Tekken 3 sold 8.3 million worldwide (1.4 million is from Japan)

I remember playing this in a makeshift tournament with a lot of relatives, they were over 30 and didn't play video games at all. They all loved it. I played tons of games vs my uncle. Good times.

Beating the Arcade Mode with Paul's charge attack in under two minutes (standard two round fight, come at me) was one of the most hilarious things I did on consoles.

I played the demo disk version of Tekken 3 for hours, even though I had FF8 to play. I was originally a N64 kid and the only fighter I had was Dark fucking Rift. Tekken was like a gift from the gods after forcing myself (and friend) to play that, blergh. Needless to say, I got Tekken 3 ASAP and played it to death.

And I was mindblown that that one cool game with amazing graphics I once saw in a store was the same game I saw in a mag and was just Tekken 2 and I played an even better looking version of the game I had wanted to play for months but didn't knw what it was.

Never knew Gon was still pretty relevant in Japan, probably why Tekken 3 will never get a rerelease as prev. mentioned.

Me and my friends bought Tekken 3 when it came out in Japan. We were blown away by the near arcade perfect quality, the CGI cut scenes and the music! It changed my perception about FG's at the time, and made it clear that the PS1 was the most powerful console of the time (above Saturn and N64).
Then the PAL version happened... What a crappy port that was.

The 3DS game pictured was released by Bandai Namco, though, which means they still have the rights for the character.

How the might have fallen.

What were the numbers for the previous Tekken games?
Must have been a few hundred thousands in each of the major territories?

I still have a hard time believing the Tekken hype train during that era..
It was arguably a worse technical/skill based fighter than Virtua Fighter & a less frantic/arcade fighter than DOA.

Man did this game have some insane BS.... but still a necessary stepping stone to evolving the franchise into the sole reason why gaming is my passion today.

Also, if anyone wants to play Tekken 3 right via twitch, Rip programmed a way to play Tekken 3 on his stream by typing into the twitch chat:

http://www.twitch.tv/levelupyourgame

EDIT: Lol, that is so not working haha.

I still feel bad for this being the only Tekken i skipped out on. Played 1 and 2, then passed T3 because i thought "it's just the same game again". Then got back in with T4 and on some mates' advice threw it in the garbage to play Tag 1 instead.

Still haven't played T3 though. Why, younger self, why?

This is not too surprising, back then they would demo the PS1 in any electronic store using Tekken and kids would line up to play it.

Yo Gon was the shit in Tekken force. Circle Circle Circle Circle LOL. very useful on the Dr. especially since most of the time he is on low to the ground.

I still consider Gon and Yoda... lame characters tho lol Half a hitbox? lol cmon xD

Tekken and street fighter are still the go to fighters lol, whenever T x Sf come out that shit will bought fo sho. I kno I'll buy em along with many other people.

Yeah Tekken 3 was the game that got a lot of people into the series and for some into 3D fighters if they had already started with Tekken 1 and 2 or Virtua Fighter. It was pretty rough going for many people who, couldn't deal with phoenix smashes or King's chain grabs.

I remembered I had bought issues of Gamepro with the move lists inside and I was begged and pleaded with to bring to school for people to write stuff down in the back of their notebooks or asked to bring it with me when I went to the arcades with my friends.

And yeah soundtrack is damn excellent, I listen to it almost all the time.

Yeah the WIIU version

Only on Wii U

Oh that sucks. At least patch it for early adopters. Shame.

Absolutely fantastic game even to this day, but I don't see why you would go back to it now that we have games like TTT2.

Virtua Fighter always looked so bland however the newest one or whatever looked pretty cool, same with new KOF they really stepped it up lol

Sony exclusivity when Sony was the overwhelming leader in VG hardware.

Makes one wonder how in conceivable hell did Capcom completely botch a game with two of the biggest FG brands?

The only Tekken that I bought and actually spent hundreds of hours playing.

I can still remember King's combo and grabs.

The last Tekken I cared about being good at, every new Tekken I play now is based off of 1, 2, and 3s move set. They still hold up too lol

Tekken 3 was the first real Tekken game. It set the system basics every Tekken(except 4) has followed since. Too bad the game is broken as fuck.

Well I for one love Sf x T. It was pretty awesome if i do say so myself. Huge character roster awesome FMV cinematics, characters from both IPs. Shit's awesome lol

Well deserved, Tekken 3 was the shit back then.

I remember beating all the arcade stories one shot back then because I didn't have any memory cards. :(

Not really surprised. I remember when it came out, there was huge hype for it in the UK. The demo especially was attracting a lot of attention.

Yes ! this game is my favorite fighting game of all time so many 2 player battles. Hope Bandai Namco go balls out for the next Tekken.

Sad people are not interested in fighting games as back in the 90s.

It's a shame, but I think developers can do a better job of trying to get people interested. There's so many gameplay choices within the "fighting game" genre that isn't being used today. I wish we had more games like Bushido Blade, Urban Reigns, Onimusha Blade Warriors (underrated game!), Tom and Jerry War of whiskers (another underrated game!), and Bleach: Dark Souls.

A lot of the games I listed have co-op gameplay and it would be great for spectators. Some of these games in this age could have been huge.

I still remember EGM #91, the black cover with the hwoarang, eddie and xiaoyu reveals. That was awesome and got me really hype back in the day.

Remember the days when Japanese third party support mattered? Good times.

That is an insane figure right there for a Tekken game.

Look at the top 10 best selling games on PS1:

Gran Turismo
Final Fantasy VII
Gran Turismo II
Tekken 3
Final Fantasy VIII
Harry Potter
Tomb Raider II
Crash Bandicoot: Warped
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider

5/10 from Japanese devs

PS2:

San Andreas
Gran Turismo 3
Gran Turismo 4
Vice City
GTA III
MGS 2
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Kingdom Hearts
God of War

6/10 from Japanese devs

Then PS3:

GTA V
Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
God of War III
Modern Warfare 2
Uncharted 3
Uncharted 2
The Last of Us
Motorstorm
COD: Black Ops

2/10 (and that's pushing it) from Japanese devs =/

So my question is... how the hell did Tekken sell so damn well on PS1? Japanese games were just hot shit at the time?

Not the best Tekken but my favourite. The improvements and additions over T2, the look, the music, the new cast, the time leap in the story that was both novel and affected the character relations in clever ways, the endless volume of content on the PSOne disc... Namco really went the extra mile with 3. Brilliant game and phenomenal conversion.
