Note: Yes, this is the same source data from ICT used by Nvidia at GTC, but rendered using a completely different tech.

We believe this technology will bring current generation characters, into next generation life. At 180 fps in a Geforce GTX 680.

- it has been quoted in numerous sources if this was related with the Nvidia FaceWorks presented in GTC. I’d like to clarify that we both use the same performance capture from the ICT, but the animation and render engine is completely different. In other words, same source data but different engine.

- Finally, I’d to clarify that the technology we presented runs in its higher quality preset at 93/74 fps at 720/1080p respectively, in a GeForce GTX 560 TI (a two-year old mid-range GPU).

EDIT: Some background on what went into creating this demo.

I'd be in the dick
Looked stunning but I started laughing my ass off when he began ranting about his parfait like a suburban trophy wife.

I can only hope we eventually see tech like this in games next gen.

Looks absolutely amazing, but how real is too real. I don't think I want to play a game that has photo-realistic humans getting killed and displaying true physical traits when they die. I've seen 2 people killed in front of me, and if games get anywhere near the way that was I may be done gaming...

You know what would be insane? If after all these years joking Call of Duty for using the same engine and assets game after game, they came out with a Call of Duty that rivaled Crysis 3 in graphics. My mind would be blown.

The Internet would explode. The salt mountains would be huge.

One would hope with a new generation of hardware COD moves on to a new engine. The question is will they just drag that engine for the next 9 years.

After 6 years of not touching the graphics engine, they should have had enough time to work on something impressive, wouldn't you say?

They HAVE to move to a new engine I think. Mainly because the old engine doesn't support Direct X 11. Maybe be wrong on this.

Anyone think the shooter genre will die once character models look like this? I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to be blasting humans that look like real life. At that point I guess instead of humans we'd be fighting some type of humanoid aliens.

I thought it looked great until it started to talk and then it started to break the illusion for me. The talking just seemed off.

True, but after 6 years of using the same engines and assets ad nauseum, anything different at this point would be quite shocking. If Activision were to announce MW4 using the same assets from BO2 and MW3, I would not be surprised one bit.

As long as it can run 60fps on the next gen consoles, I'm all for a new engine. Thats one of the reasons I stick around with COD(except for BO 2, wasn't able to get this one due to personal reasons).

I bet you they will continue to use the Quake 3 engine or rather there most uptodate CoD engine (at least through 2014, upgraded to look and function similarly to ID Tech 5 (Rage Engine)) and then move on to Unreal 4. I doubt they will ever work on a proprietary next gen engine to be honest. Outside of blizzard, I can't think of a single studio under Activision that has ever developed 100% proprietary engine technology (excluding ID of course back in the day) Although this could be the start of an internally developed engine to be shared across devs similar to how EA utilizes frostbite.

This stuff could be so cool for MMOs. Being able to talk to someone nearby and having your characters animate to actually say the words would be amazing.

Looks great. There was a rumor that the next COD will be nextgen only, and if they are using this tech [womans face], then I cant see how they will easily downgrade it to PS3/X360.

The eyeball itself looks quite good, it sits in the face very well but the surrounding flesh and eyelashes in particular drag it down.

Generally the flesh looks a little too waxy in Lauren, but I think the eyes were the real focus of this whole thing.
Perhaps they've integrated it into their next gen engine for real time cinematics, and were discussing the integration process?
I think Activision has been working on this for a while. Not sure if with nVidia or not but it's a dedicated team for Activision to share between its studios a lot like EA and Sony have. They are certainly making a contribution to the collective progress of real time rendering alongside nVidia and others.
Whats the cut-off point for you? When does it become pointless to improve?
When 3.6m is not enough.

Damn, the wireframe impressed me, those looked like very few triangles, yet it was still very impressive looking.

It would have been much better showing what Activision is specifically doing with the tech than a straight copy of the nVidia model....

Really amazing stuff coming out at GDC. Kind of makes you wonder where we go from here? I don't think the face can look any more realistic (except maybe the mouth animation).

I think the key take away from that has to be that they're targeting both generations with this tech. Single animation pipeline for both meshes.

Uncanny valley. Mouth especially.

Mouth? Teeth? mouth cavity? They nailed the fucking eyes and that is the most difficult part. WTF are the complainers on about? For fuck sake now...
The mouth animation isn't perfect here. But it is not hard to nail down. Just look at what LA Noir is doing and other mocap techniques. It was always been the eyes and these are the best I've seen. Not only CG quality, but they look real. Edit a full scale picture with that tech and you can fool anybody.
