I don't think getting stuck in blighttown was the essence of Dark Souls or that it was the thing that made the game great, but I guess YMMV.
Well.... When I found that ladder leading up to the Valley of Drakes the first time, I wouldn't say I wept with relief, but it was something close to that. If I could just have warped to Firelink, that moment would have been lost.

Here is a quick question. Is Dark Souls I and II heavily online community based? I ask this because I have never played either and prefer to start with Dark Souls I but will it still be fun even though most of the online community will have moved on to II or should I follow the community like Fighters and FPS genres'?

This was posted earlier in the thread but I have a collector's edition on preorder. My delivery estimate was the 13th. I changed the shipping from 1 day and then back to 2 day and now it's scheduled for the 11th. I also did this with that strategy guide and it worked.

Yes, fortunately you were one of the lucky ones who have managed to secure their pre-order. Like I said, I never got a delivery estimate for mine, and when I contacted Amazon to sort it out, they told me the game is on back-order so there is now no indication when my preordered PS3 BAE will arrive, or if it will arrive at all.

If its anything like Demon's Souls it should still have some people playing around and helping.

Destroys a essences of the series.
Getting stuck in depths/blighttown, or catacombs/tomb of giants, or ash lake and having to fight your way out were things that made dark souls the great game it is.

Getting stuck in the Depths for hours while cursed almost made me quit the game. Somehow I kept missing the doorway down the corridor from the bonfire.

I have the PS3 version. I'm not really going to talk about it yet but I'll say that the framerate isn't great on PS3. I haven't experienced anything near as bad as blighttown, but there are frequent intermittent drops that don't last long. I am sensitive to this. Long load times are a bummer because I'm dying so much. For what it's worth I don't think the warping is breaking the game. I'm going away now.

Of course it's not. Warping has truly nothing to do with what makes Dark Souls the beast it is.

I've been helping one of my friends through Dark Souls I for the past few weeks and the community is still quite strong. He's playing on PC though, not sure what it looks like on consoles these days. I would imagine the PS3 community is still pretty active, at the least.

Regardless, the game is fantastic even without the online stuff.

That was the shittiest part to introduce you to being cursed. Don't have a purging stone because why would you at this point in the game? HAVE FUN!

Great, good to hear. Honestly the helping thing isn't that important to me. I am sure I can learn fast and besides their are always tutorials and online guides if I get desperate. Is the Story any good?

Edit: Oh and do I need to play Demon's Soul to appreciate this or is this one significantly better?

I got stuck in Tomb of the Giants for many hours. It was a fucking nightmare.

The story and lore are quite interesting and deep but they are mostly presented through out of the way stuff like item descriptions so if you really want to get into that aspect of the game you'll have to do some digging. There isn't much in the way of cutscenes and dialog compared to most RPG's. It's a different approach but many fans of the series love it for how nuanced it is. The main draw of Dark Souls for me personally is the gameplay and world exploration, though.

Edit: Oh and do I need to play Demon's Soul to appreciate this or is this one significantly better?
They aren't tied together but you should still play Demon's Souls sometime, it's great! Personally I think Dark Souls is a significantly better game but it's a pretty loaded question, kind of like asking someone which Final Fantasy game is the best.

Each game does some things better. Everyone seems to like more the Nexus, The World Tendency and NPCs from Demon's Souls while combat seems to be more polished and the exploration aspect seems bigger on Dark Souls. Overall both games are great and you should play them because they are fun games and quite memorable.

One of the most rewarding aspect of the series is overcoming the odds. Even those that annoy the hell out of you; because once you're finally through with whatever was stymying you, it's like "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU".

Getting down to the first bonfire in blighttown or tog was way more easy than getting back out again.

That's why you don't go down to the first bonfire just to try to get back up. Who the hell does that? I mean, I'm sure some people have done it, but there's no real reason to not push forward. The Tomb was quite a bit harder to navigate your way out of prior to warping.

I've been invading non stop the last weeks on 360. Still really active.

So I know some people are getting different shipment dates on their orders from Amazon. I am not even getting a shipment date, just a estimate for the day I will get it. Anyone else have this come up on their order? I've never seen this on any of my orders from Amazon, so I am kind of worried.

That's the same message I'm getting. It's really gonna fucking suck if I don't get it on Tuesday. I even put one day delivery.

Where did you preorder from and where are you hearing this news about getting stuck with the standard edition?

According to Amazon when I emailed them today to ask what was up with my lack of a delivery estimate for my preorder, the game is on back-order. They didn't say when it would be available. I will be extremely upset if this means that whenever it does ship, it will be the standard edition and not the black armor edition. (I am in the USA and placed my preorder several weeks ago.)

By all accounts, it sounds like someone really messed up.

When you order games at my local store they only ever run out of CE's on their website.
For DSII however, they seem to have run out of normal copies too which is a first.
Somethings probably wrong. (Europe btw)

I've got the same thing happening right now. However, I've spoken with Amazon Support via Chat twice and they've both assured me that my copy will be delivered on the date of release.

Man the people having issues with the preorder are giving me flashbacks of when Dark Souls 1 came out. Somebody fucked something up and all of the newegg preorders got cancelled the night before release. I ended up going to best buy on day 1 and got it off the shelf.

I have a spare game on my gamefly queue empty and DS2 as at the top waiting for release. Does Gamefly ship their games a day before release day or will they wait till Tuesday to even put it in the mail?

I got a chat going with a rep to get to the bottom of the same issue and all he could say was that he expected me to get my copy on the 11th but that he couldn't guarantee it. It sounds like if you're placing your order now you are way behind a lot of other customers. IMO they don't have the stock to guarantee everyone copies on time.

Hit up Best Buy if you want the Black Armor edition still.

For what it's worth I don't think the warping is breaking the game. I'm going away now.

It doesn't break the game, but… I really don't like what it does do to the game. I think people's reactions to the warping will depend on which they liked better, Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. (I'm someone who much prefers Dark Souls.)

I had Dark Souls delivered to my in-laws's house, because I was away on vacation during that time (which I had planned long before they announced the release date, lol). So when I came back all my friends had already finished the game and it was annoying. XD I picked one-day shipping now, I better get it on day 1.

If bonfires are as sparse as archstones, then I don't mind the warping, obviously. Somehow I doubt it though...

Nah, I think that's what he actually looks like in vanilla. Here's a few more:

Lautrec looks amazing.

Everyone bashes the Dark Souls face creation, but personally I think it lets you make some good looking faces... Most people, unfortunately, will come up with shit and then bash the system.

Hoping those animu heads from Dark Souls 2 screens aren't the new standard.

Just one more reason FromSoft is amazing. Shit you can't even see in the game normally, and all the faces look appropriate to the characters.

It's not all luck, I mean, it's just planning ahead. I preordered Dark Souls CE ages ago. If you know you want something, preorder it right away.

Yeah, with some time (and luck) you can make some decent-looking creations. My only complaint with Dark Souls' was the hair options.

Man, I loved the Demon's Souls warping structure, maybe even more so than Dark. Everytime I got stuck, it was time to try something new. It didn't feel nearly as dangerous as Dark Souls, but I loved the variety when you felt like seeing a change of scenery.

I guess I'll just restrict myself from warping. I loved getting stuck in places for hours in Dark Souls. It forced me to memorize the area and think up all kind of strategies. I can understand that many people don't like that stuff.
