Amazon FireTV Announced and Released [$99 box, $40 controller, game capable STB]

It's got a usb port so maybe external storage? If this can run XBMC i'll be getting one.
Yeah, it could be possible. My guess is if it does indeed support external HDD, it will have to be one that uses low power like the OUYA. I would think it be crazy to include a USB slot and no support for external storage.

Speedwagon

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
Looks solid; will definitely be picking this up down the line.

Market saturation for these kinds of devices is getting absurd, especially when consoles and PCs also have this functionality built in; but with many other features also.

Yes, add also the smart tvs. I have one that has streaming built in and some very simple games. But I imagine TVs adding similar power to handle this types of games.

I'm in. Overnight shipping for only $4 /w prime. I have to say its shameful they don't bundle the controller and its gpu is not very good...

But my Roku 2 XS randomly reboots after less than a years use and so they don't deserve my dollar no matter how good the roku 3 is. Roku only having 90 day warranties is fucking infuriating. $100 down the toilet for my XS.

I hope streaming from non kindle tablets to the fire tv becomes a thing.

not for me because i don't watch tv and i'm not sure in regards to amazon long term gaming approach, however, i can see people flocking to this

Well in the case of OUYA, you have flash drive support. Really going to be useless for gaming unless you got some option to expand it to 16 GB.

That's still pretty lame. I mean this would be a perfect device to take with you on trips because of the small form factor, kind of like Vita TV, but that's kind of negated if you have to also carry around an external usb HDD.

I will. Not totally sold on it, but the free return shipping within 30 days made trying it out an easy decision to make.

Thank you! Overall I'm liking the product. I just wish it has more hardware muscle (was hoping at least iPad air GPU). It does seem better than Roku and AppleTV. I can ditch my Roku but I can't ditch my AppleTV. I'm too deep into Apple's ecosystem and the airplay is something I can't pass up considering there are multiple iOS devices in my household.

Edit:
It's happened before.

Can you elaborate? Are you expecting the 80's type crash to happen?

Edit 2:
If I understand it correctly... the GPU in the FireTV is about what you can find in the latest Nexus 7.

You could just plug a flash drive and leave it in. Also, for Vita you need a memory card. I carry my OUYA around easy because I just leave my flash drive plugged in. They make small ones that hold up to 32 GB.
Here is an example:

Edit: No support off the bat? That is bad!

According to this user guide, the USB port is currently not supported. Hopefully an update will fix that.

Well, shit.

I wonder what formats it supports?

Any photos and personal videos you upload to Amazon Cloud Drive are automatically
available on your Amazon Fire TV when you register your Amazon account.
To add photos to your Cloud Drive account from a mobile device or desktop computer, you
can install the Cloud Drive app or you can add photos through your web browser. To learn
more, go to Photos from the Home screen of your Amazon Fire TV, and then select Add
Photos & Videos

Crap. There goes my attempt at using an Xbox 360 controller with it.

I'm not sure what to believe as several sites are reporting wired 360 controllers work off the bat.

I will definitely check when mine gets in.

Well that is the official Amazon User Guide for it. Technically it says there are no supported "accessories", I don't know what that means exactly. Maybe 360 controller support is coming in a later patch. They also mention on the store page for it that you can listen to your existing Amazon MP3 library, but then it says "coming soon". So maybe they're advertising features that it won't have at launch? Either way I hope they either have or get USB storage support, 8GB really isn't enough for anything.

I don't see a reason for this if Vita-TV comes out. Same price plus I don't have to buy another controller. Same TV apps. Much better games on Vita even if not all of them work because of lack of touch controls.

Where is Vita TV in the West???

Would of been cool if it got 360/ps3 ports, but with a 8gb storage i dont think its happening., and even if it was I dont think the CPU and GPU would be enough.

It does look quite a cool device though, a very small box that is portable has a massive movies and game library. It would of been nice if they stuck an nvidia K1 in it, though I expect this thing will get refreshes with more powerful hardware.

This is a "Kindle" device, so think about Amazon Prime as a service for it. VitaTV do not have that not it's aimed for amazon prime subscribers. Also Android has way bigger games library that Vita will ever have.

I would argue that Vita has far more quality titles available though.

Of course, I've never played a game on a Vita or on a Smartphone.

Will this be tracked by NPD?

Ouya is, and if this is we may have a wrench threw into our normal methods of calculations.

Wait, so this is what Double helix will be making games for?

At least they made it clear it's not a PS4/XBone competitor. Wasn't there a report that said it was supposed to compete with the Ps4?

I will wait for the second or third year revisions. My original Kindle Fire left a lot to be desired, but my HDX is pretty fantastic.

This isn't a game console and you can see it in Amazon's focus with the reveal. I see it as a Roku 3/Apple TV rival (I'm pretty confident the next Apple TV will also support a controller). The hardware is roughly 1/3rd as powerful as a 360 and only 1/20th as capable as a PS4. The Snapdragon 600 chipset with LPDDR2 RAM is mid range smartphone hardware. We're talking around 90-100 GF at most (likely to be lower). The games looked interesting but definitely more casual/mobile focused in nature.

As a streaming box it ticks all the boxes. It supports all the major services (HBO GO will come in time) and looks pretty nice. I also like the digital audio out. I think its ironic they managed Kinect's most compelling feature (voice control) with a $0.50 mic. This is a very serious competitor to the Apple TV and will do well.

This is what Microsoft should have done if they were serious about owning the living room with Xbox. Release a $99 st top box with mobile hardware, Kinect's voice commands and the Xbox One UI. Also release a "console" add on to this box which basically plugs in the Xbox One APU, memory and BR drive via a USB 3 port for $300. They would have had their cake and eaten it too.

iirc early rumors just said it'll use a new Snapdragon in and be close to the levels of PS3 and 360.

but remember one important thing... there is a huge change that Kindle FireTV will got yearly model upgrades (like other Kindle tablets, or other galaxy and apple phones and tablets) that will allow for better looking games.

Hopefully this turns out better than Ouya. Well now that I say that, anything's a success compared to the Ouya. Regardless, I'll sit this one out and see how everything turns out.

Plex support, perhaps DLNA, light duty gaming and most streaming services. If it doesn't support cinavia I might dive in. It could replace media duties finally that the ps3 pulls.

Or better yet, think of the FireTV as an Amazon Prime delivery vector, because that's what it is.

This thing is designed, built, and marketed with one goal: to sell Prime memberships. The gaming stuff is an afterthought.

I hope this box has some weight to it - if anyone has ever plugged things into an ouya you know why.

Well, maybe. It's more of an entertainment hub than an android gaming device because the controller is not sold with it but as an accessory.

So not sure if this has been said already, but anyone notice how similar the controller is to the Onlive controller? Even the screw patterns are the same. Maybe an Onlive app for this later on?

Amazon Controller pics (notice the screw holes): http://www.engadget.com/gallery/fire-tv-controller/

I took some pics of the Onlive controller:.

Yeah, I noticed it too when the FCC pics first showed up. Looks quite similar, except the Onlive controller looks a little more...premium.

I talked to customer service about this when it was announced. While there is a USB port, right now, it doesn't support external storage via either a thumb drive or a hard drive. The controller is also only set to work for the PlayTV. I went into more detail in an article on HG.

It makes sense that they would sell the controller separately as I think a large portion of their market won't necessarily have any interest in games. However, it's a cheap opt-in if there are kids in the house or for the curious. The price seems very competitive for what it can do as a game player, as well. Really not interested in it though. It doesn't come across as a game console, and I have plenty of devices that can do streaming already.
