PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass 7.0 Million Units (April 6th), 20.5M Software (April 13)

DizNAMN. I seriously cannot comprehend how it's still pulling these numbers into April. I mean, I know the outline of why, but it just seems surreal considering other emergent trends in entertainment right now. I kinda figured once the hardcore got their fix, we'd see a stark drop for all systems.

simple really.

at the start of the ps3 it seemed like the Sony brand was finally over and maybe it was worth giving it another shot with a new console in the next decade that fixed the problems of PS3.

Even if the Xbox One outsells the PS4 in March, that's only in the US. Worldwide it isn't even a question that the PS4 outsells the Xbox One on a monthly basis.

watch_dogs will also be released. i know it's got a bad rep here, but people are genuinely excited for that title. kinda like ac? lol. it's hated and loved and it's popular. okay, there's more hate than love, but still it sells.

sept is destiny, which is being pushed for ps4 per activision's strategy. diablo 3, order 1886, the new assassin's creed unity, nba 2k15, etc. most are multiplats but we all know in the real world, people buy these games for one console and that console most people will be buying their multiplats on will be the console this holiday.

Don't forget Batman Arkham Knight as well. If Sony can lock up an exclusive showing of that game at their E3 conference they will have a major push in sales this holiday season no doubt.

If Sony released news of the 6 million sales on March 3rd and that was before Feb NPD numbers, why is it assumed that releasing the 7 million news before the March NPD is "preemptive"?

Yeah, I guess. Secretly I'm actually hoping for PS4 win tomorrow. Just for the meltdowns.

No way. I still believe the sales will be a lot more frontloaded because of the crazy long last previous gen.

Put it this way, it's sold 7 million with 'only' Knack, Killzone and Infamous as the exclusives, you add Final Fantasy XIV and XV, The Phantom Pain, The Order 1886 and Driveclub as well as having the best multi-platform games and it has the potential to sell Wii numbers even if it is all front-loaded.

And that's not even counting whatever crazy stuff they come up with for Morpheus.

Why is everybody assuming Sony lost NPD? This is their sixed update on the PS4 sales. They tell them, because they are good and know MS can't counter them.

If MS is around 4 mln, then it means Sony is outselling them worldwide 3:1 this calender year.

For those saying the PS4 is slowing down, scroll to the right for the Sales Per Day in each tracking period

I say it's selling a little under the baseline from Dec. 28th to Feb. 8th which was a period of less stock. The baseline still seems incredible

Never mind. I'm slow today

But that battle doesn't even matter.

Microsoft's main market is NA with the UK being the exception in Europe.

Just look at how long it's going to take MS to get to the T2 countries, they know that battle was over before it even began.

The real war is on the western front and if MS can keep market control.

It's selling terribly in Japan. Europe would have to be doing the major lifting, but I'm not sure whether the European market matches the US market.

so? Its still sold around 100k+ over the last 5 weeks in Japan hasn't it? I guess 400k would put at a very close estimate. Id changed my prediction that it could be a little more than 400k, but its gotta be less than 500k.

Because free Titanfall and lots of price cuts.

So 1m units in around 35 days? I'd say they're still selling them as fast as they can ship (except in Japan). And MS absolutely should win the NPD tomorrow. With the sale prices and bundles they had if they didn't win March you could almost put a fork in them (but they did win March, so..).

Amazing numbers though. PS4 should easily surpass 10m by years end. Most likely by a wide margin when you factor in Nov and Dec.

I know Sony won over a lot of gamers with their consumer friendly policies, but how much of their newfound success is tied to people just sick of xbox as a brand, regardless of whether or not Microsoft fucked up last year?

So if MS can be about even with Sony in America by slashing their price it doesn't matter if they are outsold 2:1 worldwide? How convenient for them.

As a few others have already speculated, I think this means they *think* they lost NPD's. Anything could happen though. Could be close. Really, this just means Sony knows they didn't completely blow away MS (by selling 450k+ or whatever). My guess is around ~320k units.

Why announce prior to a loss when the message will be immediately drowned out by the competition's victory? Nobody will be talking about 7 million sold for very long if NPD isn't in their favour tomorrow. Seems like an absolute waste to announce it right before it then.

If they lost, it would have been much smarter to announce this number Friday.

From IGN:

Sony revealed that over 20.5 million games have been sold, both at digital and at retail, to consumers as of April 13, 2014. That represents a significant uptick in games sold, bringing PlayStation 4’s attach rate to 2.93 games per console (in January, the attach rate hovered around 2.3).

PS4 continues to have no games...

They waited 10 days to announce this. They sold 7 million on April 6th and waited until April 16th, the day before NPD reports go public, to announce that. It's a perfectly logical conclusion that they're doing this because MS won the March NPD and Sony is attempting to steal MS's thunder.

Sure XBO can have sold way more in march then the PS4. But that isn't the reason why they announced these numbers. Sony have been updating us monthly since the release of the PS4.

Imo this is more a message towards developers. "Look don't be afraid, develope for us"!

If XB1 wins this NPD is it a big deal? If Sony are still in front overall what does it matter?

MS has much more to lose if Sony nabbed March than it has to win if Sony lost March.

It means that even with Titanfall and that huge marketing push they still couldn't overcome the PS4, which only had Second Son.

How do we know Sony didn't win last month's NPD? They could be releasing these numbers so they could get two punches thrown at Microsoft.
