Wow. Really impressed with my first session.
First and foremost, the movement is the first thing that will be noticed(obviously). The game controls wonderfully, making it very simple to wallrun and jump around--it's not hard at all to bounce back and forth to get up a building, yet there is a ton of on the fly player decisions to get around. But it also impacts combat, especially when I was using the smart pistol, wallrunning while locking on and taking dudes out. It's very satisfying.
Of course, it takes more than just the mechanics of moving, and the 2 maps in the beta are designed really well to take advantage of this. Giving ample room for pilot maneuvering, titan fights in the streets, titan on pilot combat...there's a lot they had to keep in mind and if they keep up the quality for the rest of the maps it'll be fantastic.
Core shooting does feel very much like CoD, though the time to kill is a bit longer. Haven't tried the shotgun yet, just been using the carbine and smart pistol. The smart pistol is really damn fun and lets you rack up a ton of bot kills, but I don't think it's overpowered at all. It takes a pretty long time to actually get a triple lock on actual players, and that's without them moving around much. In a straight heads on fight, you will be outgunned. In a scenario where you're moving around trying to lock and they're not hitting, then you earned that kill. Trying to sneak around also can work, but you can't just mindlessly run around in cloak as it's pretty easy to see when you're not in a titan.
Oh, right, titans! I've been having really high survivability in them so far, typically getting the damage core each time I use one, though I play them VERY aggressively. I melee a lot as it's a strong counter to the vortex shield, and it adds a fun dynamic when you do go into doomed state in the thick of action, trying to make something happen after the ejection. But beyond that there is something empowering when you have a moment like I did in a match earlier, where I just had a 1v1 fight, won, then turned around to head towards the dropship that was going to come and I saw my entire team were all in Titans. We all stuck together as one big clump of death.
There is constant action happening, keeping you busy at all times. Moving around, taking out clumps of AI, or having a fun dance around fighting actual players and bots at the same time.
I haven't had as much fun with an MP game in awhile compared to what I just experienced. Excited to jump back in for more later.
