I thought you hated open platforms? Surely having an open platform for tv/music services but curated platform for apps and games is the best of both worlds in the closed garden/open platform debate for this kind of device
Not saying I would buy such a thing...

I get that this device is meant to compete with Roku and Apple TV and that gaming is just an extra bonus to sway that particular audience,
but still... why bother if you're Amazon?
I don't think this will make as much of a dent in the market as they hope it will.

Hrmm. As pointless as it may sound to some of you, I was really hoping they would have a remote with a headphone jack. Though, I imagine bluetooth audio will be supported.

That looks like a fantastic Android set top box. Is sideloading supported? It would be a shame for such a good piece of hardware to not have access to the Play Store, Plex and XBMC.

Hopefully a cyanagenmod port isn't too far away.

Emultaion performance isn't great on the shield.

I've got one, and other than sound lag and a few specific PSP games it works pretty damn well. Better graphics than some PSP games originally had. HDMI out onto a 1080p display, every system up to PS1/DS/PSP runs well.

Huh? Vita has PowerVR SGX 543MP4+

I was always under the impression that the 320 was more powerful than the 543mp4+. Guess not.

Amazon needs a way to control the delivery of their content into the living room. This gives them an end to end content solution, while preventing Apple and Google from slowly forcing them out.

Also, people continue to underestimate how awesome Free Time unlimited is for parents:

"FreeTime Unlimited is an all-you-can-eat content subscription designed for kids ages 3 to 8 that brings together movies, TV shows, apps, and games that kids and parents love. Subscribers enjoy unlimited access to content from Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, PBS Kids, and more from just $2.99 per month."

The game side looks pretty un-spectacular, but this is going to be a great alternative to those who'd regularly go out for Roku or AppleTV, considering the game compatibility.

I have one, and games like GoW (both), Wipeout (both), Resistance (didn't even boot) and GT are nearly unplayable.

It is, by a bit:

Do note that there were 2 revisions of the Adreno 320, on top of that it can have different clock rates. A non-mobile version may be able to swing higher clock rates. (nothing huge, but like 15-20%)

Emulation performance isn't great on the shield.

If you're talking about psp emulation on the shield, then it's pretty good. Aside from some general emulator incompatibilites, nearly every I tried ran at full speed (and then some, when you disable the frame limiter). The shield's emulator performance is about the best you're gonna get on an android device right now.

I have one, and games like GoW (both), Wipeout (both), Resistance (didn't even boot) and GT are nearly unplayable.

With the wipeout games in particular, you'll have to change the rendering mode from buffered to unbuffered. Gran turismo runs slow, even emulated on PC. Haven't tried GoW.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
The more I think on it the more that chart annoys the shit out of me (not only because it's factually wrong in some cases) but because it straight up obviously ignores the fact of all the shit an Apple TV or Chromecast does with your current smartphone or tablet.

Can the box run chrome or safari? Can you mirror your iPad? Does it allow you to play my Google Music? What about share my pics and videos from iCloud? What about pics I took my and Android Phone?

The Snapdragon processor is really getting around...I know nothing of its capabilities but I know it's being pushed pretty hard on the LG Smartphone front.

Purely for XBMC and emulators, because I don't think there is any future for this device as a gaming platform.

well it seems more clearly targeting just the living room in general, the machine is primarily geared at TV/Film/music. when you consider performance of the machine, the price, the games content and partners, it seems perfectly suited to gaming for those who are not concerned with the more high end gaming focus. it has as much of a future as a gaming platform as mobile has for the past several years. the audience for "core" gaming versus this and mobile are very different

has yet to tasted the golden nectar that is tag
Coming Soon according to Amazon.
I'll be waiting then. Everything else looks good for the price and I need something to replace my 360 for streaming on my non-smart tv since I stopped paying for gold.

The question is: Can you connect your external HDD to it and watch mkv files on it, or is it just a streaming device?

Pics and videos stored on Amazon Cloud can be shared, it allows you to play music stored on your Amzon Cloud music player etc. You can mirrors things from a Kindle HDX tablet.

So basically yes, it can do most of those things, as long as you are using Amazon services. Just like an Apple TV is most useful to people who use Itunes and Apple products/services, and a Chromecast is most useful to people for have Android hardware and services.

YMMV, I played MGA, Lumines, Megaman X+PU, VC3 and DBZ:SB2 all without issues. Some looked better than PSP. Only issues were with T6 (Framerate) and Miku (hard to play with audio lag).

I think you may be missing the point though. MS wants the user whom is focused on games yet still enjoys this type of multimedia interaction. Do I need a dedicated STB that will do everything that the XBO can from a multimedia side but can't play games at the same graphical fidelity or with the same online components/controller?

For me its a no.

Over the life of the XBO, do you expect Amazon to upgrade the hardware enough and dedicate the resources to compete with MS/Sony on the gaming side? How of an impact will the hardware revisions make when the STB is essentially just running apps and they can be run on the two consoles as well?

Sony and MS are targeting a user whom wants both games and multimedia. They are using different methods but that is who they are targeting.

Im sorry but I honestly believe the users that bought the Xbox one for its media capabilites are a tiny minority.

The Majority bought the X1 because its the next Xbox. Games first and foremost. Media functions and Kinect are cool but they are just icing on the cake. Would you have forgone Kinect and Hdmi for more powerful hardware? Of course.

Which means media is not so much a selling point but rather a bragging point ONCE you already have the console. People who are looking primarly for casual and media experiences, with gaming on the side have much better options than both the X1 and PS4.

It makes no sense to have the cost of your console raised to cater to that market. Even gamers with non gaming families are better served with a kinectless X1 and FireTv combo than with the current X1 package. Lets not services like Onlive/Playstation now are on the horzion, and im sure that steam OS will eventually do something similar.

People say that a kinectless X1 is a weaker PS4, but they are still comparable in value, especially when we compare on a software level. A dramatically more expensive Roku/AppleTv/FireTv with Software that isnt mostly for the causal audience is not and that is what the X1 now is.

Not to mention for a year and 4 months of live gold alone, you can have one of these devices. They pay for themselves.

And by hardware iteration, im talking about hardware innovation that allows media features to shine better than the fixed point of consoles can. Faster WiFi, Bluetooth, Wireless Hdmi, More ram greater CPU power are things that we legitimately can expect in future iterations of the FireTv and such devices. These things are updated yearly. Things by the very nature of being a console, the X1 cannot keep up anywere near as fast or nimble. We only had 3 model revisions of the 360, one arguably was at the tail end of its mainstream commerical life.

No they will never have the processing power nor the developer support to beat the consoles for hardcore gaming but that is besides the point. We are at the stage were mobile style games are already enough for a huge audience in terms of visuals and depth and for a consumer that sees gaming as a side dish in the same way we see media features as a side dish, there us really only one sensible choice.

Thats why im saying that Microsoft needs to double down on games because thats where the X1 can excell. For those experiences you dont need kinect or a interface built around metro. You don't need a HDMI either. You need to invest in first party studios, indies and securing as much exclusive software as possible. The dream of the Xbox one "winning the living room" is dead. Its time to concentrate on winning the hearts of gamers instead.
