I might need to watch this Japanese animated television show.

Polygon should be smart enough to realise the term 'sold in' is utter nonsense. The phrase they were looking for was 'shipped to retailers'

Sold-in is a commonly used term which means the same thing as shipped, is often reported by publishers, and has nothing to do with Microsoft's position right now. You don't get to declare terms "utter nonsense".

What are you talking about? The talk about PS3+PS4 numbers being combined has to do with how that gets reported on their quarterlies. MS actual does the exact same thing.

Sony is very specifically saying they've sold 7 million PS4s. People in the know have already confirmed that the PS4 sold 371k for the month.

Sony doesn't sort out their numbers in their quarterly reports. Also the link you provided clearly shows MS saying they sold 3.9 Million Xbox One and 3.5 Million 360 consoles. Sony's quarterlies show only a combined figure.

Yeah, it's clearly Polygon's fault here because obviously judging from this thread, GAF sure as hell doesn't know what it means.

also keep mind the crazy bundles some retailers were offering in order the sell the xbox one and still ps4 came out ahead, MS needs an emergency plan asap

If I was MS I'd almost be tempted to just ride this out and have a short gen, launching Xbox two in four years. I can't see any amount of price cutting helping now (well other than crazy amounts of money that I can't see MS accepting).

Price cut too far and you get tagged as a machine to avoid, looking desperate

mmmm, yeah, but even with that I'd kind of hope that there's some growth with new consoles out and stuff, especially since the last few years have been a major decline over industry trends. Out of curiosity do we have numbers for March 2007.

Yes:

Top 10 Software Items YTD (Q1) 2007, ranked by units

Gameboy Advance - 143,000
PS3 - 130,000
Gamecube - 22,000

GAF has a short-term memory. I guess we should've given up on the 360 and PS3 after the Wii gained an enormous lead. Competition doesn't exist on GAF, apparently.

We're too busy making stupid Microsoft jokes and banning their people from posting on here to pay attention to that system.

Come on man

I eagerly await the - hopeful - days where we see consecutive positive software sales growth yoy.
You're probably never going to see that again with NPD. More and more people are going digital, and NPD doesn't cover digital sales. Software sales are probably up this month, but we just don't have the numbers to show it.

Ok so March 2007 was

Nintendo DS - 509,000
PS2 - 280,000
Wii - 259,000
Xbox 360 - 199,000
PSP - 180,000
Gameboy Advance - 143,000
PS3 - 130,000
Gamecube - 22,000

From this I guess it can be inferred that at the same period
Last Gen Consoles are down from where they were in 2007
Next Gen Consoles are up from where they were if you discount the Wii.

Handhelds? Crazy down. (True we have no numbers for this 2014 march yet, but there's no way.)

So you followed them? lol

Polygon is correct.

Sold-in means shipped to retailers (sold into the retail channel).

Sold-through means sold to consumers (sold through to consumers).

A gaming journalist site, I guess their supposed to be fair and balanced, makes that tweet based on the information that has been received today? Sound typical based on what I've seen of them to lead with that.

I blocked them in my hosts file and router. I know for a fact that I blocked that one writer on Twitter, but I'm not logged in to Twitter atm to see if I blocked their handle too.

When was the last time they used the term sold-in? I don't recall, it seems carefully worded as per usual.

haha now Ben Kuchera is downplaying the accuracy of NPD numbers like crazy! hahahahah

dat editor at Polygon

"Trying to get any meaning out of the NPD numbers available to the press outside of a really basic console sales comparison is impossible."

i.e. he's saying that NPD software sales are meaningless since NPD doesn't track digital sales or freemium games. He's not really downplaying system sales here.

Personally I laughed at the completely different interpretations of the same news posted almost at the same time by different people.

Edit: Not really different interpretation. More like different ways of expressing the same thing.

That's why I noticed it. PS4 trounces the XB1 by 2 million and they choose to lead with that headline? Really?

Here is a random, inaccurate example (doesn't reflect the NPD reality):

Combined SKU Top 3:

1. Titanfall (XBO, PC)
2. Infamous: Second Son (PS4)
3. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC)

Individual SKU Top 3:

1. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360)
2. Titanfall (XBO)
3. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4)

See the difference?

Thanks allot. Makes absolutely sense.

Stock Keeping Unit. Basically each version of a product (e.g PS4, Bone), will have a different barcode. You can combine the same game's SKUs into one total, hence why games with only one SKU can miss out.

Thanks as well.

Impossible to have growth as handheld market has died completely. PS2 was also younger during 2007 than X360 and PS3 are today.

Same here. I had no idea. Now, 7 million for PS4 isn't sold-in, correct?

Correct, it wouldn't surprise me if the PS4 sold-in was closer to 8M (with the consoles being in transit on freighters). Depends on how they count sold in, is it when they leave the factory or arrive at the retailer?

Of course they did. I'm just citing the obvious hypocrisy of the team players. It's definitely a fun thing to watch.

Now I wish someone would address the point about combined sales figures. That's very interesting and I'd love to get some honest opinions. Why would a company need to combine sales figures with their previous hardware? You don't see this with the Wii / Wii U or the 360 and the Xbox One. That stuff is always sorted out in their company reports.

And does anyone think we'll get a solid PS4 number? Because if it's much higher, say in the 400k range, this thread will go atomic.

What are you even talking about at this point. Are you insinuating that Sony is lying about 7 million PS4's sold.
