Dark Souls 2 Lighting changes/Downgrade

Making my way through that pitch black cave in the network test was great :/

A new trailer came out today, and some of it seems to have that lighting and some of it doesn't.

I assume this has probably been posted though.

edit: sorry for the dp, expected someone to have responded by now.

That's a terrible trailer. At this point i'm pretty convinced that this will be a misstep for the series.

"Having finally made it to the demo boss, the Mirror Knight, I was hit with a little bit of subtle trolling from the game. For each time a player died, a candle would be lit in the bonfire room before you faced the boss. My character was born in the darkness, but by the time he reached the Mirror Knight, the light from all those candles was blinding."

I'm calling it people. This is like the bell tower in DkS. The light will change with server activity.

That would only explain the lighting in one of the rooms though.

I wish more devs would be conservative in their estimates. If we saw the retail (downgrade) version instead of the fancy version we'd all be like "Yup, that's Dark Souls. Can't wait!". Instead we were like "Wow! Dark Souls got good looking! Look at the nice lighting!" and we were never gonna get that.

Agreed.
Mabye the gaming crowd is just too forgiving?

The basic idea should be for the consumer to say "hey, this final product is actually even better as what they showed me before release". Not the other way around.

If something like this would happen in movie there would be an outcry

Its pretty messed up how much of a downgrade some of this shit is. Blatant false advertising. It doesnt even make sense. PS3 is old hardware and they supposedly had versions running on it. Its not like they were targeting next gen systems and so they had to scale back like Watch Dogs.

And the changes arent even for the benefit of brighter lighting, i mean there are so many detail and poly changes along with missing assets one has to wonder if the demo they made was total bullshit. At the very least, even if there was some crippling memory issue or something they didnt anticipate they should gave proven the game was runnable before showing anything.

Now they are gonna get a ton of backlash over something that could have been entirely avoided by not fucking around.

Two things, in the intrest of fairness.

Gameplay impressions have been incredibly solid.
From has never been good about showing off their game for whatever reason. I have seen them release gorgeous games, but never gorgeous screenshots.

They had the new engine with all the bells and whistles running on aspects of the game. Not the game in its entirety. The scope of those demos and betas (though we can call them tech demos or engine showcasing now in all honesty) are much smaller than the full game and as a result could've handled the brunt of the hardware needs. They couldn't optimize the game in its entirety in time so they cut it all out. It's not surprising. Messed up? Sure. It's not similar to Watch Dogs at all.

My theory is that they took the concept of the Bell Tower from DkS and the World Tendency from DS and merged it into light and darkness.

Maybe some shots we are seeing are neutral WT ( the grey bland stuff) and when players die the world gets darker (= harder to see, need to use torch more) so it looks more like the E3 demo.

That tweet is extremely suspect. The fact that he says "you'll understand when I do" acknowledges that there is a downgrade of lighting first and foremost. Secondly, he's trying to appease the audience of the tweet by saying "understand" and in essence alleviating concerns. Lastly, it shows that there is no plan at the moment to change.

that would actually be really cool, kinda makes me wish that's how it is.

While cool, that doesn't resolve the issue that there is the lack of dynamic lighting initially presented in the previous builds....

Gotta remember EpicNameBro for his input on the games release.
General reviews from big names sites are nearly guaranteed to be meaningless.

I highly respect Kevin VanOrd's opinion of the game.

From today's trailer, looks like the downgrade is reflected in the area here as well:

That was as much as they showed, guess they didn't want people to see too much of it, hah.
