inFamous: Second Son Characters Polygon Count revealed (120k Polygons)

From the full GDC postmortem slides posted here on the official site

No wonder they were impressive. Definitely some of the best looking characters in current gen game.

I remember reading in a German N-Zone magazine that Leo from Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube had 8(0)'000 polygons as the main character. Man, time goes by.

I would love to see that wireframe. Hopefully some of the work makes it to zbrushcentral or the likes. I expected polycounts to rise but not quite this high! They definitely made the most of it, the models are fantastic.

The PS2 version had 8000 ish polygons, but the Gamecube around 10000 polygons on Leon etc etc.

Higher than the order eh? Unexpected. NPCs in the Order seem to be a lot higher though.

Not surprised it is that high though. Most of the cutscenes are real time, and you can see how awesome the models are there. The game probably has the most awesome looking real time cutscenes I have seen.

Ryse = 85k Polygons with LODs
Ryse has 40k to 160k polys depending of what kind of character it is. Main characters do not have LOD at all.
They've also made tons of optimization in terms of polys to get most out of them. Thats why they reduced Marius poly count, they erased useless tris.

I wasn't aware of that actually, thanks for the correction.

I think the impressive thing here is that Second Son is an open world game. Ryse had impressive looking characters for sure, but it wasn't exactly open world. That's what it makes more interesting for me here, that they went with such higher polygon count.

My dreams will come true if poly count becomes the new battleground for whether or not a game is good.

Interesting that Beyond is at 30k. She looks pretty damn good at only 1/4 the polys.

What's LOD?

I'm incredibly ignorant when it comes to tech. Not that I don't mind learning though!

Level of detail. Distant objects use fewer polygons and probably textures, but I don't know if that's incorporated in LOD. Also jankier animations, but I might have made that up.

The order 1886 characters are "over 100k" and anyway Delsin is shit compared to the order 1886 main characters, cloths and details are in another world. Something is wrong...

Level Of Detail. Characters/environmetant details usually have many LODs, which will vary in number of poligons/triangles according to the distance they are viewed.

Number of poligons is just one of many details. There's also the shaders in use and the resolution of the textures, for example.

LOD = levels of detail. There are usually various versions of any particular model which are swapped out as they near/move away from the camera.

You've probbaly seen the effect as geometry that sorts of just pops into existance as you move closer to an object in a game.

Whatever happened to Tessellation allowing for the creaiton of an LOD free (or LOD lite) game engine?

In current engines making open world vs small world is mostly about level of detail and streaming. In open world You just need to be smarter with assets and their LoD and how get most out of close up scenes with limited amount of assets.

Also from screenshots i've seen normal citizens did not looked very high poly, so 120k figure is probably for more important enemies and main characters.

Source? It was 85k after all the optimization the last we heard. Where are you getting the 160K number/

This is a stupid question but is a limit possible?

Star Citizen's Cruiser ship weighs in at over 7 million polygons. But it's unlikely that you'd be rendering all of them at once in a single frame.

Basically the limit is whatever your hardware can push. There's probably a desired soft cap on any one frame and you build your level and models accordingly. I think modern hardware can do a lot of polygons withotu a sweat... it's when you start throwing in textures and per pixel effects that things start to bog down.

that's in cutscenes i assume.
Detail on Delsin certainly isn't the same ingame although he is still very detailed

yeah but the complexity of the cloths from the order characters put to shame delsin cloths. , and the order characters have everyone complex hairs too, something is really wrong here!

Apparently this is what the count are for various David Cage games:

playstation-4-reveal-conference-8.jpg

And yet the characters in Beyond looked better.

Not saying the facial animation isn't impressive at points in Infamous but the seams are very noticeable, both literally and metaphorically.

Low res skin textures didn't help nor did the weird shadowing under the jawline.

I'm playing through Beyond right now and am ASTOUNDED at how good it looks. Just incredible.

Beyond is an awful game though. It has severe framerate hitches and is not open world.

O_O - My face as soon as I read the thread title.
Just, damn... No wonder they look so good.
The current gen with several times the poly counts for character models from the previous gen... I am happy.

Every part of clothing that should move on Delsin did move, so not sure what you're talking about.

still is more impresive on a open world game no matter how you want to spin it..also more impresive is sucker punch is not crytek..they dont have the money or resources of crytek on ryse and still they managed to make the most impressive graphical game of the launch window,at 1080p with a open world

cant wait for ND to show what is the ps4 capable of

I didn't really think much of the Character's in infamous, beyond Delsin all of their faces were awful and when they raised their arms it looked like they had wingsuits on. Even the main villain was awful and looked like she had a facial from the same Spa that Captain Shepherd used.

Beyond's were fantastic even without as many polygons
