PAL Charts - Week 47, 2011

Ugh, that is even worse! I mean, good for sales, but not good for an indication of sales numbers... Easily one of the best games of the entire year and most people pass over it because it isn't Call of Duty or Battlefield. Sadness...
Ehh, it'll keep it floating around the charts for a while. That's no bad thing. Obviously managed to stop it dropping so sharply this week.

Besides, this week more PS3 gamers bought that than BF3. :)

Or even cheaper prices. And to think that this gen was supposed to be super expensive. There have been a heck of a lot of great gaming deals. Hooray for competition.

yeah uncharted3 bomba,doomed,no legs,....
Those are sales maximum's, they don't tell you what the sales are or what the minimums could be.

What's the deal with the chart-track "budget" charts? I see LBP2, GT5 and Deus Ex on the PS3 one. I presume this is because their price has dropped below some threshold, but assuming that precludes them from appearing on the main chart, how many units would a game that tops the budget chart sell?

http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110035
Budget titles are included in the main top 40 chart if they sell enough

I dont get it. If it is maxium, but no minimun, it would mean that this:

19. (11) [PS3] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks) - <21,000

could actually have sold 5k? But that 21k is the maximum?

No, because 24th in the chart is a maximum of 20k. So it's between 21k and 20k. That would be a bit over the top in terms of labelling though. It's not hard to read downwards.

True, but then it could mean that 24th is selling i.e 4k :) I've always thought that it was like between 21k and 20k like you mentioned (like in this specific case, i read it like that UC3 sold about the same as last week, around 20k), but i was just wondering what the maximum stuff ment.

It's only maximums because it's calculated using the limited info we have. We figure out the highest possible number it could be based on games above it.

I plan on trying to do some ranges like I did last week (which are all worthless because the base numbers used to calculate are wrong)

That's not the way it works. Both numbers are maximums and don't tell us anything about the numbers above them.

But does it mean that it is in the vicinity of the estimated numbers? Like with PS3 Skyrim's "<21,000", is that around 21k or is it possible that it is like 5k?

In this case it's around 21K because Skyrim total is above the 68K for all versions so the PS3 version is above 18K.

Doesn't work that way for every game though.

Yeah, i missed that FIFA one with the ~ :) But what are the other "<" numbers based on? I'm just wondering if it is a complete guess or if the real number can be very far off.

Using known numbers (FIFA in this case) we can calculate maximums for games that are below that known number.

Lets give it a couple of weeks when the new releases die down from their launch weeks. The top 10 will contain two versions of COD, at least one dancing game, two versions of FIFA and at least one version of BF.

AC:R, UC3 and Z:SS will be nowhere to be seen.

I didn't include either UC3 or ZSS in the genre breakdown, so if anything, their omissions reinforce how diverse the chart is. Besides, in "a couple of weeks" the chart will likely be even more diverse, with the holiday season encouraging sales of games to a wider audience.

I don't see why you're arguing this when the OP's hard facts already shot you down before you started posting. The latest data shows representation of 7 different genres in the top 10 alone. If you want to generalise with sentences like, "All people buy here are stupid dancing games, COD and FIFA," when the current data points against that, then come back when the charts are more skewed in your favour.

Not a bad start for Mario Kart 7. SM3DL and Layton are holding on nicely too. Everything else is as expected really (except Moshi Monsters, talk about a beast out of nowhere!)

Moshi Monsters is huge with the kids these days. The weird thing about that game is, I was considering buying it for my kids as a present for Xmas and was trying some research but it is like the game is unknown to the internet. No reviews, no FAQs, no forum postings, nothing. All the links relate to the flash-based quasi-mmo.

I have never seen the like of it for such a relatively popular game.

Straight up, I didn't even realise it was out (thought it released on the 7th). Got my copy yesterday so that's +1 for next weeks chart!

What the fuck is up with that.
We're bored of the franchise. TP-induced apathy.

It's not like Zelda has ever really lit up the charts since OoT over here. TP is actually one of the best performing Zelda games!

The Mario Kart ads are ramping up now. (The one with the two guys playing it) along with M3D. Nothing now for Zelda tho. I would expect both the marios to be in the charts for months to come as they're now the defacto purchases with the system.

Colour me shocked. I wonder if being a launch title helped it?

Hopefully MK7 persuaded lots of people to buy 3DS' so I can up my streetpasses.

Wii doesn't have much shelf space from what I see in HMVs and the like and Zelda doesn't get much of that either, and there's been no ads or much publicity apart from reviews in the papers. It doesn't seem like Nintendo was expecting much, the big push is with the two marios on 3DS, guess there are more at stakes there.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ celebrates its first sales increase since it launched 4 weeks ago, holding on to No1 with a 2% jump in sales.

‘FIFA 12’ (+30%) shimmies past ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ (-2%) to become COD’s biggest competitor this week, up from No5 to No2 - however it is still over 55,000 sales behind Activision Blizzard’s blockbuster. Shoppers appear to already have an eye on Christmas with another strong festive performer ‘Just Dance 3’ (+54%) moving up from No8 to No4. Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ (-7%) falls one place to No5, while THQ’s ‘Saints Row: The Third’ (-24%) tumbles 3 places to No6. ‘Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call’ (-9%) on DS is still Nintendo’s biggest selling title this week, holding on to No7 despite the launch of ‘Mario Kart 7’ on 3DS – having to settle for a slightly less lucky No8. EA’s ‘Battlefield 3’ (+16%) is a non-mover at No9, as is Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario 3D Land’ (+20%) at No10, meaning the Japanese publisher has the most titles in the Top 10 this week (with 3).
There are no Top 40 new entries this week apart from ‘Mario Kart 7’, however there are a couple of titles entering the chart in their second week of release – ‘Abba: You Can Dance’ (+252%) in at No30 and ‘Zumba Fitness 2’ (+97%) at No34.

Doesn't the fact that it needs a Wiimotion+ affects the sales? Not every copy comes with one and not everyone has one. They could ship every copy of Zelda with a standard white Wiimote+, but that would make it more expensive than what they are asking now. Or they could ship the game with a Wiimote+ addon, not sure they want to still do that or keep making those. It's a rather tricky situation for Nintendo. Some people might have bought SS and not able to play it, not knowing it needs a Wiimote+, thus have to return it.

IT might hurt it a bit though I'm sure by now the majority of wii owners would probably have motion plus

Mario Kart 7 starts out higher in the charts than SM3DL, but does it start with greater unit sales?

Nah. The penetration rate for Motionplus is something between 70-90% now. Probably wouldn't have any significant effect at all.

Using known numbers (FIFA in this case) we can calculate maximums for games that are below that known number.
Yeah, but it is a bit pity that we dont know the minimum, because if the maximum is 20k, it could be anything from like 1k to 20k. But these numbers are better than nothing of course :)
