This show is such a treat to watch. Loved the bread making bit when
Tippy freaked out at the though of himself being baked in the oven. :lol
So cute.

This is actually the very first anime I've watched that I started the manga to first, so I was looking forward to this one the most this season.

Black Bullet 1

Not a bad first episode. They ended up cutting out some stuff though. A bit of a shame too, as I felt it was a pretty tragic scene. I think it would've help set the tone of the show a bit better than it did. Instead of focusing so much on the relationship between Rentaro and Enju.

No Game No Life 02

Getting better. Loved all the head banging and there was pretty silly reactions going on in this episode. Good amount of humor is really making this enjoyable.

You know what Animegaf I may start to watch Madoka Magica today or tomorrow and give my impressions on it because from what I heard it ain't no typical magical girl anime. And I hope it's true.

I don't have the energy to write up something long when people have already done a good job of it, but damn that was a great episode.

Its a really interesting show for the genre. Mahou shoujo has been dark before but never approached like this.

No, but people have been typing "TheOnik" and "Oink" and he's been kind of upset.

I did not know. I didn't mean any disrespect or meant to be insulting. That's just how I have been reading his name this whole time. Had I known I would've taken more care when I type his name.

Madoka Movie 1

This is at least the third time I've seen this material, and I'll admit some parts are starting to wear a little thin, but it still managed to bring actual tears to my eyes. Goddammit I love this franchise.

Just hoping that love continues when I get to the third movie =p

Soul Eater Not! 01

Not as bad as I had been lead to believe, but... also not as good as Soul Eater... so... I dunno.

The english-speaking captain was pretty lols tho. About accurate to the two times I flew on Japan Air.

The artstyle is atrocious though! It doesn't have that stylish feel of Soul Eater at all :<

lol those two are already shadowing the princess. Nice.

It's nice to get a little more grounded feel about the Soul Eater universe though. I'm appreciating the added setup time before main girl gets to the top. (But she doesn't say "I'm in love with love" and that totally sucks... oh wait, there we go)

Wow Maka's japanese voice is totally different to how I envisioned it :< Black Star is accurate tho. Oh christ this new artstyle :<

Wait, they cut the little scene in the classroom where Maka gets distracted by Tsugumi... I guess cos she didn't change her hair yet.

Oh man, she double slapped both of them. Lols.

Man. Bones can really do action sequences if they try. Jeeze.

Tears huh? So I am guessing that the movies are a little more emotionally charged then the actual show?

Madoka is already pretty emotionally charged. It's not necessarily trying to make you drown in tears, but there are plenty of moments of high emotion in the series already.

Being more 'emotionally charged' would probably just mean being extremely melodramatic and maudlin for no reason. Better to earn your emotional moments like Madoka does.

Saikano is quite melodramatic to an almost ridiculous degree but holy shit its depressing sometimes.

I can deal with melodramatic as long as it doesn't cross into ridiculous territory. Anohana almost did a few times and honestly without it could've made the emotional parts of the show better.

I didn't feel Madoka had emotional moments though. It had nothing to do with melodrama and more to do with me not getting enough time to get attached to the characters to get me to feel anything. If anything Madoka went for more the shock and awe factor then getting you invested in anyone except Madoka and Homura. The only time I was really sad-ish was when they did Homura's backstory in episode 10. That's the only "emotional" scene that really felt earned.

Man, you guys never stop posting, huh.

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san ep.2

Dogs, cats, mice, and cows, oh my.

Gochiusa ep.2

This is turning out to be a surprisingly well-produced show. The characters all do a great job playing off one another and it's got pretty good comedic timing. We've really been on a roll as far as cute-girls-doing-cute-things shows go over the last year or so.

Ping Pong ep.2

That was a lot better than the first episode for me. Art style didn't seem as weird this time around for some reason. If the rest of the show is like this it'll be really good.
Also, they're doing a fantastic job with the music in this show.

Nanana's Buried Treasure ep.2
Well, I had the fact that the maid was a guy spoiled for me before I watched the episode, but at least they reveal it almost immediately after he shows up so it wasn't that bad.
Anyway, it was a rather average episode for the most part, but that final sequence in the room was neat. Looking forward to more like that in the future.

--------------------------------------------------

Okay, now time to run back through the thread and find stuff to respond to~

Ping Pong 1:
The visuals for this show are just amazing. I absolutely love the art style they've come up with, and the animation is obviously top notch. There were so many moments in the episode that were just expertly handled. Aside from just the animation, the direction in general is superb, with the use of panels in a variety of shots to show action happening on a small scale, and the way the timing of every little move is handled in detail, this is really a show with a high level of craft on display. The main characters are also pretty interesting the way they're set up, particularly because they don't really fall into typical lead character type roles. Peco is kind of obnoxious, but the show also seems fully aware of that. I was really impressed with pretty much every aspect of the first episode, and I'm looking forward to watching the whole season. It's always really nice to see a unique show with a very specific vision, and that's what Ping Pong is promising.

I didn't feel Madoka had emotional moments though. It had nothing to do with melodrama and more to do with me not getting enough time to get attached to the characters to get me to feel anything. You can get attached to a character in under a minute if the writers do their jobs right. The idea that you need a 50 episode series or a multi-volume series in order to have enough time to get attached is kind of silly.

Kyouko's backstory was for me, highly emotional, and it was played perfectly because it wasn't just a sad moment, but it also explained everything about the character and why she acted the way that she did. Sayaka's tragic fall from a bright eyed optimist to having nothing to live for and having to confront the reality of having sold her soul was also a really harsh moment. For me, the reveal about the soul gems is far less about it being a 'shocking reveal', and more about how it effects Kyouko and Sayaka (and Madoka to a lesser extent). That's what Madoka has going for it. It's not about shocking moments and the brutality of them; it's about how the characters respond to those moments.

And there were other really emotional moments, too. Madoka and her mom's conversation at the table about how to help a friend and what growing up means was pitch perfect, and the scene with Madoka's brother playing at the end of the show is also a very emotional moment. It's bittersweet, because her family doesn't remember her, but there's also the idea of the slightest memory of her living on just beneath the surface. I think you can form more of an emotional attachment to Madoka's mom in about 15 minutes of total screen time than you can to many other characters across long series.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou 3

Poor Mayumi.

Sayaka is such a nasty piece of work.

Ritsu has so many crazy adorable moments, it's great.

Someone should try watching this episode right after the cultural festival arc of Hyouka to see if it causes some kind of mental whiplash.

Madoka Magica 1

So from the beginning it created an intense scene with black and white colors which definitely hinted that this isn't going to be no hello kitty and the music in the beginning was really great. Those eyes from the transfer student did show a whole lot of I don't give a shit look which is really impressive from a middle schooler.
THEN the later part of the episode showed smuggy cotton balls with mustaches and the environment screwing with your head, I got to say this anime is definitely unique and I like that. I do hope that their will be some twists.

Well the premise of the show is a guy's cute little GF is turned into a killing machine by the army for use in a world war. I think that shows you the potential lengths the show can (and does) go.

I really love the character Kyoko. My favorite by far. Her backstory definitely sucked me in to feeling sympathetic for her and later on some of the things she did endeared her to me. Also she has the best weapon and a fang.

Madoka's a fine series, and I enjoy it quite a bit, but a lot of its strengths are how, with a few small tweaks, it could be a regular magical girl show. Because regular magical girl shows, be they aimed at the late night crowd, the Sunday morning crowd, or are spinoffs from something else, are all pretty great. Not for everyone's tastes, but it's not about the colors or the despair or anything else.

If you're going to appreciate something that twists a genre, it should also be appreciated for what it does that you'd expect that genre to do. After all, that's where the heart of it lies.

Aw man, another one is going to fall victim.

Man, am I in a minority with people who hate this movie? Like, I can understand why others like the third movie in terms of its storytelling, but it is NOT something I recommend to those who love everything about the franchise. It feels like a needless slap in the face to fans honestly.

You know how much I dislike Rebellion? I appreciate it as much as Corvo appreciates E7AO. Yeah. That much.

I'm not gonna hold it against you if you like it though.

everyone here is named after a car. It's hilarious.
...I can't believe I didn't notice that. Trabant, Acura, Gaz...
The way I look at it is thus - if you keep up with the latest anime as it airs you'll probably find one great show per season. If you go back and watch a selection of choice anime you can watch 30 great shows back to back.
(Well, personally I'm finding more than one show I really enjoy per season, though that aside...)

Admittedly, that's true, but part of it for me is just a matter of access and available time to put in the effort for it. Like, if someone handed me a DVD of Millenium Actress and told me to give it a watch over the weekend or some anime club was screening it, I'd probably be able to do that no problem. But on my own initiative I can't be bothered since I feel like I've got enough on my plate already.
Again, not a slight against your or your list, that's just how it is for me.
Leaving that aside - what is it you want to discuss about anime? This will sound harsh but you clearly need to find an outlet for your fandom other than posting news (although hopefully having a job will help with not making that quite such an urgent issue for you!) - so what do you want to talk about? People are always willing to discuss things, that's the point of the thread!
I sort of noted the same thing in one of my other posts just above the one you quoted for this, but anyway I just want to be able discuss something and help drive conversation, to respond and be responded to. Relaying news was just the simplest form of that but I'm trying to branch out more now.

Today I visited some more Steins;Gate places (Yeah... I'm in Akihabara, so how hard can it be to find those, right? :p):

This is pretty fantastic.

Ping Pong - 2

Continuing to be the highlight of the season for me. As much as I love Mushi-shi's overall tone Ping Pong just exudes a freshness (probably aided by the overall color choice) that I can't ignore.

Atelier is fun, but it really does feel like RPG quests adapted to 20 minute stories. It reminds me a bit of Tanken Driland, actually. Genki girls make anything work. lol

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 7
Thoughts during episode:

- How many times are you gonna use the word Melancholy, Kyon?
- Kyon is jealous. Bout time.
- Haruhi is awesome.
- At this point I am starting to agree with gigguk's review on this show.
- Hahahaha. Well you can't deny it's a funny show.
- Haruhi's smirks and grins are the best. I just love it when anime characters do that I don't know why.
- This obsession with Canada is funny.
- LMAO.
- Poor Mikuru. She's an angel. But I love it when Haruhi messes with her.
- Okay this is not Haruhi's strong point. It is dumping a lot of information. Clearly the best part of this show is Haruhi's antics not..... this.
- This CG Cricket is bad.

Summary:

So I really agree with gigguk's review to an extent. The show itself and the story aren't really it's strong qualities. Haruhi's antics hold it all together. Without it, it would just be a huge convoluted mess of a story with a boring MC. Haruhi and her antics are the only thing driving me to keep going.

I know there are a lot of Haruhi supporters on here and I can get why. It's a funny show, but Kyon is unbearable and the actual story leaves much to be desired. Hopefully The Disappearance is worth all this.
