports free community-centric online game play and communication tools such as PlayStation(R)Home(3), and offers vast downloadable digital content, including games, movies and TV shows, through PlayStation(R)Store. Downloadable digital content on PlayStation Store currently totals 105,988 worldwide. In September 2009, SCE launched the new slimmer and lighter PS3 system with a new form factor and less power consumption that has been well received by users around the world.

To further expand entertainment experiences only possible on PS3, stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D(TM) features were introduced to the system via a free system software update(4) in April and September 2010, respectively. The feature enables users to enjoy stunningly realistic stereoscopic 3D on their PS3 system by simply connecting it to a 3D-compatible TV such as a 3D "BRAVIA" TV using an HDMI cable. The number of stereoscopic 3D software titles has reached 89 as of April 1, 2011.

SCE launched PlayStation Move in September 2010 for North America, Europe/PAL territories and in Asia, and in October 2010 for Japan to deliver a new entertainment experience across all categories of games, from casual to core. The PlayStation Move motion controller is used in combination with the PlayStation(R)Eye camera to detect the precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space of the user, thereby allowing users to intuitively play as if they are within the game. The number of PlayStation Move supported/dedicated software titles has reached 155 as of March 24, 2011, including titles such as Sports Champions, SingStar Dance and Killzone 3(5). PlayStation Move continues to expand new game play with variety of upcoming new PlayStation Move titles for 2011, including SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs(6).

With strong support from 3rd party developers and publishers worldwide, PS3 features a vast library of more than 2,128 software titles, with more than 480 million units sold worldwide(7). Recently released blockbuster franchise titles from first party studios include Grand Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet2 and Killzone 3.

SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment.

The 50 million is called "Cumulative sales" and the 8 million move is marked as a "sell-in number".

So yeah, most likely shipped, but I'll let the gurus figure that out/ explain it.

What does that mean?

manufacturers' efforts to persuade retailers to distribute and stock their products. For example, if the XYZ Company wants to convince a retailer to feature its product on the store's shelf, it might offer special discounts or promotions that compare more favorably than its competitors.

So Sony shipped >2.1 million PS3s this quarter. Look like they'll fall short of 15 million shipped for the FY by several hundred thousands units.

Love to get a real picture of sold through to consumer numbers on Move. Unless Europe is really pulling heavy numbers we aren't seeing, 8 million shipped seems a little bit over kill.

Killzone 3, and soon Socom 4 and other hardcore games are supporting Move.

True I guess, but I couldn't imagine a hardcore gamer using MOVE on those games for longer than 5 min

Should pass the 360 shipped number in a couple of quarters.

Pretty surprised they manage to even ship 8m move "controllers". Software doesn't appear to sell in NA, EU or Japan.

The PS3 only began gaining on the X360 when the Slim launched. You must've been listening to some mighty fools.

sony really averted complete and total disaster, but i think 2012 and most of 2013 are going to be pretty brutal unless the ngp is successful. then those years will only be kinda brutal.

I actually played KZ3 with move from start to finished and really enjoyed the move controller, you'd be surprised how many people feel the same way.

Why do you think that, its in 2012 that the PS3 will be priced around $200, and many experts have said and the historical sales of consoles have always shown that when a console is priced at $200 is when it starts to sell a lot.

I know..

Doesn't take a genius to look at the last year or so of shipment info to figure out that it is (probably) going to happen though.

So it should reach around 75 million by the time the PS4 is released given a price cut. Thats pretty good, I'm sure its not what Sony would have liked at the beginning of this generation but its a modest 'loss'

Yeah thinking the same way, they will not surpass the 80 millions mark.

just because of the developers they have available. they're blowing their load this year and early next year with a huge amount of ps3 and ngp games from their best developers, and won't be ready with something like this again for another two years. this will especially be a problem if microsoft and nintendo both launch systems in 2012.

I don't know. The PS3 is selling decently in Japan and Europe. And, most importantly, the PS3 has been up YOY in the US, despite it still being $299. When the PS3 drop to $249 or less (probably by fall), I see the PS3 selling very well in 2012.

Out of all three motion gaming options- the Move has come through with the most variety and fun since its' launch. Really hope they can maintain the momentum of titles.

I don´t think that Microsoft will launch a new console in 2012 maybe in 2013.

I think Sony and Microsoft will end up launching their new console around the same time frame, which will be interesting to watch.

2010 might not have been a stellar year as far as the line up but Heavy Rain, God of War III, ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5 and (LBP2 getting delayed) were all fun and brought new challenges for their successor.. I'm sure they'll have something: The Last Guardian, the leaked Syphon Filter info suggests something.., God of War IV, new title from Quantic Dreams, etc.

Just wait until E3 maybe?

And I hope it's in the fall of 2013.

This maybe true, like dreamcast and Ps2, Microsoft will launch their console in 2013 and Sony will launch theirs in 2014.
