Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

Can someone with access to the PC game give us high def screenshots of the
four engravings in the inside of Shrine of Winter?

Those things seem to be really important for the lore, but they are so blurry in the console version that you can't see shit.

Please understand.
I have to disagree. They dont look too blurry to see in my opinion.

Not sure if it's been posted yet somewhere else. PC Gamer has a new video of the game.

The lighting (or shadowing?) looks pretty good during this portion, no? It was pretty dark once the character falls into the water

I thought that too. Also the
big meat boss thing
looked really nice.

It's definitely got improvements over DS1.

Can't wait for Durante's article.

Ugh, they did nothing for the ugly fog doors it seems. Just flat and bland with few actual fog effects. Demon's souls did it right with the translucent refraction effects.

Also, am I the only one who thinks the most deadly and dangerous enemies in the game are the salamanders?

Textures look really nice IMO. But the biggest factor is that 60 FPS. For a Souls game, that is HUGE. I'm super excited to play.

I just hope that the game can be modded and we can start a Nexus mod community for it to get like graphical mods in it.

Edit:

That framerate, so smooth.

Can't wait.

YouTube doesn't show 60FPS. You only get to see the texture improvements in that video if I'm correct. Go watch the Giant Bomb one which is in 60 FPS in their own video player.

Someone from Tumblr who I follow, who does videos on Dark Souls and such by extracting files from the discs said that Nxyo’s mod tool will have support for Dark Souls 2. I have no idea what Nxyo’s mod tool is.

Hellkite Drake?

Also, Nyxo's mod tool?

Also, I don't believe Dark Souls 2 on Steam will be using VAC. Although it uses Steamworks which is hella weird. Could be a good thing in the sense that you can mod it w/o getting in trouble (graphical mods, not gameplay-related that can break the game).

If there's no VAC or anything what's to stop cheaters?

You can find Nyxos twitter here.

The tool is simply a model viewer/map viewer.

It makes my heart bleed (get it) seeing those older trailer screen captures.

What the hell happened, this is plain false advertising. Reminds me of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

That's really cool. Would there be a way to extract your own character model?

Yeah, Nyxo said on the xentax forums that his goal is to make a mod tool capable of reading/writing the game's archives. Replacing models and such. That kind of thing.

I've been following his progress for a while now, he just released the viewer only version. He's taking his sweet time :) Other commitments, I guess.

On topic though: game looks far better than the console version, IMHO. Only 1 week 2 days and 11 hours!

Someone on reddit said that it's about 7 gigs on PSN after it's all done installing and stuff, and with the higher resolution textures and stuff it's going to be bigger than that on PC.

Maybe Wesley or Durante can spill the beans on that, I don't imagine that's too sensitive information or covered by any NDA.

Well, the console version is 6 or 7, certainly.
Sorry, that was an awful post where I didn't clarify what I meant. I assume it won't be 14 GB to download, but after uncompression the full game will take 14 GB, it's simply a guess.

So I would need 14Gb of free storage space on my SSD, correct? But it will be about a 6~7 GB download.
Exactly, but like I said, it's just what I think, not for sure.

I can't wait for the PC version! Got my copy preordered at nuuvem.

I'm interested to read Durante's article. I hope it gets edited and posted at Pcgamer sometime this week.

Same lighting. Now I am really glad I didn't bother waiting for PC version.

Why? Even without lighting the PC version is leaps and bounds ahead of the console version simply due to frame rate and resolution differences.

Going from 20 second loading screens to 2 seconds is a massive bonus too. Not to mention can be had for much cheaper than the console version.

What about the much better frame rate, higher resolution, decreased loading times, cheaper price etc?

People already playing the console version don't mind the loading times that much. The PC version is the same game and the improvements might not be enough to some, which is understandable.

I doubt any NG++ (and above) players will even bother with the PC uncapped port. Just a small few probably would.

Listening to the Giant Bombcast, they actively loathe the load times and genuinely change their play style specifically so they may avoid them.

(About "spilling the beans": I agreed not to post any results of my investigation of the PC version before the article is published - sorry!)

I dont understand, if it's your article, why you cannot speak about it before it get published?

It's an article I write, but it's a PC Gamer article. They gave me early access to the game enabling me to write it, and are paying me for it, and they set certain conditions. Which are perfectly reasonable, even though not being able to post screenshots is driving me insane :p

Yeah, I'm very happy I decided to wait. I'm getting a version that is substantially better in every way, and it only cost me $35.

The load times are terrible, what are you talking about?

unless we get mods or some durante stuff i fail to see any reason to get the PC version later instead of sticking with my current PS3 version

Have you played Dark Souls on PC without DSFix vs with DSFix?

Dark Souls II on PC is proving to be basically equivalent to "durante stuff".

DSFix has full resolution options, AA (SMAA and FXAA), SSAO, Depth of Field, frame rate unlock, HUD disable/scaling, borderless fullscreen, and AF (though it's recommended not to use it).

DSII by default has full resolution support, texture, shadow, and effects quality, AA (though it's only on/off), two different methods of motion blur toggle (DSI had one option), AF, SSAO, Depth of field, water quality, character model rendering. It's currently unknown whether the framerate is unlocked but it supports at least 60fps (DSI is a bit buggy at 60fps, and very buggy at 120fps). I'm also unsure if it has a borderless fullscreen mode.

Realistically, the frame rate and resolution bump to at least 1080p60 will be a pretty sizeable difference from the last gen consoles 720p30(but very variable)

Seems like a lot of people here don't appreciate how important 60 FPS is to PC gamers.

This is what we are getting, and I'm happy. You should be pumped!

60 FPS Dark Souls II is gunna be so gravy, silky...smooth...so smooth...so GOOD.

(DSI is a bit buggy at 60fps, and very buggy at 120fps).

I remember the reduced jumping distance and occasionally falling through geometry when fast sliding down ladders when running 60fps. Did DS1 have additional bugs when you were running 120fps? What were those?

Loading times alone are the biggest selling point of the PC version.

However, I doubt anyone playing the console version right now will even mind switching to PC once the port gets released: People actively playing on X360 or PS3 (who have already reached NG+) are either used to the angering loading times or just don't even find them bothering at all. I'm not one of those guys, which is why I sold my PS3 copy immediately in hopes of a better performing version (that we fortunately got).

Realistically I can only see a very selective few double dipping for this game.
