Nice to see 3DS dethroned even if for only a week. Sales all around seem awful though, Japan getting more and more into phone games :(

Is basically the same? Using the C-stick in Smash was never optimal for smash attacks, as you couldn't charge. I guess the circle pad isn't optimal either but this is way OT.

Question. Do people think that, given this year could be up YoY for Vita, that next year could be even stronger, or is this the peak?

Smash will revive the 3DS, but they better have something prepped for E3.

Smart Nintendo would have a preview of its successor, but real Nintendo will show nothing.

I feel they would need some kind of aggressive change since the software line-up is about as decent as they can manage and the price isn't bad.

Another $50 price cut with a stronger than expected line-up could improve from here given it's a pretty low bar, at which point they could pick up people who just want 2-3 somewhat notable titles on impulse buys.

The competitive landscape will also determine this since if people aren't buying anything new on their other platforms, they're more enticed to look into getting a new one.

I would be rather surprised if Nintendo can't pull out their own next handheld by the end of 2016, so I would see next year as the Vita's last real chance at improving.

Japan doesn't have the 2ds either right? That's still to come?

At any rate still think globally the 3ds needs a small drop on all SKUs. Slash each by $20-$30.

I'm hoping it'll slowly build as it has been doing and hope it'll have two good years in 2015 and 2016.

I say hope as I'm not ashamed to support it - I have a vested interest to keep the games coming and tbh I just feel bad that (memory cards aside) the console gets so many things so right it'd just be sad to see it flop over the long term.

can someone tell me why people think it's a good idea to release a 3DS successor so soon? I mean I get that hardware sales are down yoy from 2012 > 2013 > 2014 but isn't that relatively normal at a certain point? isn't this the time where Nintendo would milk software sales?

serious question, is this just people wanting a knee jerk reaction from Nintendo because they're Nintendo?

thanks. I'm genuinely curious

They already seem to be doing this in a soft manner with gift cards, rebates, and sales, which is why I think they haven't bit the bullet on a real price drop.

If they don't see enough uptick from those, it doesn't make sense to drop the price if they're going to make less money overall due to a relatively low increase in sales.

IRRC I think we might have some hints by Cream on that in the NPD threads? Maybe one or two months of splits??? I could be crazy though

The 2DS isn't out in Japan... Are you talking about worldwide? Well worldwide the 2DS made the original 3DS obsolete. Everyone's buying either the 2DS or the XL.

To those who are saying Nintendo needs to release a 3DS successor soon, you don't understand how console sales work. This is the time Nintendo can make money off 3DS software alone, and they're clearly doing fine on that front. The upcoming 3DS LL bundled with a game deal (starting 4/26) is meant to increase hardware sales in the meantime. At the very least, it makes buying a 3DS to play Yokai Watch and Animal Crossing more enticing for the next month, and whatever other games after that until September. If your kid really wants Yokai Watch but you think it's a bit too expensive to buy a 3DS for it, now you get Yokai Watch for free, thus effectively cutting the price. The Wii U's in a hole right now, so making money off of 3DS software is much safer than attempting to release a successor soon. I could see a new model of the 3DS coming for Japan this holiday. I think the 3DS XL bundle deal is going to end the minute the new 3DS revision comes out imo. How will those free game bundles be reflected in Media Create/Famitsu?

Also, the Wii U starts getting software until Mario Kart, and now is when the hardware sales start dropping like a rock? I know there's a tax increase, but weird...

What I mean is, they just had Just Dance Wii U last week, and have NES Remix 1&2 next week. Considering there was no software for 2 months after DKC, you'd think software sales would at least stabilize at the 7K or whatever low level it was at...

Also props to the Vita. The market is pretty dead, but at least the Vita has risen to the top (along w/ the dropping 3DS) of those low sales. I just wish everything else wasn't selling that badly.

So... exactly why is everyone losing their shit over the Vita being first? It's like people didn't know that SRW Z3 was more anticipated that OGs 2nd and Masou Kishin shit, and this isn't even the first time something like this has happened.

With that said, those are some good sales for Z3.

Go back through the last two and a half years of Media Create threads for a little context.

I'm not saying RELEASE it now. I'm saying show something about it. Get people talking.

Besides, 3DS is doing ok, but it is clear that it isn't meeting the needs of consumers right now.

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
Im curious to see if SAO: Hollow Fragment can keep the Vita up top next week also. Since the previous game sold pretty well back on the PSP. With all of the improvements plus addition of some characters not in the original title can see it doing well once again.

Though judging from things like pre-orders and whatnots. Fence sitters are out there waiting to hear day 1 impressions before deciding to rush out on friday to get theirs.

I remember when the whole vita champion thing was funny.......stinks of fanboy even if it is a joke.
It's a the point where I'm done reading the comments. I can pretty much predict most now. I don't even know why I read them today, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I can understand your point of view.

I am a Vita fan and I'm OK with that. To me, it's just fun. I don't think it would derail anything else sales-related you wanted to talk about though.

Before you act like a smart-ass about it, I think "this isn't the first time this has happened" indicates enough for context.
Equal and opposite reaction to your dumbassery.

It's never happened outside of 'large' titles or price drops before. Besides, this is about more than just this week. This week is the cherry on the 2014 cake. So far.

If those cats were sincere, they'd have bailed during the 'itprintsmoney / beast mode' eras.

Mainline Super Robot Wars isn't a 'large' title in Japan?

Okay Smoky, carry on.

I wonder if WiiU will be sub 5K next week.

Good news about Vita. I can't believe it's beating 3DS in JPN. It's like I've entered a alternate universe or something. Very weird.

oh ok gotcha. and I guess that was a more general question because I've seen a few posters claim that it would be wise to release the successor asap.

and a question about your second point, how exactly isn't the 3DS meeting the needs of consumers? because the hardware sales are down? I don't really think market saturation = not meeting the needs of consumers. judging by software sales I think those needs are being met, no?

Well, at least you've made a useful contribution, eh?

I suspect the cheerleading has always been there, you just didn't notice it as much. I know it was prevalent throughout the 'beast mode' days of the 3DS.

The Vita turnaround has made for a plucky underdog story. People always love those.

Preach!!! :D

OT: Outside of vita being the champion...dat wiiu numbers tho. Please someone tell me they have something that could improve things releasing before the Mario kart release? Right?

It's getting 2 retail titles before Mario Kart in reality. What you call that is your opinion.

4/25 - NES Remix 1 & 2
5/15 - Sonic All-Star Racing

Well, it certainly didn't have the weight of expectations that something like Soul Sacrifice did. Not to mention it's a multiplat also available on a machine with four times the install base.

You're either playing daft or you have no idea how rough things have been for the Vita in Japan.

And yet it seems that you read the threads when it was basically other way around. ''3DS in beast mode'' '' Nintendo pacman!'' '' Vita means life lol''. I Wonder why with Vita meme it's so hard to deal with. People are just having fun.

I have never seen anyone complaining that Media Create threads were mostly "Beast Mode", "Nintedomination", "Pac Man charts", "dat Luigi", "go Pokemon", "Vita is dead", "lol Vita", etc.

I have never seen any complaints that every week the Media Create thread become "What Nintendo should do next speculation thread".

Long Live The Champion!

Edit: LOL @ people upset by Vita crowning

I can't take these threads seriously anymore with the amount of "championing" that goes on. It's rather sad because I used to enjoy reading these threads for non-fanboy war sales talk, but now it's all hashtags and annoying hit-n-run posts.

Lol. Threads used to reach 1000+ posts celebrating the 3DS and make funeral for Vita on weekly basis. The MC threads has always been like this, you were just on the other side of it.

I think it has less to do with people wanting the 3DS to fail and more to do with people anting the Vita to succeed. Hardware numbers were very poor this week. I don't know what the next big release for the 3DS is, but I guess this level isn't bad considering everyone and their pet has one. The dwindling PS3 sales are natural. The PS4 needs a game or two that actually have Japanes players interested to pick up a PS4.

Oh they were bigger than that during last gen when the Wii PSP and DS were doing numbers. But its all a shell of its former self now because the entire market is crapping out.

Im surprised people can find the enthusiasm or the energy needed to be offended. Talk about missing the forest for the trees. Gaming in Japan is dying and people want to bicker over who is moving 20k a week? Sheez... Now that the PS4 is out and isn't doing big numbers, I don't know what to think about Japans dedicated gaming scene anymore.
