screw you GOG for getting rid of my easy access to box art images and banners for recommended games in the website redesign. This month's banner art goes

Here's Sinatar's useful summary of the games being de-listed from GOG in two more days (from the prior thread):

Gothic 2 - RPG Classic, all time great
Gothic 3 - Not great, skippable
Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods - Absolute festering dogshit
Amnesia The Dark Descent - One of the best horror games ever made.
Penumbra Collection - Same developer as amnesia, these play almost like prototypes of that game, you can kind of see with each one how they ended up with Amnesia. Skippable unless you're a massive horror game fan.
Spellforce 1 & 2 - RTS/RPG hybrids. Really fun games, both are also huge with tons and tons of content
Desperadoes - Commandos in the Wild West. If you're not familiar with Commandos it's a sort of strategy game/puzzle game where you control a squad of dudes with unique abilities and have to complete missions with them.
The Guild 1 & 2 - Pretty cool city builder sim city type games. The second one is better the the first in every way, so you can probably skip 1.
Painkiller Black - Absolutely fantastic arcade arena FPS. Brilliant game.
Red Faction - First person sci fi shooter notable for having destructible environments. Hasn't aged very well.
Red Faction 2 - This was already a mediocre sequel when it was brand new and the years haven't been kind.
Summoner - Fun little RPG, nothing special but it's worth a shot if you're an RPG nut.
Silver - Very odd RPG. 3d characters on pre-rendered backgrounds, has a sort of action RPG combat system. I tried this for the first time last year and didn't really dig it, but it has it's fans.
Black Mirror - Never played this series.
Full Spectrum Warrior 1 & 2 - A tactical strategy game played from a zoomed in 3rd person perspective. Not terrible, though pretty basic.
Jack Keane 2 - Fuck you Jack Keane.
Dark Fall 1 & 2 - Never played this series.
Aquanox 1 & 2 - Arcadey six degrees of freedom FPS games. Basically Descent underwater. Pretty fun.
Freedom Force vs. The 3rd Reich - Real time with pause tactical strategy/RPG game with superheroes. Really fantastic game. Deep character creation systems, fully destructible environments and a funny entertaining story in the style of the silver age of comics.
The Nations - A settlers clone, but a good one.
Neighbours from Hell - Never played this.
Panzer Elite - Never played this.
Chaser - Generic sci fi FPS game. Not great.
Alien Nations - Sequel to the nations, sci fi settlers basically.

When they said they were adding DRM-free movies, I was hoping they'd be good old movies, not just documentaries about video games.

The movie thing went completely past me. First time I've heard of it. It's not that I'm disinterested in general, but... I dunno, those movies? Not my kinda thing.

Which, obviously, introduces the chicken-egg problem of lack of demand causing a lack of supply. Sigh.

It's a shame to see so many quality titles disappear from the catalog. I hope they can resolve the issues behind it and get them back up there at some point.

The movie selection as it stands doesn't do much for me, but I'm not entirely against the idea of GOG becoming more of a general DRM-free content provider as long as they keep a steady flow of games coming. I'm sure they're trying to find new revenue streams as their niche has been made not-quite-as-niche from Humble and Steam.

First time posting in one of these threads, but I've been a fan since their inception in June. Great job, Minsc.

They've got to start someone. It's not like the movie industry has any DRM free schemes themselves, so it's going to take time.

It's fantastic. I bought a couple already like Once Upon Atari. I'd wish they'd have more. A few feel like they're a little off-topic, but they fit in with the medium.

Man, I can't find anything on their new redesign.
Such a bad layout.

Not to mention it takes significantly longer to load, and to move anywhere on the page.

It was mentioned in the last thread - something about Nordic not playing nice with the new regional pricing rules.
This doesn't surprise me, Nordic's regional pricing on the likes of Steam is an insult. Good on GOG for not giving in to their demands and greed.

December 2012:

It looks like they're going big on Apogee stuff, I wonder just what the licensing was like back then; it'd be fantastic to see some of their early-to-mid-nineties stuff. I want Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure!

March 2013:

I think it's got to the stage that we can start guessing each Tuesday what Apogee title will be coming next. Hoping for Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure!

I've been so very patient.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure

(Also: Surgeon Simulator Anniversary Edition Upgrade.)

Oooh, yes. Cinemaware are an interesting curio of the 90's. I'm not sure the games were strictly good, but they were undeniably interesting.

VERY IMPORTANT TIDBIT in that post:

What's more Cinemaware has mentioned that not only will the DOS version be sold, but also the very first Amiga games will also be sold with the DOS versions through GOG.

Opening up the Amiga catalogue would be huge. I wonder how they'll handle the distribution. Negotiated a deal to distribute the Kickstart ROM legally?

FINALLY! Amiga games have been a major omission, as have those for the Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, &c.

Doesn't make up for the loss of Gothic 2, but it could signal an influx of classic release.

Also, please, please, please, Amiga versions of Cannon Fodder and Alien Breed games.

Three more games this week, all caught up again with current releases. 4/4 for week 35's releases, and 0/3 (so far) for this past week's.

Hogs of War is up first, and while it may not be as well known as the Worms series, it has a pretty much unanimously agreeing set of fans that say it's what a 3D worms should have been. Rik Mayall (RIP) is one of the game's highlights, as the VA for the campaign / characters, which actually has positive impressions and is something not really found in a Worms game. So, if you enjoyed Worms, check it out. It may not be as great as the best Worms games (like Armageddon), but it should be better than the 3D ones.

Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut is next, and the impressions for this one weren't quite as one-sided, but they still generally fell to the positive end. Biggest concerns were the short length (~3 hours), and (lack of) narrative, which I suppose the Director's Cut addresses in a minor fashion, and the puzzles aren't quite as intuitive as Portal, but still fairly enjoyable. Some people found Antichamber to be the better indie first person puzzle game, but many people still agreed QUBE was entertaining and worth a few bucks (but perhaps not full price).

Anodyne is the last recommended addition for this week, and it comes from GOG's existing catalogue. "A love letter to the Game Boy Zelda games," sounds like a good summary. Where it shines is the exploration and atmosphere / details put in to the game, however the puzzles / combat is said to be fairly average. Still, people really enjoyed it like most games in the list, and it brings a slight unsettling / psychological twist to the gameplay without being a horror game.

As for what didn't make the cut, we have (all last week's releases, can't win them all):
- MIND: Path to Thalamus (incredibly impressive visuals, seems to be let down or even ruined for people by the narrative/story elements without much else to pick up the slack)
- Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure (seems fondly remembered when mentioned, but basically no actual impressions of it unfortunately)
- Hatoful Boyfriend (will wait to see if more impressions surface in the next few weeks, but what I found from the original release sounds like it's more than the joke game it may look to be at a glance, so it should make the cut with a few new impressions)

Nice find, Amiga releases have been something long requested, guess time will tell how they are packaged / run.

This is a bit off-topic seeing as how it concerns a deal on another PCDD store, but it should be of interest to some folks here. GamersGate has a really good sale on Dungeons and Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection. $4.99/ÂŁ3.74 for a collection containing Baldur's Gate I & II (+Expansions), PlaneScape Torment, Icewind Dale I & II, and D&D: Temple of Elemental Evil. DRM-Free, though all of them are in one 10GB install/download file. Should be a good pick-up if you missed GG's previous sale on it.

I've been so very patient.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure

Neat. Like many other Apogee platformers, I remember playing this on a shareware disc. It stood out too, since it had colorful graphics, big sprites, and some interesting gameplay mechanics like sticking to walls. It's been over a decade since I last played it, but I'm guessing that it probably holds up better than most of the others.

Wonder how GOG will handle the Kickstart distribution thingy...
Also, please, please, please, Amiga versions of Cannon Fodder and Alien Breed games.

Amiga Forever uses the kickstart/OS files under license, so at least that shows that whoever owns the license is willing to negotiate. I'd think that GOG/Cinemaware'll license it too. It's also possible that Cinemaware already has it licensed, since they've released emulated Amiga games on iOS/Android.

GOG has turned 6 and is having a sale to celebrate. Looks like each day they will focus on titles from a year of them being around, so today is stuff they had in 2008.

Are they not going to update the Game Library page? It still doesn't let me view 'mac only' games when on Mac. It still annoys me about dragging to sort..

Bought Simon The Sorcerer 1, 2 and Earth 2140 Trilogy, JA2.
I look forward to the Amiga content. I hope they'll let us download Amiga versions for games where we purchased the DOS versions of..
I just can't resist the $1.79 pricepoint.

Can I play the GOG version of JA2, or do I have to download any community mods for major bug fixes?

Oh, I see I got quoted for Tetrobot. Yeah, it's a really cool game, I like it a lot. Definitely plan on finishing it once the WiiU version hits.

That's an interesting point: There was a time when the Amiga versions were the definitive versions of games. I wonder what - from the GoG catalogue - would fit that bill. Certainly from the Ultima family the Amiga versions of 2 and 3 are far more palatable, IIRC. I think the difference is less pronounced with 4, but I suspect 4 still has the edge.

Most Amiga games have the edge over their DOS counterpart. :) Dat soundchip!

So they changed their website and now I can't figure out where to go to change my password (I like to change it several times a year...). Any one know where it is? I'm pretty sure it used to be Account -> Settings, but it doesn't look like the option is there anymore (it doesn't look like I can even change my E-mail if I needed to either).
