‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ clings to second place despite a 61% drop in sales, while ‘Saint’s Row: The Third’, up from No4 to No3 (-40%) swaps places with ‘Skyrim’ (-43%) even though both titles are down by similar amounts. ‘FIFA 11’ (+22%) and ‘Just Dance 3’ (+22%) are the only Top 10 titles to increase sales this week with EA’s Christmas football favourite a non-mover at No5 and Ubisoft’s popular dancing sequel up 2 places to No8. The new releases are coming thick and fast, but nothing on the scale of last week’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ with ‘WWE 12’ the highest new entry at No6 (22% up on THQ’s 2011 title), one place ahead of another chart debutant - Nintendo’s ‘Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call’ new at No7.

The Top 10 is rounded off by ‘Battlefield 3’ (-4%) down one place to No9 and ‘Super Mario 3D Land’ (-12%), also down one place, to No10. ‘Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo’ (+85%) jumps from No18 to No12, boosted by a big ‘Black Friday’ promotion, while ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (+82%) also shoots up the charts, climbing from No20 to No14 with the help of the new blue Wii hardware bundle. The only other new release to make the Top 40 is Warner’s ‘Lord of the Rings: War in the North’ at No38.

Seems like Zelda is doing well in Europe... except in the UK.

In the UK the Wii seems to be just a dancing game console.

Well done Professor!

It is official. The UK is the worst gaming market. All people buy here are stupid dancing games, COD and FIFA. Bunch of fucking monkeys.

Pleasantly surprised to see Saints Row 3 selling so well. I thought it'd flop due to the release date, never in a million years would I have guessed that it'd be outselling both Assassin's Creed and Skyrim. Impressive.

Gotta be word-of-mouth, I reckon. I'm yet to meet someone that played the game and didn't come away raving about it, myself included. I talked 3 people into buying a copy and I'm sure they will continue the cycle.

That's a strong second week for AC:R. I'm glad to see that actually because while it takes no chances and is a very safe sequel I think it's the best in the series so far taken on its own.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Yeah, there's a mistake with Saints row's number, consider it unreliable. It's based on SR2 first week, which was based off PES first week, which was based off FIFA first week ... something went wrong somewhere.

It's sad that Rayman bombed this hard. The demo is fantastic, but that release date was just extremely unfortunate. Sucks for Ubisoft and Ancel, but it probably means I'll be picking it up dirt cheap soon.

If the Skyrim <117K number from last week is close to right and the FIFA number is right, then that means that Saints Row and Skyrim should both be right around 68K-72K

the problem for the game is that public perception of such a game, would expect it for xbla, not full price retail

I'm guilty of this, played the demo with my little sister and cousin and loved the crap out of it, and thought it'd be a nice cheap PSN title to pick up and boy did i wince when i found out it was a full priced retail game.

The problem is the Skyrim <117k number from last week was based off it's position in relation to the incorrect Saints Row number. I double checked FIFA, AC, and Battlefield and they should be right (within a few percent margin of rounding error at least). I'll just use those for this week.

Using FIFA this week, these are last week sales
Saints Row >113K
Skyrim >119K

Rayman a flop? It's a 2D platform. It would have never opened as Skyrim or Assassin's Creed. And it's not Mario. Wait some months, and see how it will perform on Wii and 3DS.

I recalibarated FIFA numbers to the latest October numbers to cut down some of the rounding errors that had accumalated since September, but the difference is minor. Don't take these numbers as exact as they're based off of rounded numbers and percentages.

What a terrible and inappropriate generalization to make, given the variety in the top 20.

Rayman is a dead ip launching in the NSMB window without the equivalent ad campaign, launching against Ubi's own 10 million a year AC franchise. It will probably do better when discounted.

I hope you're joking. What you just listed accounts for a tiny fraction of the top 40. The U.K. top 10 is about as diverse as you get. Here is its genre breakdown, compared to the latest NPD (U.K. on the left):

FPS: 1 / 3
Sports: 1 / 3
Action/adventure: 3 / 2
Racing: 0 / 1
Music: 1 / 1
Puzzle: 1 / 0
Platform: 1 / 0

I suspect the Mario games (Olympics / 3D Land) are cannibalising Zelda's sales, especially if people are picking up new 3DS bundles for the coming of 3D Land and Kart -- that's a lot of money to be shelling out for a Nintendo fan.

I think piracy is probably a big problem here in the UK too, but I don't know to what to degree. All I know is that I've met a tonne of people myself who are doing it, and they're not overly tech savvy or members of any scene anything, they're normal people - somehow pilfering all sorts on their soft-modded Wiis. Its like the R4 card situation on DS, its viral - people are probably offering soft-mod services to friends and parents.

edit-ACR360 is ~52K, so SR360 and Layton are >52K and Skyrim(360) is <52K

edit2- SR(all)>77K
Last week
SR(all)>128K

edit3-Skyrim(all)<82K
Last week
Skyrim(all)<144K

I honestly think apathy is beating piracy on this one. The support for the Wii has been lacklustre for so long that people have just forgotten it existed. The dancing crowd are buying a Kinect and the core crowd are better served elsewhere.

Should've been a Wii-U launch title.

Edit: I'm aware that these charts invalidate my statement about the dancing crowd. I don't care, I'm crazy like that.

Agreed on thinking it's more likely apathy and not piracy.

Three of the top 5 Wii games are dance games. It's been like that all year long. The kind of people buying Wiis now, in 2011, are not hardcore Zelda fans. It's been 5 years since Twilight Princess, obviously there has been some console drift, nothing else can really explain the soft launch of a game that sold many millions ww.

Rayman has had quite a decent TV marketing push, so it's a really bad start. I actually haven't seen an ad for Zelda yet but that and Halo have dropped a lot.
Fifa creeping back up again.

Just as a matter of interest, when was SS finished? Would it have made a difference if it launched earlier?

Zelda had been advertised quite a few times if not extensively. There was even a mention of Zelda, Robin William's daughter, when he was on the Graham Norton Show on the BBC.

Well obviously, Wii's decline has had a part to play. I don't think it's apathy though, there's still a core Nintendo fanbase that would be buying Zelda, but the climate isn't great. Just Dance 3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Rev, Saints Row and MW3 is a crowded enough release window - and that's before you take into account Nintendo having new 3DS HW bundles, SM3D Land, Mario and Sonic at London 2012, and a new Layton game out... Zelda leaked on the Internet like, what, a week before it released in the UK? I'd put money on there being a sizable amount of people who exploited that. Especially as the controller bundle is like £50 or whatever... You think everyone playing it on Dolphin bought it? I doubt it. It doesn't even sound like Nintendo put ANY anti-piracy measures into the game... which they did on games like Spirit Tracks. They didn't even put something in to try and delay it being uploaded. I'm not saying piracy is the reason for its performance below-expectations, but I think it is one of many reasons. So many good games out, so much competing hardware and software, a home console in its twilight months... its a shame, because its an amazing game.
